CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND AMELIA’S DOOR

CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND AMELIA’S DOOR
Victor Hale had spent seven years avoiding that room.
Not because he was afraid of the darkness inside.
Not because he feared old memories.
But because Amelia’s final words still haunted him.

“Promise me you won’t open that door until the truth is ready.”
At the time, Victor thought grief had made his wife say something impossible.
He thought she was frightened because of the illness that had taken away her strength.
He thought the locked room was just another painful reminder of a woman he could never bring back.
But now, standing inside Amelia’s hidden room, Victor realized one terrifying possibility.
Maybe Amelia had known something.
Something she never got the chance to reveal.
The room looked untouched.
A thin layer of dust covered the furniture.
The curtains were closed.
The air smelled like old paper and forgotten memories.
But everything was arranged perfectly.
Almost like someone had been waiting for Victor to find it.
Lily stood near the doorway, holding Ethan close.
She looked around in disbelief.
“I thought this room was empty.”
Victor slowly turned toward her.
“Who told you that?”
Lily hesitated.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Serena.”
Victor’s expression changed.
Again, Serena’s name felt like a warning.
For years, Serena had been the person who helped him manage the mansion after Amelia’s death.
She handled schedules.
She organized family affairs.
She even helped care for Ethan when Victor was buried in his company.
Victor had trusted her.
More than he should have.
He looked around the room again.
A framed photograph on the desk caught his attention.
It was a picture of Amelia holding baby Ethan.
Victor picked it up carefully.
His fingers trembled.
Behind the frame, something was hidden.
A small envelope.
His name was written on it.
Victor.
Nothing else.
Lily watched as he opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Victor read the first sentence.
Then his face went completely pale.
“What does it say?” Lily asked.
Victor did not answer.
He kept reading.
The letter was written in Amelia’s handwriting.
The handwriting he knew better than anyone.
“My love,
If you are reading this, then something happened that forced you to finally search for the truth.
I need you to know something.
The accident that happened to me was not an accident.”
Victor stopped breathing for a second.
The room felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
Lily covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.”
Victor continued reading.
“Someone inside this family has been hiding information from you.
Someone you trust is not who they appear to be.
Protect Ethan.
Do not let anyone control his inheritance.
The Hale legacy was never the only thing they wanted.
They wanted power.”
The paper shook in Victor’s hand.
For seven years, he blamed himself.
He believed he failed Amelia.
He believed he failed his son.
But now he realized something much worse.
Someone had been lying to him.
Someone had been living inside his home.
Someone had been watching Ethan grow up while hiding a dangerous secret.
A loud noise suddenly came from the hallway.
Victor immediately turned.
Lily stepped closer to Ethan.
“What was that?”
Victor walked toward the door.
The hallway was empty.
But something was lying on the floor outside.
A black leather folder.
Victor picked it up.
There was no name on it.
Only one word.
Inheritance.
His jaw tightened.
He opened it.
Inside were financial records.
Trust documents.
And signatures.
One signature appeared again and again.
Serena Vale.
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“She knew.”
Lily looked at the documents.
“Knew what?”
Victor looked at Ethan.
“She knew about the trust.”
Ethan looked confused.
“Daddy, what is a trust?”
Victor immediately softened.
He kneeled beside his son.
“It’s something adults use to protect important things.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Is someone trying to take my mommy’s things?”
Victor froze.
Because that was exactly what was happening.
Someone was trying to steal what Amelia left behind.
Someone wanted Ethan removed before he became old enough to control his own future.
Suddenly, the lights flickered.
A shadow moved across the hallway.
Victor stood up instantly.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“You should have left that room locked.”
Victor’s eyes widened.
It was Serena.
But she was not alone.
A man stepped beside her.
Someone Victor recognized immediately.
His own family attorney.
Daniel Cross.
The man who had handled Amelia’s estate.
The man who prepared Ethan’s trust.
The man Victor trusted with everything.
Victor’s face hardened.
“Daniel.”
The lawyer gave a nervous smile.
“Victor, listen to me.”
“No.”
Victor stepped forward.
“You listen to me.”
“You helped Serena hide this.”
Daniel looked away.
That tiny movement confirmed everything.
Victor’s anger grew.
“Seven years.”
“Seven years you let me believe my wife died by accident.”
Serena crossed her arms.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“No.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You tried to erase my son’s future.”
Serena’s expression became colder.
“You really think this is about money?”
Victor stared at her.
“Isn’t it?”
Serena slowly smiled.
“No, Victor.”
“This is bigger than money.”
The room went silent.
Then Serena looked toward Amelia’s old desk.
“There is something in this mansion you still haven’t found.”
Victor frowned.
“What?”
Serena smiled.
“The reason Amelia was killed.”
Lily gasped.
Victor felt his entire body freeze.
Killed.
Not an accident.
Not a tragedy.
A murder.
Serena turned around.
Before leaving, she whispered one final warning.
“Be careful, Victor.”
“Because the person who betrayed Amelia is much closer than you think.”
The door closed.
Victor stood there in silence.
Then he looked at Lily.
Then Ethan.
And finally at the hidden room around them.
For the first time in seven years…
Victor Hale knew one thing for certain.

The enemy had never been outside the mansion.
The enemy had always been inside.
