CHAPTER 8 — The Person Who Never Left

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The attic felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
Daniel stared at Melissa, waiting for her to take back her words.
Waiting for her to say she had made a mistake.
But she didn’t.
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“The person who caused the crash is alive?” Daniel asked.
Melissa slowly nodded.
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“Who?”
She looked toward Michael.
“I don’t know his name.”
Victor immediately stepped forward.
“You’re lying.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Melissa looked at Victor with anger.
“No.”
Victor’s face tightened.
“You knew more than you told me.”
Daniel noticed the exchange.
And something became clear.
Victor wasn’t in control anymore.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
“You two know each other,” Daniel said.
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked around the attic.
“Everyone here knows something.”
He pointed at Victor.
“You.”
Then Michael.
“You.”
Then Melissa.
“And you.”
His voice broke.
“But somehow, I’m the only person who doesn’t know what happened to my own family.”
Lily’s voice suddenly came from the stairs.
“Daddy…”
Everyone turned.
Daniel immediately walked toward her.
“Lily, I told you to stay downstairs.”
The little girl looked scared.
“I heard voices.”
Melissa quickly moved toward her.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”
But Lily stepped back.
“No.”
Her eyes moved toward Victor.
“I know him.”
The room became silent.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?”
Lily pointed at Victor.
“He was here before.”
Victor’s expression changed.
“Impossible.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“Lily, what do you mean?”
She swallowed.
“He came into the house when Mommy was gone.”
Melissa covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?”
Melissa shook her head quickly.
“No.”
Lily continued.
“He didn’t see me because I was hiding.”
Daniel knelt.
“Where?”
“Behind the stairs.”
“When?”
The little girl looked down.
“Three months ago.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Three months.
That meant Victor had been inside their home long before tonight.
Watching.
Planning.
Waiting.
Daniel stood up slowly.
“You were already here.”
Victor remained quiet.
That was an answer by itself.
Michael stepped closer.
“You’ve been searching for the evidence.”
Victor looked at him.
“And you’ve been hiding it.”
Daniel looked between them.
“Where is it?”
Nobody answered.
His patience was gone.
“Where is the evidence?”
Michael looked at the boxes.
“I thought it was here.”
Daniel frowned.
“You thought?”
Michael nodded.
“Your father moved it.”
Melissa suddenly spoke.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
She looked at the floor.
“He didn’t move it.”
Michael stared.
“Melissa…”
She closed her eyes.
“He gave it to someone.”
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Who?”
Melissa looked at him.
“Me.”
The words landed like a shock.
Daniel stepped back.
“You had it?”
“I didn’t know what it was.”
“But you had it.”
She nodded.
“Your father gave me something before he died.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Why?”
“Because he trusted me.”
“Why would my father trust my wife?”
Melissa looked down.
“Because he knew I loved you.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
She wiped her tears.
“He knew you would never believe the truth if it came from anyone else.”
Michael looked surprised.
“Your father knew Melissa?”
She nodded.
“He met me before Daniel and I got married.”
Daniel stared.
“You never told me that.”
“I promised him I wouldn’t.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
“Another promise.”
Melissa looked heartbroken.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No. You were protecting secrets.”
He turned away.
“What did he give you?”
Melissa hesitated.
Then she reached into her pocket.
Everyone watched.
She pulled out a small black flash drive.
Victor immediately moved forward.
Michael noticed.
“Don’t.”
Victor stopped.
Daniel looked at the object.
“That’s it?”
Melissa nodded.
“Everything your father collected.”
Daniel stared.
Twenty-five years of lies.
Twenty-five years of hiding.
All contained in something smaller than his hand.
Then Victor spoke.
“Give it to me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what’s on that drive.”
Daniel held his ground.
“Then I guess it’s time I find out.”
Victor took a step forward.
Michael moved between them.
“Not another step.”
For the first time, Victor looked angry.
“You think you can stop me?”
Michael answered quietly:
“No.”
He looked at Daniel.
“But he can.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked confused.
“Me?”
Michael nodded.
“Because your father didn’t hide this for me.”
He looked at the flash drive.
“He hid it for you.”
Daniel looked at the drive.
Then at Melissa.
Then at Michael.
And slowly, he realized something.
His father’s final message was never about exposing the past.
It was about preparing Daniel for what was coming.
Because if Victor was willing to break into their home…
If he was willing to wait twenty-five years…
Then the truth on that drive was more dangerous than anyone imagined.
Daniel reached for it.
But before he could touch it…
The lights suddenly went out.
The attic fell into darkness.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Then Lily screamed.
“Daddy!”
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
He rushed toward the stairs.
Because someone had just entered the house.
And this time…
They weren’t hiding.
May you like
They came for the evidence.
And they came for his family.
