CHAPTER 7 — The Letter From the Past

Daniel stared at the letter in his hands.
The paper was old.
The edges were yellow.
The ink had faded slightly over time.
But there was no doubt.
He knew that handwriting.
It belonged to his father.
A man Daniel had spent years remembering as a strict but hardworking businessman.
A man he believed had made mistakes, but had always loved his family.
Yet now, every memory felt uncertain.
Every story he had been told seemed incomplete.
His fingers tightened around the letter.
“What does this mean?”
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at Michael.
“You knew about this?”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why did you react like that?”
Michael looked at the letter.
“Because I know your father.”
Daniel frowned.
“You grew up with him too.”
Michael looked away.
“That’s not what I mean.”
The silence bothered Daniel.
“Then explain.”
Michael took a slow breath.
“Your father was not only hiding things from the world.”
He looked at Daniel.
“He was hiding things from us.”
Daniel looked down at the letter again.
He continued reading.
The message was short.
But every word felt heavy.
“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from the truth.”
“I spent years trying to fix my mistakes, but some mistakes become bigger than the people who created them.”
“Do not trust anyone who tells you they know the whole story.”
Daniel stopped.
His eyes moved to the next line.
Then his expression changed.
Because the next words were addressed directly to him.
“Especially not your brother.”
The room became silent.
Daniel slowly lowered the letter.
Everyone looked at Michael.
Michael’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Daniel stared.
“My father warned me about you.”
Michael shook his head.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“Why would he write that?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
Michael looked hurt.
“I spent twenty-five years trying to protect you.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Or maybe you spent twenty-five years hiding what you did.”
Michael didn’t respond.
And that silence hurt more than any answer.
Victor watched quietly.
A small smile appeared on his face.
“You see?”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Victor stepped closer.
“Your brother always leaves out the parts that make him look bad.”
Michael immediately turned.
“Don’t.”
Victor ignored him.
“Ask him why he ran that night.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
“What is he talking about?”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“Victor is trying to manipulate you.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Michael looked at Daniel.
For a moment, he looked like the older brother Daniel remembered.
The brother who used to protect him.
The brother who taught him how to ride a bike.
The brother who promised he would always be there.
Then Michael whispered:
“I made a mistake.”
Daniel’s heart sank.
“What mistake?”
Michael looked down.
“The night of the accident, I took the evidence because I thought I could expose everyone involved.”
Daniel waited.
“But someone followed me.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
Michael shook his head.
“The car crashed before I could find out.”
Daniel stared at him.
“So what aren’t you telling me?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“I wasn’t alone because I asked someone to come with me.”
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Who?”
Michael hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Your mother.”
The words shocked everyone.
Daniel stepped back.
“My mother?”
Michael nodded.
“She knew what our father was doing.”
Victor looked surprised.
Even he didn’t seem to know that.
Daniel’s mind raced.
His mother had always been gentle.
Quiet.
The person who held the family together after Michael disappeared.
“You’re saying Mom knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Michael looked at the letter.
“Because she was afraid.”
“Of what?”
Michael looked toward Victor.
“Of the same people who are still looking for that evidence.”
Daniel looked around the attic.
Suddenly everything felt different.
The hidden room.
The camera.
Michael’s disappearance.
Melissa’s lies.
His father’s letter.
None of it was random.
Someone had spent years controlling the truth.
Then Daniel noticed something.
The letter had another page.
It was folded behind the first one.
He opened it.
His eyes widened.
Because the second page wasn’t written by his father.
It was written by someone else.
Someone who had been inside their house.
Someone who knew about Michael.
Someone who had been watching them.
At the bottom of the page was a signature.
Daniel whispered the name.
“Melissa…”
Everyone froze.
Melissa’s face turned white.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“You wrote this?”
She started crying.
“I can explain.”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“I’m done hearing that.”
He held up the page.
“You knew everything.”
Melissa shook her head.
“Not everything.”
“Then what did you know?”
She looked at Michael.
Then at Victor.
Then finally at Daniel.
Her voice trembled.
“I knew your brother wasn’t the only survivor.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Melissa wiped her tears.
“The night of the accident…”
She took a deep breath.
“There was someone else who escaped.”
The attic became silent.
“Who?”
Melissa looked terrified.
And then she said the words that changed everything.
“The person who caused the crash.”
Daniel felt a chill run through him.
Because after twenty-five years…
May you like
The person responsible was still alive.
And they had been closer than anyone imagined.
