CHAPTER 3 — The Shadow in the Hallway

The silence after Lily’s confession felt heavier than anything Daniel had ever experienced.

A child’s fear was different from an adult’s fear.

Adults could lie.

Adults could hide things.

Adults could pretend everything was fine.

But children usually couldn’t hide terror in their eyes.

And right now, Lily looked terrified.

Daniel slowly knelt down in front of his daughter.

“Lily, look at me.”

The little girl hesitated before meeting his eyes.

“Are you sure about what you heard?”

She nodded.

“Yes, Daddy.”

“When?”

“After Mommy leaves.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“After your mother leaves town?”

Lily nodded again.

Melissa suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, she’s confused.”

But Lily immediately shook her head.

“No, I’m not.”

Her voice cracked.

“I know what I heard.”

Daniel looked at his wife.

For months, he had convinced himself that his daughter was just scared.

A child’s imagination.

A nightmare.

A misunderstanding.

But now every strange moment from the past started coming back.

The missing food from the kitchen.

The doors he found unlocked.

The lights that were turned on when nobody admitted touching them.

The strange sounds at night.

He had ignored everything.

Because he trusted his wife.

And because he never imagined the truth could be this disturbing.

Michael slowly walked toward the hallway.

“Where did you hear it?”

Lily pointed.

“Behind that door.”

Everyone looked.

At the end of the hallway was a small storage room.

A room Daniel rarely used.

The door was slightly open.

Michael’s face became serious.

“Did you ever go inside?”

Lily shook her head.

“Mom told me never to.”

Daniel turned sharply toward Melissa.

“Why?”

Melissa looked away.

“I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

She didn’t answer.

Daniel felt anger building inside him.

“Everyone in this house seems to know something except me.”

Melissa lowered her voice.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Daniel laughed.

“Protect me?”

He looked around the room.

“My brother was hiding under my sofa. Someone else may have been hiding in my house. And you’re telling me you protected me?”

Michael interrupted.

“She wasn’t protecting you from me.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then from what?”

Michael didn’t respond immediately.

That hesitation told Daniel everything.

There was something much bigger.

Michael walked to the storage room door.

“Twenty-five years ago, when I disappeared, someone wanted me gone.”

Daniel followed him.

“You said the accident wasn’t an accident.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Michael reached for the door handle.

Before he could open it, a loud noise came from inside.

Everyone froze.

A sudden movement.

Like someone had knocked something over.

Lily grabbed her father’s hand.

“Daddy…”

Daniel felt his heartbeat accelerate.

Someone was inside.

Michael slowly turned the handle.

The door opened.

The room was dark.

Old boxes filled the corners.

Dust covered the floor.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Daniel reached for the light switch.

The bulb flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the room brightened.

Empty.

Nobody was there.

Daniel released a breath.

“Maybe Lily was mistaken.”

But Michael didn’t look convinced.

He walked inside slowly.

Then he stopped.

“What is that?”

Everyone looked.

Behind a stack of old boxes was something hidden.

A small camera.

Daniel’s face changed.

“A camera?”

Michael picked it up.

It was old, but still connected.

Melissa immediately became pale.

Daniel noticed.

“You know what this is.”

She said nothing.

“Melissa.”

Her hands started shaking.

“I didn’t put it there.”

“Then who did?”

No answer.

Michael examined the camera.

“It’s not for recording the room.”

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Michael turned it around.

The camera was pointed directly toward the living room.

Toward the sofa.

Toward the hidden compartment where Michael had been staying.

Daniel stared.

Someone had been watching.

Watching Michael.

Watching their family.

Watching everything that happened inside their home.

Then Michael noticed something else.

A small red light.

The camera was still active.

“It’s connected,” Michael whispered.

Daniel looked at him.

“To what?”

Michael slowly lifted his eyes.

“Someone is watching us right now.”

The room became cold.

Then suddenly…

The television in the living room turned on by itself.

Static filled the screen.

Everyone turned.

A few seconds later, the static disappeared.

A video appeared.

It showed the living room.

Recorded from the camera’s view.

But the date on the screen made Daniel’s blood run cold.

The footage was from three days ago.

Three days when Daniel had been at work.

Three days when Melissa had told him she was alone at home.

The video showed Melissa entering the room.

She looked around carefully.

Then she opened the hidden compartment under the sofa.

And someone climbed out.

Someone Daniel recognized.

Someone he never expected to see.

A man he thought was dead.

But the video showed something even more shocking.

Melissa wasn’t surprised.

She hugged him.

Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“You didn’t just know he was alive…”

He looked at the screen.

“You were helping him.”

Melissa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.”

But Daniel shook his head.

Because the biggest question was no longer who Michael was.

The question was…

May you like

Why had his wife been hiding his brother in their home for years?

And who was the person behind the camera, watching them all along?
