CHAPTER 11 — The Betrayal Nobody Expected
The person stepped into the light.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stared.
His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
Because the person standing in front of him was not a stranger.
Not Victor.
Not some enemy from the past.
It was someone who had been there from the beginning.
Someone who had held his hand when he was hurt.
Someone who had comforted him when Michael disappeared.
Someone he had trusted his entire life.
His mother.
Evelyn Carter.
Daniel felt the room spinning.
“Mom…”
Her face was older now.
Her hair was gray.
Her eyes were filled with sadness.
But it was her.
The woman he thought he had lost years ago.
“What are you doing here?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I was trying to stop you from finding this.”
Daniel stared.
“Stop me?”
His voice cracked.
“You knew?”
She slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
The word hurt more than he expected.
Daniel looked around.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had lied.
But his mother?
The person who had always protected him?
That was the one betrayal he never imagined.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked at the computer.
“Because your father’s confession was never meant to be found.”
Michael stepped forward.
“You knew about the videos.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes.”
Michael’s expression changed.
“How?”
She looked down.
“Because I helped create them.”
The room went silent.
Daniel looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn walked slowly into the hidden room.
“I was there the night your father recorded those messages.”
Daniel stared.
“You knew everything.”
She nodded.
“I knew more than anyone.”
Victor suddenly laughed.
A cold, bitter laugh.
“Finally.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The truth is coming out.”
Daniel looked at Victor.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor stared at Evelyn.
“She was never just a witness.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Be careful, Victor.”
Daniel noticed something.
The way they looked at each other.
Not like strangers.
Not like enemies.
Like two people who shared a painful history.
“You two know each other.”
Neither answered.
Daniel’s voice became louder.
“Answer me.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Daniel felt another piece of his world collapse.
“How?”
Victor answered.
“She worked with us.”
Daniel turned sharply.
“No.”
Evelyn looked hurt.
“Daniel, listen—”
“No.”
He stepped back.
“My entire life has been a lie.”
His voice broke.
“My father.”
“My brother.”
“My wife.”
“My own mother.”
He looked around the room.
“Who else?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had a good answer.
Lily quietly held onto Daniel’s hand.
That small gesture reminded him why he was still standing.
He couldn’t fall apart.
Not now.
Not in front of his daughter.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“What did you do?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I made a mistake.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.”
“I was young.”
“You were an adult.”
“I thought I was helping your father.”
“Helping him do what?”
Evelyn looked away.
“Protect the family.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“You were protecting secrets.”
Evelyn accepted the accusation.
Then she said something unexpected.
“You’re right.”
Everyone looked at her.
“I protected the wrong people.”
The room became quiet.
Evelyn looked at Michael.
“I should have told the truth twenty-five years ago.”
Michael’s expression softened slightly.
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“Because I was afraid of what would happen to you.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Everyone keeps using me as an excuse.”
His eyes filled with frustration.
“I was a child. You all made decisions for me. You all decided I couldn’t handle the truth.”
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“You’re right.”
Daniel looked surprised.
For once, someone admitted it.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father wasn’t the only person who made mistakes.”
She looked at Victor.
“He was trying to leave that world.”
Victor’s face darkened.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.”
Evelyn ignored him.
“Your father wanted out.”
Daniel listened carefully.
“He planned to expose everyone involved.”
Michael nodded.
“That’s why they came after him.”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“But there was one thing your father didn’t know.”
“What?”
She took a deep breath.
“The person who betrayed him…”
She paused.
“The person who gave away his location…”
Everyone waited.
Then Evelyn looked directly at Victor.
“It was Victor’s son.”
The room froze.
Victor’s expression changed.
“What?”
Michael looked shocked.
“That’s impossible.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice trembled.
“He discovered the evidence and tried to use it for himself.”
Daniel looked confused.
“But he died in the accident.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
A painful silence followed.
“But before he died…”
She looked at the computer.
“He sent the evidence to someone else.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“Who?”
Evelyn’s eyes moved toward the flash drive.
“Someone who was supposed to protect it.”
Daniel looked down at the drive.
“Who?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Your wife.”
Everyone turned toward Melissa.
Melissa closed her eyes.
Daniel stared.
“No…”
Melissa began crying.
“I can explain.”
Daniel stepped back.
“Not again.”
But before Melissa could speak…
The computer suddenly turned on by itself.
A new video appeared.
Not from his father.
Not from the past.
A live recording.
The camera showed their living room.
And in the footage…
Someone was entering the house right now.
Someone who should not have been there.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then slowly turned toward the front door.
