CHAPTER 4 — The Truth Melissa Buried

The video continued playing.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody blinked.

On the screen, Daniel watched a version of his life that he had never known existed.

His wife.

His home.

His brother.

All connected by a secret that had been hidden from him for years.

The footage showed Melissa opening the hidden compartment beneath the sofa.

Michael slowly climbed out.

But what shocked Daniel the most wasn’t seeing his brother alive.

It was the way Melissa looked at him.

There was no fear.

No confusion.

No surprise.

She looked like someone who had been waiting for him.

Like someone who already knew exactly what was happening.

Daniel turned away from the television.

His eyes met Melissa’s.

“Tell me the truth.”

His voice was quiet.

And somehow, that made it more frightening.

Melissa wiped her tears.

“Daniel…”

“No more excuses.”

He pointed toward the screen.

“No more secrets.”

Michael stood silently nearby.

Even he looked uncomfortable.

Daniel took a step closer to his wife.

“How long?”

Melissa looked down.

“How long did you know my brother was alive?”

A long pause followed.

Then she whispered:

“Eight years.”

Daniel felt like the air had been knocked out of him.

Eight years.

His wife had carried this secret for eight years.

While they ate dinner together.

While they celebrated birthdays.

While they watched their daughter grow up.

She knew.

And she said nothing.

“Eight years,” Daniel repeated.

His voice cracked.

“You looked me in the eyes every single day for eight years.”

Melissa began crying.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But you didn’t.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

She looked at Michael.

Then back at Daniel.

“Of losing you.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You already lost me when you decided I didn’t deserve the truth.”

Lily stood quietly in the corner, watching her parents.

She had never seen them like this before.

She had always believed her parents knew everything.

That they could fix anything.

But now even adults seemed powerless.

Michael finally spoke.

“Daniel, you need to hear the whole story.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“You’re the reason my family has been living with secrets.”

Michael accepted the accusation.

“I know.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I didn’t have a choice.”

Daniel’s anger grew.

“Everyone says that.”

Michael looked at him.

“Because it’s true.”

He walked toward the dining table and slowly sat down.

“Twenty-five years ago, the night of the accident, I discovered something I wasn’t supposed to know.”

Daniel crossed his arms.

“What?”

Michael looked at Melissa.

She closed her eyes.

“Your father.”

The room became silent.

Daniel froze.

“My father?”

Michael nodded.

“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.”

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“Don’t.”

“You deserve to know.”

“My father died years ago.”

“That doesn’t mean the truth died with him.”

Daniel stared at Michael.

“What are you talking about?”

Michael took a deep breath.

“Before the accident, I found financial records hidden in his office.”

Daniel frowned.

“Financial records?”

“He was involved in something illegal.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“My father was a businessman.”

Michael looked serious.

“He was more than that.”

Melissa stepped forward.

“Daniel…”

But he raised his hand.

“No.”

He looked at Michael.

“Keep going.”

Michael continued.

“He was moving money through fake companies. Millions of dollars.”

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“And you found out?”

“Yes.”

“What happened next?”

Michael looked down.

“The next day, my car brakes failed.”

Silence.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You’re saying someone tried to kill you?”

Michael nodded.

“I survived.”

“Then why didn’t you come home?”

“Because the person who tried to kill me knew I was alive.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why hide?”

Michael’s eyes became filled with pain.

“Because I saw what happened when I tried to tell the truth.”

He looked toward Melissa.

“People around me started disappearing.”

Daniel looked at his wife.

“What does she have to do with this?”

Melissa slowly sat down.

“Because I found him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Eight years ago.”

She nodded.

“I was volunteering at a shelter outside the city.”

Michael continued.

“She recognized me.”

Daniel stared.

“How?”

Melissa’s eyes filled with memories.

“Because Daniel used to talk about his brother every day when we first met.”

She smiled sadly.

“He told me everything about Michael. His favorite songs. His habits. The scar on his hand.”

She looked at Michael.

“When I saw him, I knew.”

Daniel’s anger softened slightly.

But confusion remained.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Melissa’s voice broke.

“Because Michael begged me not to.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“Why?”

Michael looked away.

“Because the people who wanted me dead were still looking for me.”

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

“Are they still?”

Michael didn’t answer.

And that silence was terrifying.

Then suddenly, the front door opened.

Everyone froze.

Daniel turned.

Nobody had been invited.

Nobody was expected.

Slow footsteps echoed through the house.

Someone was walking inside.

Michael’s face immediately changed.

He recognized the sound.

“No…”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

Michael whispered:

“They found me.”

The footsteps stopped.

A shadow appeared beneath the hallway light.

Lily grabbed her father’s hand.

And for the first time that night…

Michael looked truly afraid.

Because the person standing in their home wasn’t a stranger.

May you like

It was someone from his past.

Someone who had been searching for him for twenty-five years.
