CHAPTER 10 — The Confession

The screen remained black.

But Sarah’s words stayed in Daniel’s mind.

“Your father didn’t leave you a warning.”

“He left you a confession.”

Daniel stood in the hidden room, holding Lily tightly.

For years, he believed he understood his family.

He believed his father was gone.

He believed Michael was dead.

He believed his marriage was built on trust.

Now every belief had collapsed.

Every answer created another question.

“What confession?” Daniel whispered.

Nobody responded.

Michael looked at the floor.

Melissa looked away.

Victor remained silent.

And Daniel noticed something.

They were all afraid.

Not of him.

Not of each other.

Of what they might discover.

Daniel slowly turned toward Michael.

“You knew my father left something behind.”

Michael nodded.

“But not this.”

“You knew he was hiding the truth.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

Michael looked hurt.

“I thought keeping you away from it would keep you safe.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You keep saying that.”

His voice became quieter.

“But all you did was leave me blind.”

Michael accepted the words.

Because he knew they were true.

Daniel looked at the flash drive in Melissa’s hand.

“Play it.”

Melissa hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“Play it.”

She looked at everyone.

Then slowly connected the drive to the computer sitting in the hidden room.

The screen turned on.

A single video file appeared.

No name.

No date.

Just one word.

DANIEL.

Nobody moved.

Melissa clicked.

The video began.

At first, the screen showed darkness.

Then an old man appeared.

Daniel stopped breathing.

His father.

Older.

Tired.

His face carried a sadness Daniel had never seen before.

“Daniel,” his father said.

“If you are watching this, then I am gone.”

Daniel felt his eyes burn.

He hadn’t heard his father’s voice in years.

Not in memories.

Not in dreams.

Never like this.

The man on the screen continued.

“I know you will have questions.”

He paused.

“And you deserve answers.”

Daniel stepped closer.

His father looked directly into the camera.

“First, I need you to know something.”

His voice shook.

“Your brother Michael did not betray our family.”

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael lowered his eyes.

A tear fell.

Daniel continued watching.

“I spent years believing I could control everything.”

His father sighed.

“I thought money, power, and influence could protect the people I loved.”

The screen flickered.

“But I was wrong.”

Victor’s face changed.

Daniel noticed.

His father continued.

“I made a deal with dangerous people.”

The room became silent.

“I thought I could work with them temporarily.”

“I thought I could leave whenever I wanted.”

“But people like that don’t allow anyone to walk away.”

Daniel clenched his jaw.

The video continued.

“When Michael discovered the truth, he tried to expose me.”

Michael looked down.

“He was brave.”

Daniel looked at him.

His father’s voice became heavier.

“And I was afraid.”

A painful silence followed.

“I made a choice that I regret every day.”

Daniel whispered:

“What choice?”

The answer came from the screen.

“I allowed my own son to become a target.”

Michael closed his eyes.

Daniel felt his heart break.

His father continued.

“I could have protected Michael.”

“I could have told the truth.”

“But I chose fear.”

The video paused briefly.

Then his father said:

“The night of the accident…”

Everyone leaned closer.

“That night was not caused by Michael.”

Victor suddenly stepped forward.

“Turn it off.”

Nobody listened.

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?”

Victor’s face hardened.

“Because you don’t know what you’re hearing.”

Daniel turned back to the screen.

His father continued.

“The person responsible for the accident was someone I trusted.”

Daniel felt cold.

“Someone inside our circle.”

The video showed his father placing a folder on a table.

“Everything you need to know is inside this file.”

Then he looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, I need you to understand one thing.”

His voice became emotional.

“The greatest danger was never the people outside our family.”

Daniel held his breath.

“It was the person who knew exactly how to hurt us from the inside.”

The screen froze.

Then a final message appeared.

FILE TWO AVAILABLE

Everyone stared.

“There’s another video,” Michael whispered.

Daniel looked at the computer.

“Open it.”

Melissa clicked.

But before the second file could load…

The lights in the hidden room suddenly went out.

Again.

The sound of movement came from the hallway.

Someone was inside.

Daniel immediately pulled Lily behind him.

Michael moved forward.

Victor looked toward the door.

And this time…

Even Victor looked afraid.

A voice came from the darkness.

A familiar voice.

“You were never supposed to see that video.”

Daniel froze.

Because he recognized the voice.

It was someone he trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside him all night.

Someone who knew every secret.

Melissa whispered:

“No…”

Daniel slowly turned.

May you like

The person stepped into the light.

And the truth finally began to reveal itself.
