CHAPTER 6 — The Secret Hidden Upstairs

The sound from upstairs echoed through the entire house.

A heavy crash.

Then silence.

Everyone stared toward the ceiling.

Daniel felt his heart pounding.

His home had become a place full of strangers, secrets, and unanswered questions.

A place where everyone seemed to know more than he did.

He tightened his grip around Lily’s hand.

“Stay with me.”

Lily nodded, but her eyes were full of fear.

Michael slowly stepped away from the group.

“Don’t go up there alone,” Daniel warned.

Michael stopped.

For a moment, he looked surprised.

It was the first time Daniel had protected him instead of accusing him.

But the moment passed quickly.

“There may be something upstairs that explains everything.”

Victor gave a quiet laugh.

“You still think the truth will save you.”

Michael looked back.

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“The truth is the only thing you’re afraid of.”

Victor’s expression darkened.

Daniel noticed.

For the first time, Victor seemed less confident.

That meant something was upstairs.

Something important.

Daniel looked at Melissa.

“What’s up there?”

She didn’t answer.

His patience disappeared.

“Melissa.”

She swallowed.

“The attic.”

“You have an attic?”

“Yes.”

“And what’s inside?”

Her silence was enough.

Daniel turned away.

“I can’t believe this.”

He walked toward the stairs.

Michael followed.

Victor followed behind them.

Daniel immediately stopped.

“You’re not coming.”

Victor smiled.

“Trust me. You want me there.”

“Why?”

“Because when you see what’s inside, you’ll understand everything.”

Daniel hated that he was right.

But he needed answers.

All of them.

The four adults slowly climbed the stairs.

Lily stayed downstairs with Melissa.

Daniel didn’t want his daughter anywhere near the truth waiting above them.

The attic door was old.

Covered in dust.

Daniel looked at it.

“How long has this been locked?”

Melissa’s voice came from behind.

“Eight years.”

Daniel turned.

“You locked it after you found Michael?”

She nodded.

“Why?”

“Because he told me never to open it.”

Michael looked at the door.

“I was afraid someone would find what was inside.”

Victor smiled.

“Someone did.”

Daniel grabbed the handle.

He pulled.

The door opened with a loud creak.

The smell of old paper and dust filled the air.

The attic was dark.

But something immediately caught Daniel’s attention.

Boxes.

Dozens of them.

All carefully organized.

Not abandoned.

Hidden.

Daniel walked closer.

One box had a name written on it.

CARTER FAMILY RECORDS

His hands became cold.

He opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Old files.

And newspaper articles.

Daniel picked up the first article.

His eyes widened.

The headline read:

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN CONNECTED TO SECRET FINANCIAL INVESTIGATION

The picture showed his father.

Daniel felt sick.

He picked up another document.

Then another.

Everything connected.

Fake companies.

Hidden accounts.

Money transfers.

Names of powerful people.

Including Victor.

Daniel looked at him.

“You were involved with my father.”

Victor remained silent.

Michael answered.

“Yes.”

Daniel turned.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Michael looked ashamed.

“Because I thought I could handle it.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You almost died because you tried to handle it alone.”

Michael looked down.

“I was young.”

“You were my brother.”

The words hurt Michael.

Daniel continued.

“You should have trusted me.”

Michael’s eyes filled with regret.

“I wanted to.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because I knew what they would do to you.”

Daniel looked at the files.

“And they did what?”

Michael pointed toward Victor.

“They threatened everyone I cared about.”

Victor suddenly spoke.

“You’re forgetting something.”

Everyone turned.

Victor walked closer.

“Your brother wasn’t the only one making choices.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Victor looked at Michael.

“Tell him.”

Michael remained silent.

Daniel’s frustration returned.

“Tell me what?”

Michael took a deep breath.

“The night of the accident…”

He stopped.

Daniel waited.

“I wasn’t alone in the car.”

The room went quiet.

“What?”

Michael looked at the floor.

“Someone was with me.”

Daniel stared.

“Who?”

Michael looked toward Victor.

“His son.”

Victor’s expression changed.

Daniel felt confused.

“Victor’s son?”

Michael nodded.

“He knew about the evidence too.”

“And?”

Michael’s voice became heavy.

“He didn’t survive the crash.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at Victor.

For the first time, Victor looked angry.

Not calm.

Not controlled.

Angry.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.”

Michael stepped forward.

“I’m telling the truth.”

Victor shook his head.

“You caused his death.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Michael looked devastated.

“I didn’t mean to.”

Daniel felt the room spinning.

Twenty-five years of believing one story.

And now every person involved was telling a different version.

Victor pointed at Michael.

“He destroyed my family.”

Michael looked back.

“And you destroyed mine.”

The tension became unbearable.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A small envelope sitting at the bottom of the box.

His name was written on it.

Not Michael’s.

Not Melissa’s.

His.

DANIEL.

His hands trembled as he picked it up.

“Who wrote this?”

Michael’s face changed.

He recognized the handwriting.

“Oh no…”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

Michael whispered:

“That’s your father’s handwriting.”

Daniel slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Only one sentence was written.

A sentence that changed everything.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from the truth.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Because beneath that sentence was a name.

May you like

A name he never expected.

A name that would destroy everything he believed about his own family.
