CHAPTER 2 — The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Daniel couldn’t move.
The words echoed inside his head over and over again.
“I never died.”
For a few seconds, he convinced himself he had misunderstood.
Maybe the man was lying.
Maybe this was some kind of cruel trick.
Maybe the shock had made his mind create a connection that didn’t exist.
Because the truth was impossible.
His brother Michael Carter had died when he was sixteen years old.
Daniel still remembered that day.
The rain.
The phone call.
His parents’ broken faces.
The funeral.
The empty bedroom that remained untouched for years.
Michael was gone.
Everyone knew it.
Everyone accepted it.
But now, a man was standing inside his living room, claiming to be the brother Daniel had buried decades ago.
Daniel stared at him.
“Prove it.”
His voice was cold.
The stranger looked down.
“Daniel…”
“Don’t say my name like you know me.”
The room became tense.
“You want me to believe you’re my brother? Then prove it.”
Michael slowly nodded.
“I knew you would ask.”
He reached into his worn jacket pocket.
Daniel immediately stepped back.
“Don’t.”
Michael stopped.
“I’m not reaching for a weapon.”
He carefully pulled out a small, old metal box.
It was scratched and faded from years of use.
Daniel’s breathing changed the moment he saw it.
Because he recognized that box.
No one else knew about it.
Not Melissa.
Not his parents.
Not anyone.
That box had belonged to him and Michael when they were children.
They used to hide their most important treasures inside it.
Old baseball cards.
Coins.
Little drawings.
Secrets only brothers shared.
Michael opened the box.
Inside was a small, folded piece of paper.
Daniel stared.
“No…”
Michael unfolded it.
The handwriting was messy and uneven.
A child’s handwriting.
Daniel stepped closer.
He knew those words.
He had written them when he was eight years old.
“Daniel and Michael forever. No matter what happens.”
His chest tightened.
That sentence had disappeared decades ago.
He thought he had lost it forever.
“How…” Daniel whispered.
Michael looked at him.
“Because I kept it.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with confusion.
“Where have you been?”
Michael looked away.
“That’s a long story.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice became firm.
“You don’t get to walk into my house after twenty-five years and say it’s a long story.”
He pointed toward the hidden compartment.
“You were living under my sofa.”
Michael lowered his head.
“I didn’t have a choice.”
Daniel turned toward Melissa.
“And she knew?”
Melissa wiped her tears.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt more than anything.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“You knew my brother was alive?”
“I found out years ago.”
Daniel froze.
“Years ago?”
Melissa nodded slowly.
“And you never told me?”
Her silence was enough.
Daniel felt betrayed.
Not just by a stranger.
Not just by the impossible situation in front of him.
But by the person standing beside him every day.
The woman he trusted.
The woman who shared his home.
His daughter looked up at him.
“Daddy…”
Daniel looked down.
Lily’s face was full of sadness.
“Mommy told me not to tell you.”
Daniel’s heart sank.
He looked at Melissa.
“You involved our daughter?”
Melissa immediately shook her head.
“No, Daniel. It wasn’t like that.”
“Then what was it?”
She had no answer.
Michael stepped forward.
“Melissa was trying to protect someone.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Protect who?”
Michael remained silent.
That silence made Daniel even more suspicious.
“Who?”
Finally, Michael spoke.
“Me.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe my wife hid you in my house because she was protecting you?”
Michael looked at him.
“You don’t understand what happened twenty-five years ago.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What happened?”
Michael looked toward the window.
For the first time, fear appeared on his face.
“The accident wasn’t an accident.”
Nobody spoke.
The words changed everything.
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“What are you saying?”
Michael took a deep breath.
“I was never supposed to survive that night.”
Melissa covered her mouth.
Daniel noticed.
And that was when he realized something even more disturbing.
His wife didn’t look surprised.
She already knew.
“You knew this too,” Daniel whispered.
Melissa looked away.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Daniel felt his entire life collapsing around him.
“Tell me everything.”
Melissa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to.”
“When?”
She couldn’t answer.
“When were you going to tell me?”
The little girl quietly stepped between them.
“Daddy…”
Everyone looked at Lily.
The child’s voice trembled.
“There’s something else.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“What else?”
Lily looked at her mother.
Then at Michael.
“He wasn’t the only person hiding in our house.”
The room went silent again.
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“What did you say?”
Lily pointed toward the hallway.
“I heard another person.”
Michael’s expression changed instantly.
“What?”
Lily nodded.
“At night.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
And for the first time, the man who had spent years hiding seemed genuinely afraid.
Because whatever secret had brought Michael back…
May you like
It wasn’t the only secret inside their home.
And someone else was still watching them.
