CHAPTER 5 — The Man at the Door

Nobody breathed.

The shadow beneath the hallway light remained still.

For several seconds, the entire house felt frozen in time.

Daniel could hear only one thing.

His daughter’s frightened breathing.

Lily’s small hand was wrapped tightly around his fingers.

She was scared.

And for the first time, Daniel realized something that hurt more than all the secrets combined.

His daughter had been living with this fear alone.

Inside her own home.

While the adults around her kept pretending everything was normal.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stay behind me.”

He placed himself between Lily and the hallway.

Michael immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No?”

Michael lowered his voice.

“You don’t understand who that is.”

“Then explain.”

Michael stared toward the hallway.

The shadow moved slightly.

A shoe stepped into the light.

Then another.

A man appeared.

He was in his early sixties.

Tall.

Well-dressed.

Calm.

Almost too calm.

He wore a dark coat and carried himself like someone who had never been afraid of anything.

Daniel didn’t recognize him.

But Michael did.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Victor…”

The man smiled.

“So you remember me.”

Melissa stepped back.

Daniel noticed.

She knew him too.

“Who is he?” Daniel asked.

Nobody answered.

Victor slowly walked into the living room.

His eyes moved around the house.

Then he looked at the sofa.

The hidden compartment.

The camera.

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Interesting.”

Daniel’s anger returned.

“You’re in my house.”

Victor looked at him.

“And you’re Daniel.”

The way he said his name made Daniel uncomfortable.

“You know me?”

Victor smiled.

“I’ve known about you for a long time.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“What do you want?”

Victor ignored the question.

Instead, he looked at Michael.

“You caused a lot of trouble by staying alive.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Leave them alone.”

Victor laughed softly.

“Still protecting people who don’t know the truth.”

Daniel looked between them.

“What truth?”

Victor turned toward him.

“Your brother has told you his version, I assume.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“My brother told me he was almost killed.”

Victor nodded.

“Of course he did.”

“Is it true?”

Victor remained silent.

That silence made Daniel even more suspicious.

“Answer me.”

Victor slowly walked closer.

“Your brother was always good at making himself the victim.”

Michael’s face hardened.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Victor smiled.

“Twenty-five years later, and you’re still hiding behind other people.”

Daniel looked at Michael.

“What is he talking about?”

Michael didn’t answer.

And that scared Daniel more than anything.

Because Michael had always looked afraid of Victor.

But now…

He also looked guilty.

Melissa stepped between them.

“Victor, this ends tonight.”

Victor looked at her.

“You should have stayed out of this.”

Daniel turned toward his wife.

“You know him?”

Melissa didn’t respond.

“Melissa.”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Daniel felt betrayed all over again.

“Another secret?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

His voice became louder.

“But nobody is protecting me. Everyone is protecting the truth from me.”

Lily started crying quietly.

Daniel immediately lowered his voice.

He hated that his daughter was watching all of this.

Victor noticed.

He looked at Lily.

“So this is your daughter.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t look at her.”

Victor stopped.

For the first time, his calm expression changed.

“Daniel, you have no idea what you’re involved in.”

“Then explain.”

Victor looked at Michael.

“Ask your brother what happened the night he disappeared.”

Michael remained silent.

Daniel looked at him.

“Michael?”

No answer.

“Tell me.”

Michael’s eyes filled with regret.

“I made a mistake.”

Daniel froze.

“What mistake?”

Victor answered.

“He wasn’t just a witness.”

Michael looked down.

“He was involved.”

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at his brother.

“What?”

Michael swallowed.

“I was trying to expose our father.”

“That’s what you said.”

Michael nodded.

“But I didn’t tell you everything.”

Daniel felt his heart sink.

“What did you do?”

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“I took something.”

“What?”

“Evidence.”

Victor smiled.

“And that evidence destroyed many powerful people.”

Daniel looked at Victor.

“Including you?”

Victor didn’t answer.

Michael stepped closer.

“The evidence was hidden before I disappeared.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You mean all these years…”

Michael nodded.

“It has been somewhere in this house.”

Daniel looked around.

His house.

The place where he raised his daughter.

The place where he thought he was safe.

“You hid evidence here?”

Michael looked at him.

“No.”

His eyes moved toward Melissa.

“She did.”

Daniel turned slowly.

Melissa’s face went pale.

“What?”

She started crying.

“I didn’t know what it was.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You hid something in my house?”

“I was trying to keep it safe.”

Victor smiled.

“And now everyone knows where it is.”

Michael suddenly looked toward the ceiling.

His expression changed.

“Wait.”

Daniel noticed.

“What?”

Michael looked at the camera.

“The camera.”

Victor smiled.

“What about it?”

Michael’s face became pale.

“You weren’t watching us.”

Victor said nothing.

“You were waiting.”

A terrifying silence filled the room.

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Victor didn’t come here because he found me.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then why?”

Michael whispered:

“Because he knows we found the evidence.”

At that exact moment…

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

Another person was inside the house.

Victor smiled.

May you like

And this time…

Nobody in the room knew who was coming next.
