CHAPTER 14 — The Last Conversation

The name hung in the air.

Richard.

After twenty-five years of silence, the man who had lived in the shadows finally stood inside Daniel’s home.

The same home where secrets had been buried.

The same home where his family had hidden the truth.

Richard Hale looked exactly like the man from the photograph.

Older.

More tired.

But still carrying the same confidence.

The confidence of someone who believed he was always one step ahead.

Daniel stared at him.

“You’re alive.”

Richard smiled.

“So many people seem surprised by that.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You should have stayed gone.”

Richard looked at him.

“Interesting.”

A small smile appeared.

“The man who spent years pretending he had control.”

Victor’s face tightened.

“And you think you do?”

Richard ignored him.

His eyes moved to Daniel.

“You have your father’s eyes.”

Daniel didn’t move.

“Don’t talk about my father.”

Richard nodded slowly.

“You have every right to hate him.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Richard walked farther into the room.

“Your father made mistakes.”

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t pretend you’re better than him.”

Richard looked at Michael.

“You survived.”

Michael’s expression hardened.

“Yes.”

“And that ruined everything.”

Daniel noticed.

Richard wasn’t denying anything.

He was admitting it.

“You caused the accident.”

The room became silent.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“I didn’t plan for it to happen that way.”

Daniel felt anger rising.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Richard calmly placed the briefcase on the table.

“I expect you to understand.”

He opened it.

Inside were old documents.

Photos.

Records.

The history of their family.

“I spent twenty-five years trying to fix what your father started.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Fix?”

“You think destroying my family was fixing something?”

Richard looked at him.

“Your family was already destroyed.”

Michael moved forward.

“You manipulated everyone.”

Richard looked at him.

“You were young.”

“I was your friend.”

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

“And that was my mistake.”

The words shocked everyone.

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked toward the documents.

“Your father and I built everything together.”

He paused.

“Then he decided he wanted to become a hero.”

Sarah looked angry.

“He wanted to tell the truth.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“He realized what he had done.”

Richard looked at her.

“And I couldn’t allow that.”

Daniel felt sick.

“So you tried to silence him.”

“Yes.”

Nobody expected the answer to be so direct.

Richard continued.

“But your father was smarter than I thought.”

He pointed toward the flash drive.

“He collected evidence.”

Michael looked at him.

“And you spent years searching for it.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked around.

“All these years…”

Richard nodded.

“I needed that evidence destroyed.”

“And when you couldn’t find it?”

Richard looked at Melissa.

“I watched.”

Melissa lowered her eyes.

“You used my family.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became cold.

“Your family was already keeping secrets.”

Daniel felt the truth of that statement.

And he hated it.

Because it was true.

Richard looked at him.

“Your mother protected your father.”

He looked at Michael.

“Your brother protected the evidence.”

He looked at Melissa.

“Your wife protected your brother.”

Then he looked at Daniel.

“And you were the only person everyone wanted to keep innocent.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“Because I was the only one they loved.”

Richard was silent.

For the first time, he had no answer.

Then Lily stepped forward.

Everyone turned.

Daniel immediately moved closer.

“Lily, stay behind me.”

But the little girl looked at Richard.

“You scared everyone.”

The room became quiet.

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.”

“But you lost.”

Nobody expected those words.

Richard stared.

Lily continued.

“Because Daddy knows the truth now.”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

And something changed inside him.

For months, Lily had been treated like she was just a frightened child.

But she had seen everything.

She had noticed everything.

She had been the first person to discover the hidden compartment.

The first person to know someone was watching.

Richard slowly looked away.

Then he smiled.

“You’re stronger than you realize.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“It ends now.”

Richard looked at him.

“Do you really think so?”

Daniel held up the flash drive.

“The evidence is here.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

Then he smiled.

“But there is something you don’t know.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Richard looked at Michael.

“Your brother never told you the full truth.”

Michael’s face changed.

Daniel turned.

“What now?”

Richard continued.

“The evidence doesn’t just expose me.”

A pause.

“It exposes your father.”

Daniel looked at the flash drive.

Richard stepped closer.

“Your father’s confession wasn’t the end.”

He pointed toward the drive.

“It was the beginning.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“What else is there?”

Richard smiled.

“Everything.”

Then suddenly…

A loud siren echoed outside.

Police lights flashed through the windows.

Everyone looked toward the street.

Richard calmly raised his hands.

Daniel stared.

“What did you do?”

Richard smiled.

“I made sure the truth finally came out.”

The front door opened.

Officers entered.

But they weren’t looking at Richard.

They were looking at Daniel.

One officer stepped forward.

“Daniel Carter?”

Daniel froze.

“Yes?”

The officer held up a document.

“We need you to come with us.”

The room went silent.

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?”

The officer looked at the flash drive.

“Because evidence connected to this case was found under your name.”

Everyone froze.

Michael whispered:

“No…”

Daniel stared.

Someone had set him up.

And after twenty-five years of secrets…

The final person being blamed was him.
