CHAPTER 13 — The Name Hidden for Twenty-Five Years

Nobody spoke.
The silence after Ethan’s words was unbearable.
“Someone you have known your entire life.”
Daniel felt like the ground beneath him had disappeared.
He looked around the room.
Every person standing there had a history with his family.
Every person had hidden something.
Every person had a reason to lie.
But who could have wanted his family destroyed?
His eyes moved from one face to another.
Michael.
Melissa.
Evelyn.
Victor.
Sarah.
Ethan.
“Just say the name,” Daniel whispered.
Ethan looked at the flash drive.
“Your father recorded everything.”
Daniel picked up the drive.
“Then let’s watch it.”
Nobody stopped him.
Because everyone knew the truth had gone too far to hide.
Daniel connected the drive again.
The screen turned on.
Three files appeared.
The first one was the confession they had already seen.
The second file was locked.
The third file had a title.
THE FINAL TRUTH.
Daniel clicked.
The video started.
His father appeared again.
But this time, he looked different.
Not afraid.
Determined.
“Daniel.”
His father’s voice filled the room.
“If you are watching this, then the people I feared have finally found you.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
His father continued.
“I spent many years blaming others for my mistakes.”
The older man looked down.
“But the truth is, I created many of the problems that destroyed our family.”
Daniel listened carefully.
“I built relationships with dangerous people because I believed power could protect us.”
A pause.
“It only made us targets.”
The screen changed.
Documents appeared.
Names.
Dates.
Records.
Then his father said:
“Victor was not the person who started this.”
Everyone looked at Victor.
Even he looked surprised.
“He was only one piece of a much larger plan.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then who?”
His father continued.
“The person who betrayed me was someone I trusted more than anyone.”
Daniel’s heartbeat increased.
“He was someone I welcomed into my home.”
A picture appeared on the screen.
A man.
Older.
Gray hair.
Daniel had seen him before.
But he couldn’t place him.
Then his father said the name.
“Richard Hale.”
The room became silent.
Daniel looked confused.
“Who is Richard Hale?”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Michael looked shocked.
Melissa whispered:
“No…”
Daniel turned.
“You know him.”
Nobody answered.
“Who is he?”
Evelyn slowly sat down.
“Your father’s closest friend.”
Daniel stared.
“My father never mentioned him.”
“Because he disappeared after the accident.”
Michael looked at the screen.
“He was supposed to be dead.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He wasn’t.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“What are you saying?”
Ethan looked toward the front door.
“He’s been alive this entire time.”
A terrible silence followed.
Sarah spoke quietly.
“Richard was the person who helped your father build his company.”
Daniel looked at the documents.
“And he betrayed him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor answered unexpectedly.
“Because he wanted everything your father had.”
Everyone looked at Victor.
Daniel frowned.
“You knew?”
Victor looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Victor looked at the floor.
“Because I was protecting myself.”
For the first time, Daniel saw Victor without arrogance.
Only regret.
The video continued.
Daniel’s father spoke again.
“Richard believed he deserved my success.”
“He believed my family was the only thing standing between him and complete control.”
The screen showed a final document.
A payment record.
A signature.
Daniel leaned closer.
Then he froze.
Because the signature belonged to someone else.
Not Richard.
Not Victor.
Not his father.
It belonged to…
Melissa.
Daniel slowly turned.
Everyone followed his eyes.
Melissa looked terrified.
“No…”
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“Why is your name there?”
Melissa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
But Ethan stepped forward.
“You do.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What are you saying?”
Ethan looked at Melissa.
“She wasn’t working with Richard.”
Melissa immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Ethan continued.
“She was trying to stop him.”
Daniel stared.
“Then why is her name on the payment record?”
Sarah answered.
“Because Richard used her identity.”
Daniel looked confused.
“He framed her?”
“Yes.”
Melissa began crying.
“I found out what Richard was doing.”
Daniel looked at her.
“And you never told me.”
“I was afraid.”
Again.
That word.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Everyone had been afraid.
Fear had controlled their family for decades.
Then the video reached the final part.
His father looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if Richard is still alive…”
A pause.
“Do not look for him.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
His father’s face became serious.
“Because he will find you first.”
The video suddenly ended.
At that exact moment…
The lights flickered.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Calm.
Holding a briefcase.
Daniel froze.
Because he knew that face.
He had seen it in the video.
He had seen it in old family photographs.
The man smiled.
“Hello, Daniel.”
The room went cold.
“After all these years…”
The man stepped inside.
“It’s time we finally talked.”
Michael whispered:
“Richard…”
May you like
And the man smiled.
“Miss me?”
