Chapter 9 — The Debt He Never Told Me About

Chapter 9 — The Debt He Never Told Me About
The silence after my father’s question felt heavier than anything that had happened before.
“Dominic.”
My father’s voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“Answer the question.”
Everyone was watching him.
The guests.
His family.
The security team.

And me.
For three years, I had believed I knew my husband.
I believed he was kind.
I believed he was gentle.
I believed he was simply too afraid to stand up to his family.
But now...
I wasn’t sure what I knew anymore.
Dominic looked at Chloe.
His expression was filled with anger.
“Why would you say that?”
Chloe crossed her arms.
“Because it’s true.”
“Chloe, stop.”
“No.”
Her voice became sharper.
“You spent years pretending you were protecting Vivienne.”
She laughed.
“But the truth is, you needed her.”
Dominic’s face changed.
I felt a cold feeling move through my chest.
“Dominic?”
He looked at me.
And that was all it took.
I didn’t need an explanation.
I already knew.
He was hiding something.
“Tell me,” I whispered.
He swallowed.
“Vivienne…”
“Tell me the truth.”
My voice remained calm.
But inside, everything was falling apart.
My father stood beside me.
Not interfering.
Just watching.
Waiting.
Dominic ran a hand through his hair.
“I was going to tell you.”
I closed my eyes for a moment.
That sentence.
People always said that when the truth had already been buried too long.
“When?” I asked.
He looked down.
“I don’t know.”
I nodded slowly.
“Exactly.”
Chloe smiled.
“Let me explain.”
Dominic turned toward her.
“Don’t.”
But Chloe continued.
“Dominic’s family business started having problems two years ago.”
Eleanor immediately interrupted.
“That is private.”
My father looked at her.
“Not anymore.”
Eleanor became silent.
Chloe continued.
“The company had major losses.”
She looked at Dominic.
“He borrowed money to keep it alive.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Enough.”
“No.”
Chloe stepped forward.
“You want everyone to believe you’re the victim?”
She pointed toward me.
“You married her because you loved her?”
The room became uncomfortable.
I stared at Dominic.
He didn’t answer.
That hurt more than anything.
“Dominic.”
My voice was quiet.
“Is that what happened?”
He immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“Then explain.”
He took a deep breath.
“I loved you before I knew anything about your family.”
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But there was something missing.
The truth.
“Did you know about my inheritance before we got married?”
His silence lasted only a second.
But it was enough.
My heart sank.
“Yes.”
The answer hit harder than any insult Chloe had ever spoken.
Dominic quickly stepped forward.
“But Vivienne, that wasn’t why I married you.”
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me about the debt?”
He had no answer.
Because there was no good answer.
My father looked at Dominic.
“You allowed my daughter to believe she was building a life with an honest man.”
Dominic lowered his head.
“I was ashamed.”
My father’s expression remained cold.
“Shame does not excuse deception.”
I looked away.
Because that was exactly what I felt.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Disappointment.
The worst kind of pain came from someone you trusted.
Someone you defended.
Someone you thought would never hurt you.
Dominic’s voice became desperate.
“Vivienne, please.”
“I never wanted your money.”
I looked at him.
“But you needed it.”
He stopped.
That silence was the answer.
Chloe watched with satisfaction.
She thought she had finally destroyed me.
She thought revealing Dominic’s secret would make me weak.
But she didn’t understand something.
I had already survived the worst part.
The moment when everyone stood against me.
The moment when my own husband stayed silent.
The moment when I realized I was alone.
Everything after that was just the truth coming out.
My father looked at the documents again.
“There is something else.”
Everyone turned.
“What now?” Eleanor asked.
My father looked at Dominic.
“The debt was not caused only by business losses.”
Dominic froze.
My father continued.
“Someone transferred money from the company account before the losses were reported.”
The room went silent.
Chloe’s expression changed.
“What?”
My father looked directly at her.
“The money went to an account connected to the Bennett family.”
Nobody moved.
Dominic looked at Chloe.
“What did you do?”
For the first time...
Chloe looked afraid.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Because the truth had reached a place even she could not control.
My father placed the documents on the table.
“The wedding ring.”
“The stolen money.”
“The investigation.”
He looked around the ballroom.
“These were not separate events.”
His eyes landed on Chloe.
“They were part of the same plan.”
The room went completely silent.
And I realized something terrifying.
Tonight was never just about destroying me.
Someone had been planning something much bigger.
May you like
And I had been the easiest person to blame.
To be continued...
