Chapter 1 — The Owner of the Ballroom

Chapter 1 — The Owner of the Ballroom

The moment I ended the call, I placed my phone back into my trembling hand.

Not because I was afraid.

Because for the first time in years, I realized I no longer had to beg anyone to believe me.

The ballroom remained frozen.

Two hundred guests watched as Chloe stood in the center of the room, wearing a wedding gown worth more than most people's yearly salaries, her expression filled with confidence.

She thought she had won.

She thought she had finally proven what she had always believed about me.

That I was insignificant.

That I was someone who could be humiliated without consequences.

Chloe crossed her arms.

“Well?”

Her voice carried through the silence.

“Are you going to explain why your father is supposedly coming here?”

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

I said nothing.

Eleanor stepped closer, adjusting her expensive pearl necklace.

“Oh, please,” she said loudly. “This is getting ridiculous.”

She looked around the room.

“She’s trying to create a distraction because she knows she’s guilty.”

Several people lowered their eyes.

I could see the doubt spreading.

Not because they believed her.

But because they were afraid to challenge her.

That was always how Chloe and Eleanor operated.

They were wealthy.

They were connected.

They were loud.

And they had spent years making everyone believe their version of the truth before anyone had a chance to speak.

Dominic finally walked toward me.

“Vivienne, please.”

His voice was soft.

Too soft.

The same voice he used every time he wanted me to surrender.

“Let’s just leave before this gets worse.”

I stared at him.

“Leave?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Yes. We can talk about this privately.”

I almost laughed.

Privately.

That was his favorite word.

Every insult from his family was supposed to be handled privately.

Every cruel comment was supposed to be forgotten privately.

Every time Chloe embarrassed me, Dominic would apologize afterward.

Never during.

Never when I needed him.

Only when no one else was watching.

“You watched them tear my dress apart,” I whispered.

His face changed.

“Vivienne…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Don’t say my name like you’re hurt.”

The room became even quieter.

“You stood there while your mother humiliated your pregnant wife in front of everyone.”

Dominic looked down.

And that answer told me everything.

A person’s silence was still a choice.

And he had chosen them.

Before he could respond, Chloe suddenly laughed.

“Wow.”

She looked around dramatically.

“Are we really making this about her now?”

She lifted her empty hand.

“My diamond ring worth one million dollars disappeared during my wedding reception.”

Then she pointed at me again.

“And somehow, she’s the victim?”

A few guests murmured.

But before anyone could speak...

The large wooden doors at the entrance of the ballroom opened.

Slowly.

Everyone turned.

A group of men in dark suits entered first.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

They were not wedding guests.

They moved with purpose.

Behind them walked an older man wearing a perfectly tailored navy suit.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His expression was calm.

But the entire room seemed to recognize his presence.

Chloe’s smile disappeared.

Eleanor stopped speaking.

Even Dominic froze.

Because everyone in that ballroom knew exactly who had just walked in.

My father.

Alexander Whitmore.

The founder of Whitmore Global Holdings.

The man whose name was engraved on the entrance wall of the hotel.

The man who owned the ballroom where Chloe had accused me of stealing.

My father looked across the room.

His eyes found me immediately.

His expression changed when he saw my torn dress.

For the first time that evening...

I saw anger in his eyes.

Not loud anger.

Not reckless anger.

The kind of anger that came from someone who had spent a lifetime protecting the people he loved.

He walked toward me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“Vivienne.”

His voice softened.

“My daughter.”

I felt tears forming in my eyes.

Not because I was weak.

Because after years of standing alone...

Someone had finally stood beside me.

My father removed his jacket and placed it over my shoulders, covering the torn fabric.

Then he turned toward the crowd.

His voice became cold.

“Someone explain to me why my pregnant daughter is standing here in a damaged dress.”

Nobody answered.

Chloe swallowed.

Eleanor looked away.

And Dominic...

For the first time in three years...

Looked afraid.

My father glanced at the security cameras above the entrance.

Then he spoke four words that changed everything.

“Play the footage.”

The ballroom went silent.

May you like

Because everyone suddenly realized...

The truth had been recording the entire time.
