Chapter 15 — The Woman Behind the Entire Scheme

Chapter 15 — The Woman Behind the Entire Scheme

The ballroom became completely silent.

The security officer’s words seemed impossible to process.

“It belongs to Eleanor Bennett.”

Every person in the room turned toward my mother-in-law.

Eleanor.

The woman who had spent years criticizing me.

The woman who had called me unsuitable for her family.

The woman who had torn my dress apart in front of everyone.

Now she stood frozen.

For the first time all night...

She looked afraid.

“That’s a lie,” Eleanor said quickly.

Her voice was louder than necessary.

A nervous reaction.

My father noticed.

He always noticed.

He looked at the security officer.

“Show us.”

The officer nodded and connected the information to the screen.

A bank record appeared.

A private account.

A series of transactions.

And at the top...

Account Holder: Eleanor Bennett.

The guests immediately began whispering.

“No way.”

“She was involved?”

“This family is full of secrets.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don’t know anything about that account.”

My father calmly looked at her.

“Then you won’t mind explaining the transactions.”

She said nothing.

The officer continued.

“The account received multiple payments over the last six months.”

My father looked at the screen.

“From different sources.”

He paused.

“Including a company owned by Chloe Bennett.”

Chloe looked at her mother.

“Mom?”

For the first time, Chloe seemed genuinely confused.

Eleanor avoided her eyes.

That was when everyone realized something.

Chloe might have been the face of the plan.

But Eleanor...

She was something else.

She was the person standing behind it.

My father continued.

“The account was used to pay for private services.”

The officer brought up another document.

“Investigators.”

“Consultants.”

“Legal preparation.”

My stomach tightened.

The investigation.

The one Chloe claimed was about curiosity.

It wasn’t curiosity.

It was preparation.

Eleanor had been building a case against me.

“Why?” I finally asked.

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard.

Eleanor looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw the truth.

She didn’t hate me because I was poor.

She didn’t hate me because of my personality.

She hated me because I represented something she could never control.

Power.

Independence.

Freedom.

“You want to know why?” Eleanor asked.

The room went silent.

She looked at me.

“Because you ruined my son.”

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

Eleanor continued.

“Before you, Dominic understood his place.”

I stared at her.

“His place?”

“Yes.”

Her expression hardened.

“He was supposed to build a life with someone who understood our family.”

I almost laughed.

“Someone who followed your rules.”

She didn’t deny it.

Instead, she looked at my father.

“You think money makes people better?”

My father remained calm.

“No.”

He paused.

“But I know cruelty makes people smaller.”

The guests became silent.

Eleanor ignored him.

“When Vivienne came into our lives, everything changed.”

She pointed at me.

“She made Dominic question us.”

I looked at Dominic.

And strangely...

That hurt.

Because part of it was true.

I had encouraged him to think for himself.

To make his own choices.

To stop living only for his family’s approval.

But apparently...

That was considered a threat.

Eleanor continued.

“She took him away from us.”

Dominic looked shocked.

“Mom, that’s not true.”

She turned toward him.

“You defended her.”

“Yes.”

“Against your own family.”

“Yes.”

Her face filled with anger.

“And that’s why I had to fix it.”

The room went silent.

Dominic stared at her.

“What did you do?”

Eleanor looked away.

But everyone already knew.

My father stepped forward.

“You created the conflict.”

Eleanor said nothing.

“You encouraged Chloe to attack Vivienne.”

Silence.

“You approved the false accusation.”

Silence.

“You helped create a situation where Dominic would have no choice but to separate from my daughter.”

Eleanor’s expression remained cold.

“Yes.”

The single word shocked everyone.

Even Chloe.

“You admit it?”

Chloe whispered.

Eleanor looked at her daughter.

“I did what had to be done.”

Chloe stared at her.

“But you ruined everything.”

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“Don’t blame me for your mistakes.”

And there it was.

The truth.

The family that had spent years pretending to be united was finally turning against itself.

Dominic looked at his mother.

“You planned to destroy my marriage?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I planned to save you.”

“By hurting my wife?”

“By removing a problem.”

The words were so cold that the entire room felt uncomfortable.

I looked at Dominic.

And I saw something break in his expression.

Because he finally understood.

His family had not protected him.

They had controlled him.

My father stepped closer.

“Eleanor.”

She looked at him.

“You made one mistake.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“You thought Vivienne had no one.”

The room became quiet.

My father placed his hand gently on my shoulder.

“But she was never alone.”

For years, they believed my silence meant weakness.

They believed my kindness meant they could hurt me.

They believed I had no power because I refused to show it.

But they were wrong.

Then the security officer received another notification.

His face changed.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

My father turned.

“What is it?”

The officer hesitated.

“We found the original plan documents.”

My father frowned.

“Original?”

“Yes.”

“The first version.”

Everyone looked confused.

The officer continued:

“The version created before Chloe’s wedding preparations began.”

My father looked at the screen.

Then his expression became serious.

“Vivienne...”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He turned the screen toward me.

And my heart stopped.

Because the document title read:

Operation: Remove Vivienne Whitmore.

The ballroom went silent.

This was no longer a family argument.

It was a plan.

A plan created to erase me from their lives.

And now...

May you like

I was finally going to see how far they were willing to go.

To be continued...
