Chapter 6 — The Partner in the Lie

Chapter 6 — The Partner in the Lie
The words hung in the air.
“There were two people involved.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody even whispered.
My father’s statement had changed everything.
Amanda was no longer the only person under suspicion.

Chloe slowly turned toward him.
“What are you saying?”
My father looked at the security footage displayed on the large screen behind the stage.
“I’m saying Amanda did not act alone.”
Amanda’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, please.”
Chloe looked at her cousin.
“Amanda?”
For the first time, there was fear in Chloe’s eyes.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
My father motioned toward the screen.
“Watch carefully.”
The footage rewound.
Everyone watched the ballroom from above.
The timestamp appeared.
8:35 p.m.
The reception was beginning.
Guests were laughing.
Servers were walking around with champagne.
The bride and groom were greeting family members.
Then the camera focused on Chloe.
She was standing near the entrance with Amanda.
At first, it looked like a normal conversation.
Until the footage zoomed closer.
The sound was faint, but the hotel’s security system had captured the audio.
Chloe leaned toward Amanda.
“Remember what we talked about.”
Amanda looked nervous.
“I don’t know if I can do this.”
Chloe smiled.
“You already agreed.”
The entire ballroom froze.
A wave of shock moved through the guests.
Chloe immediately stepped forward.
“That’s edited.”
My father didn’t even look at her.
“No.”
The footage continued.
Amanda glanced around.
“What if someone sees?”
Chloe laughed.
“Everyone will be looking at Vivienne.”
My stomach tightened.
I already knew where this was going.
The footage continued.
Chloe looked directly at Amanda.
“She’s the easiest person to blame.”
A guest gasped.
Someone covered their mouth.
Dominic stared at Chloe like he was seeing a stranger.
The video kept playing.
Amanda whispered:
“What if she fights back?”
Chloe smiled.
“She never does.”
Those words hurt more than I expected.
Because they were true.
For years, they had studied me.
They knew exactly how I reacted.
They knew I avoided conflict.
They knew I valued peace.
And they used that against me.
The video continued.
Chloe handed something small to Amanda.
The room became silent.
The security footage zoomed in.
It was a small jewelry box.
The same box that had held the diamond ring.
Amanda covered her face.
“It wasn’t supposed to go this far.”
Chloe turned toward her.
“Stop talking.”
But it was too late.
Everyone had seen.
Everyone had heard.
The truth was no longer something they could manipulate.
My father turned off the footage.
Then he looked at Chloe.
“Do you still want to accuse my daughter?”
Chloe said nothing.
For once, she had no speech prepared.
No insult.
No excuse.
Nothing.
Eleanor suddenly stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed toward Amanda.
“She acted alone.”
Amanda looked at her in disbelief.
“Aunt Eleanor…”
But Eleanor continued.
“My daughter had nothing to do with this.”
My father stared at her.
“That is an interesting statement.”
“What?”
“You knew exactly who to blame before anyone asked.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
A small mistake.
But enough.
My father looked at the security officer.
“Bring up the hotel access records.”
The officer nodded.
A few seconds later, another document appeared.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
The officer looked serious.
“The jewelry box was removed from the private bridal suite at 8:21 p.m.”
Everyone looked at Chloe.
The officer continued.
“The access code used belonged to the bride.”
The room exploded.
Chloe stepped backward.
“That’s impossible.”
The officer shook his head.
“The system records every entry.”
My father looked at her.
“You opened the room.”
“No.”
“You gave Amanda the ring.”
“No!”
“You planned the accusation.”
Chloe’s voice cracked.
“Stop!”
The scream echoed through the ballroom.
For a moment, she looked less like a wealthy bride and more like someone trapped by her own lies.
I watched her carefully.
A part of me wanted to feel satisfaction.
But strangely...
I didn’t.
Because I realized something.
Chloe had spent years trying to make me feel worthless.
She wanted everyone to see me as someone who had nothing.
But the truth was...
She was the one who had lost everything.
Her reputation.
Her carefully created image.
The respect of everyone in that room.
And most importantly...
The illusion that she was untouchable.
My father walked back toward me.
“Vivienne.”
I looked at him.
“Are you ready to leave?”
I glanced around the ballroom one more time.
At Chloe.
At Eleanor.
At Dominic.
Three people who had watched me suffer.
Three people who had chosen to believe the worst about me.
Then I looked at my husband.
Dominic’s eyes met mine.
And for the first time...
I saw regret.
Real regret.
But regret could not erase what happened.
I quietly said,
“I’m not leaving yet.”
My father studied me.
“What else do you need?”
I took a slow breath.
“I need Dominic to hear the truth.”
The room went silent.
Because everyone knew...
The biggest betrayal of the night was not the stolen ring.
May you like
It was the man who allowed it to happen.
To be continued...
