Chapter 12 — The Husband’s Final Secret

Chapter 12 — The Husband’s Final Secret
The ballroom disappeared around me.
At least, that was how it felt.
The voices.
The whispers.
The shocked reactions from the guests.
Everything became distant.
All I could hear was the recording.

Dominic’s voice.
The man I married.
The man who promised to protect me.
The man who held my hand on our wedding day and swore he would never let anyone hurt me.
“I understand.”
“Just make sure Vivienne never finds out.”
The words repeated in my mind.
Over and over.
I slowly turned toward him.
Dominic looked like he had lost all color from his face.
“Vivienne…”
I raised my hand.
Not angrily.
Not dramatically.
Just enough to stop him.
Because I wasn’t ready to hear another explanation.
Not yet.
The entire room watched us.
For once, nobody was looking at me with suspicion.
They were looking at me with sympathy.
And somehow, that felt worse.
I didn’t want their pity.
I wanted the truth.
“Tell me,” I whispered.
Dominic swallowed.
“Tell me what that was.”
He looked at the screen.
Then back at me.
“I can explain.”
Those words.
Those same words.
They had become the beginning of every painful conversation.
I looked at him.
“Then explain.”
My father stood beside me.
Silent.
But I knew he was watching every reaction.
Dominic took a deep breath.
“I went to see Chloe the night before the wedding.”
“Why?”
He hesitated.
And that hesitation hurt.
“Because I knew something was wrong.”
I stared at him.
“You knew?”
He nodded slowly.
“I knew Chloe had been acting strangely.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
His eyes lowered.
“Because…”
He stopped.
That one word told me everything.
Because.
There was always a reason.
Always an excuse.
Always something more important than honesty.
“Because what, Dominic?”
He looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.”
The ballroom became silent.
“Afraid of what?”
He looked around.
“At losing everything.”
My heart tightened.
There it was.
The truth.
Not love.
Not protection.
Fear.
Dominic continued.
“When the company started struggling, I panicked.”
He looked ashamed.
“I knew my family was desperate.”
I listened quietly.
“I knew Chloe was looking for ways to solve the problem.”
“And you let her?”
“No.”
His answer came quickly.
But then he paused.
“I thought I could control it.”
I almost laughed.
“Control what?”
He looked at the floor.
“The situation.”
The same mistake people like him always made.
They thought ignoring a problem was the same as handling it.
“You knew Chloe was planning something.”
“Yes.”
The answer was barely audible.
My chest felt heavy.
“How much did you know?”
Dominic closed his eyes.
“I knew she wanted to create a scene.”
A cold silence filled the room.
“You knew she wanted to accuse someone?”
“Yes.”
My father’s expression hardened.
“And you allowed it?”
Dominic looked at him.
“No.”
“Then why did you stay silent tonight?”
Dominic had no answer.
Because everyone knew.
He had a choice.
And he made the wrong one.
I looked at him.
“Did you know she would accuse me?”
He didn’t respond.
That was enough.
My eyes burned.
But I refused to cry.
Not in front of them.
Not again.
Dominic finally spoke.
“I didn’t know she would go that far.”
I nodded slowly.
“So you knew enough to be worried.”
“Yes.”
“But not enough to warn me.”
His voice broke.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at him.
“I know.”
Those two words surprised him.
“You know?”
“Yes.”
I took a breath.
“I believe you’re sorry.”
His eyes filled with hope for a second.
Then I continued.
“But being sorry doesn’t change what happened.”
The hope disappeared.
My father stepped forward.
“Dominic, there is still one question.”
Dominic looked at him.
“What?”
My father pointed toward the screen.
“The recording showed you talking to Chloe.”
“Yes.”
“You said, ‘Make sure Vivienne never finds out.’”
Dominic nodded.
My father’s voice became colder.
“What exactly did you not want my daughter to find out?”
The entire room waited.
Dominic looked trapped.
Because this was the secret he had been protecting.
Not Chloe.
Not his family.
Himself.
Finally, he spoke.
“I knew about the inheritance.”
I looked at him.
“That’s not new.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“That’s not the secret.”
My father narrowed his eyes.
“Then what is?”
Dominic’s hands trembled.
“The reason I married Vivienne.”
The words struck the room like a shockwave.
I felt my entire body go still.
“What?”
Dominic immediately shook his head.
“Please, listen to me.”
But I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly, every memory felt different.
Every promise.
Every moment.
Every “I love you.”
My father’s voice became dangerously calm.
“Choose your next words carefully.”
Dominic looked at me.
And I saw tears in his eyes.
“I did love you.”
A pause.
“But when I first met you…”
He looked down.
“I knew who your father was.”
The ballroom went silent.
“And I knew what that meant.”
My heart sank.
The man I loved had just confirmed the one thing I never wanted to believe.
That my name.
My family.
My money.
Had always been part of the equation.
Dominic whispered:
“But I swear…”
“I fell in love with you after that.”
I stared at him.
Trying to separate the truth from the damage.
But before I could answer...
The security officer suddenly rushed back into the room.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
My father turned.
“What now?”
The officer looked nervous.
“We found another file.”
My father frowned.
“What kind of file?”
The officer looked directly at me.
“A document showing Dominic was preparing something before the wedding.”
My stomach dropped.
“What kind of document?”
The officer hesitated.
Then said:
“Divorce papers.”
The ballroom went completely silent.
Because now the question was no longer whether Dominic had betrayed me.
The question was:
May you like
How long had he been planning to leave?
To be continued...
