Chapter 9 - The Matriarch's Key.

Eleanor waited until Reese closed the hospital room door.

Then she removed a small brass key from her purse.

Elena recognized it immediately.

It belonged to an old safe in the Howard estate office.

"Thomas gave this to me three days ago."

Elena stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell the police?"

Eleanor looked toward Reese.

"Because I didn't know which police officer to trust."

Reese's expression remained neutral.

"And now?"

"Now my daughter-in-law nearly lost her child."

Eleanor sat beside the bed.

For the first time, age showed in her face.

"I knew Adrian was having an affair."

Elena said nothing.

"I did not know he was stealing from the foundation."

"I did not know he was threatening you."

Elena's voice was quiet.

"You knew enough to protect Vanessa on the staircase."

Eleanor flinched.

"I thought she was frightened."

"You thought I was dangerous."

The older woman lowered her eyes.

"Adrian told me you were unstable."

There it was.

Another story built before the crime.

He had spent months preparing his mother to distrust Elena.

Eleanor continued.

"Thomas came to me because he discovered Adrian was using my digital signature."

"He said someone would try to make him disappear if the audit began."

Reese held out his hand.

"Where did Thomas go?"

Eleanor placed the brass key in his palm.

"He told me if anything happened, open the old safe."

"The safe is not at the mansion anymore."

Elena frowned.

"Where is it?"

"My husband's old office beneath the Howard theater downtown."

Reese stood.

"We go now."

Eleanor shook her head.

"There's more."

She looked at Elena.

"Thomas said the safe contains a list of everyone involved."

"Including someone in this family I would never forgive."

Elena thought of Adrian.

"Your son?"

Eleanor's eyes filled with something darker than grief.

"He said Adrian was not the name that would hurt me most."

The old theater had been closed for twelve years.

Police entered through a side door while Reese and Eleanor followed.

The office smelled of dust and damp wood.

The safe stood behind a faded portrait of Eleanor's late husband.

The brass key opened the outer lock.

Inside were financial ledgers, flash drives, and a sealed envelope marked ELEANOR.

She opened it with shaking hands.

Only one sheet of paper was inside.

At the top was a list of shell companies.

At the bottom were handwritten initials beside each transfer.

A.H.

V.C.

T.V.

And E.H.

Eleanor stared at her own initials.

"No."

Reese looked at her.

"Did you authorize these?"

"Never."

Then Elena noticed something written beneath the list.

A final sentence in Thomas's handwriting.

THE REAL E.H. IS NOT ELEANOR HOWARD.

Eleanor whispered the only other Howard name with those initials.

"Ethan."

Adrian's younger brother had supposedly died eight years ago.

Eleanor's hands shook so badly that Elena took the paper from her.

For decades, Eleanor had treated the Howard name like armor.

Now she looked as though that armor had turned inward.

She admitted Ethan's empty funeral had nearly destroyed her marriage.

Her late husband had forbidden anyone from investigating privately after the Coast Guard closed the search.

At the time, Eleanor thought grief made him cruel.

Now she wondered whether he had known Ethan was alive.
