Chapter 2 - The First Lie.

Adrian's question hung over the foyer longer than Vanessa's scream had.
Eleanor turned toward her son with a sharp expression.
"Your wife is pregnant and unconscious."
"Call an ambulance before you start worrying about witnesses."
Adrian pulled out his phone but did not dial immediately.
His eyes traveled toward the corners of the ceiling.
Elena noticed the movement through a narrow opening between her lashes.
He was looking for cameras.
That frightened her more than the fall.
She had told nobody about the new security system except Reese and the private technician who installed it.
Vanessa pressed herself against Adrian's chest.
"I swear she rushed me."
"She said she would ruin us."
Adrian wrapped one arm around her without thinking.
Eleanor saw it.
The older woman's face hardened.
"Why are you holding her like that?"
Adrian immediately released Vanessa.
"She's in shock."
"Your wife is on the floor."
The words landed with quiet disgust.
At last, Adrian called emergency services.
He described Elena as having "fallen during an argument," carefully avoiding Vanessa's name.
Elena memorized every word.
Two house employees appeared from the service hallway.
Maria, the longtime housekeeper, gasped when she saw Elena.
"Mrs. Howard."
Adrian blocked her path.
"Don't move her."
Maria stared at him as if she barely recognized the man she had worked for since he was a teenager.
"I was going to check whether she was breathing."
Vanessa began crying louder.
"This is my fault."
"I should have left when she threatened me."
Elena heard the performance sharpening with every sentence.
Vanessa was creating a story before police arrived.
That meant she had done this before.
Maybe not a staircase.
Maybe not Elena.
But she knew how to build innocence quickly.
Sirens finally approached through the gated drive.
Adrian crouched beside Elena for the first time.
His hand hovered near her shoulder without touching her.
"Elena?"
She remained still.
He leaned closer.
His voice changed.
"If you can hear me, don't make this worse than it is."
The threat was almost tender.
Elena felt something inside her finally break cleanly instead of painfully.
Whatever remained of her marriage ended in that whisper.
Paramedics rushed through the front doors moments later.
They stabilized Elena's neck, checked her breathing, and asked her to open her eyes.
This time she did.
"My baby."
One paramedic nodded reassuringly.
"We're taking care of both of you."
As they lifted her onto the stretcher, Vanessa stepped closer.
"Elena, I'm so sorry."
Elena turned her head slowly.
For the first time since the fall, their eyes met.
Vanessa expected fear.
Instead, Elena gave her a calm look that made the blonde woman's mouth stop moving.
Outside, two unmarked cars rolled through the mansion gates.
Adrian saw them through the open doors.
His face went pale.
Detective Marcus Reese stepped from the first car.
He did not look at Elena.
He looked directly at the small black camera hidden above the staircase.
Then he looked at Adrian.
And Adrian understood that someone had already been watching.
As the stretcher crossed the threshold, Elena saw Maria standing alone near the service hall.
The housekeeper touched two fingers to her own wrist, then pointed subtly toward the library.
It was an old signal from childhood games in the mansion, meaning something had been hidden.
Elena did not know whether Maria had found evidence or danger.
May you like
She only knew the woman had chosen not to say it in front of Adrian.
That meant the mansion held another secret before Reese even entered it.
