Chapter 16 - The Glass House.

The lakeside house looked transparent from the outside and secretive from within.

Its walls reflected the black water and hid anyone standing behind the interior lights.

Reese approached with a tactical team through the woods.

Elena remained in a command vehicle half a mile away despite his objections.

She refused to be sent somewhere else while every answer converged on this place.

Thermal imaging showed two people inside.

One moved through the kitchen.

The other remained seated in the living room.

Police entered through three doors at once.

They found Adrian tied to a chair.

Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.

Ethan was gone.

A timer on the kitchen counter counted down from four minutes.

Officers immediately evacuated the building.

The timer reached zero.

Nothing exploded.

Instead, every television inside the house turned on simultaneously.

A prerecorded video began playing.

Ethan appeared on screen.

He looked older than the family photographs, but his smile was unmistakably Howard.

"Hello, Mother."

Eleanor watched from Reese's command vehicle beside Elena.

Her face collapsed.

Ethan continued.

"If you're seeing this, Adrian failed again."

He described eight years of resentment in a voice almost conversational.

He accused Adrian of stealing their father's affection, inheritance, and future.

Then he laughed.

"So I let him think we were partners."

Adrian watched from an ambulance outside the house.

His expression changed as Ethan explained the truth.

The offshore accounts were not equally controlled.

Ethan had redirected most of the stolen money months earlier.

Adrian had been stealing for a partner who was stealing from him.

Ethan leaned closer to the camera.

"And Vanessa?"

"She was useful until she became sentimental."

Elena felt Eleanor's hand tighten around hers.

The recording continued.

"Elena was the problem because she was the only person in this family who actually read the documents."

"You should have listened to her."

The screen went black.

Then one final image appeared.

A live video feed.

Vanessa sat in a chair in an unknown room.

Her hands were bound.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Elena."

Her voice cracked.

"I'm sorry."

A clock behind her showed the current time.

This was happening now.

Text appeared beneath the image.

BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST DOCUMENTS TO HOWARD THEATER.

COME WITHOUT POLICE.

OR SHE DISAPPEARS LIKE I DID.

Reese swore.

"It's a trap."

Elena stared at Vanessa's terrified face.

"Yes."

Reese looked at her.

"You're not going."

Elena's expression became calm.

"He thinks the trust documents are what I protected."

"They aren't."

"What are you protecting?"

Elena looked toward the dark outline of the glass house.

"The fact that I copied them months ago."

For the first time, Ethan wanted something Elena could afford to lose.

That gave her an advantage.

But only if Vanessa stayed alive long enough for Elena to use it.

Adrian begged officers at the glass house not to leave him alone.

The arrogance that once filled every room had vanished.

He kept asking whether Ethan had been captured and whether Vanessa was alive.

When nobody answered, he asked for Elena.

She refused the call.

For years, Adrian had decided when conversations began and ended.

This time Elena chose silence.

It was the first punishment he seemed to understand without a lawyer explaining it.
