Chapter 15 - Disposable.

Thomas asked to speak with Elena directly.
Reese resisted at first.
Then Thomas insisted that only she would understand what he had found.
They met through a secure video connection.
Thomas looked older than Elena remembered.
Bruises darkened one side of his face.
His voice barely carried through the speaker.
"I'm sorry."
Elena did not comfort him.
"Tell me everything."
Thomas nodded.
He admitted processing Adrian's illegal transfers for nearly a year.
At first, he believed the money funded undisclosed acquisitions.
When he discovered Ethan was alive, he realized the accounts were criminal.
He began copying records.
Then he overheard Adrian and Ethan arguing about Vanessa.
"Ethan wanted her gone after the staircase."
Elena leaned closer.
"Gone how?"
Thomas closed his eyes briefly.
"Permanently."
Vanessa was supposed to push Elena, claim self-defense, and leave the mansion before police arrived.
A driver would take her to the private airfield.
She believed she was escaping with money and a new identity.
Instead, Ethan planned to make her disappearance look like flight from guilt.
"Why?"
"Because she knew too much."
"And because Adrian was getting attached to her."
Elena almost laughed at the ugliness of it.
Even Vanessa, who had helped destroy her marriage, had been marked for disposal.
Thomas continued.
"Vanessa figured it out."
"That's why she took my bank card."
"She needed cash they couldn't trace through her own accounts."
"Did she hurt you?"
Thomas hesitated.
"She helped lock me in the storage unit."
"But she left water."
"Ethan wanted me dead."
Elena absorbed the contradiction.
Vanessa was guilty.
Vanessa was also hunted.
Reese leaned into view.
"Where would she go?"
Thomas whispered an address.
A motel two towns away.
Vanessa once used it when she and Ethan worked together years earlier.
Police reached the motel after sunset.
Room 18 was empty.
The bathroom mirror had been wiped clean.
The bed was untouched.
On the table sat a cheap burner phone.
It rang while Reese stood beside it.
He answered.
Vanessa spoke immediately.
"Put Elena on."
Reese looked at the recording equipment.
"You're speaking to Detective Reese."
"Then listen carefully."
Vanessa's voice shook.
"Ethan is going to kill Adrian."
Reese glanced toward Elena on the secure line.
"Why should we believe you?"
"Because Adrian has the only key to the offshore vault."
"Ethan doesn't need him anymore after tonight."
Elena interrupted.
"Vanessa, where are you?"
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered.
"Somewhere your husband can't find me."
Elena's voice stayed cold.
"You pushed me down a staircase."
Vanessa began crying quietly.
"I know."
"And if you want to live long enough to answer for that, tell us where Ethan is taking him."
Another pause.
"The glass house."
Elena felt a chill.
The Howard family owned a modern lakeside retreat built almost entirely of glass.
No neighbors.
No public road.
Vanessa's final words came in a whisper.
"Hurry."
Then the line went dead.
Thomas also revealed that Vanessa had once tried to leave the scheme before meeting Adrian publicly.
Ethan responded by showing her forged documents that could send her to prison for years.
From that point forward, she became both participant and hostage.
Elena listened without softening.
Being trapped explained Vanessa's fear.
It did not erase the shove.

That distinction mattered to Elena.
Understanding someone's reasons was not the same as surrendering the right to hold them accountable.
