Chapter 12 - The Hearing.

Adrian arrived at court in a navy suit with Vanessa beside him.

She wore black and no jewelry, dressed carefully to resemble a grieving witness rather than a mistress.

Photographers waited outside the courthouse.

Someone had leaked the hearing to the press.

Elena entered through a private door with Reese's team and her attorney, Grace Mercer.

Grace had represented corporate whistleblowers for twenty years.

She did not waste words.

"Adrian's petition claims you installed illegal surveillance because of paranoid delusions."

Elena almost smiled.

"Convenient."

"Very."

"He also claims you staged the staircase incident to frame Vanessa."

The anger in Elena became strangely calm.

"Then let's show the judge the recording."

Grace shook her head.

"Not yet."

"Reese says the prosecution needs to protect parts of the evidence."

That delay was exactly what Adrian wanted.

Inside the courtroom, his attorney painted Elena as obsessed, jealous, and emotionally unstable during pregnancy.

He described hidden cameras as evidence of paranoia.

He described her secret call to Reese as proof that the investigation existed before any crime occurred.

Then Vanessa testified.

She spoke softly.

She avoided Elena's eyes.

"She told me she would destroy me."

Grace stood for cross-examination.

"Did Mrs. Howard push you?"

"No."

"Strike you?"

"No."

"Threaten you with a weapon?"

"No."

"Then what required physical force?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"She rushed toward me."

Grace waited.

"And you pushed her?"

Adrian's attorney objected.

The judge overruled him.

Vanessa's voice became quieter.

"I put my hands out."

"Did your hands touch her?"

Vanessa looked toward Adrian.

That glance lasted less than a second.

It was enough.

"Yes."

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

Grace did not celebrate.

"Thank you."

"No further questions."

Adrian's petition should have weakened.

Instead, his attorney produced a medical report claiming Elena had been treated for severe anxiety and delusional jealousy six months earlier.

Elena stared at the paper.

"That's false."

Grace whispered.

"I know."

The report carried the letterhead of Elena's actual physician.

It included her date of birth, insurance number, and a forged signature.

The judge ordered an independent evaluation before ruling.

Adrian smiled faintly.

The hearing was postponed forty-eight hours.

Outside, reporters surrounded Vanessa.

She stopped just long enough to speak.

"I hope Elena gets the help she needs."

Elena watched from behind courthouse glass.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Reese appeared.

WE FOUND WHO CREATED THE MEDICAL REPORT.

Elena called him immediately.

"Who?"

Reese's answer made her grip the phone tighter.

"Your doctor."

During a recess, Adrian approached Elena in the courthouse corridor despite Grace's warning.

He stopped just beyond arm's reach.

"You can still end this."

Elena looked at him without expression.

"You mean I can still save you."

His jaw tightened.

"Think about our child."

The hypocrisy almost took her breath away.

"I am."

"That is why I am still standing here."

A bailiff stepped between them before Adrian could answer.

Grace later discovered that Adrian's attorney had requested Elena's medical file before the staircase incident occurred.

The request was dated nine days earlier.

That detail mattered because nobody could claim the forged diagnosis was created in panic after the fall.

Someone had prepared the incompetency strategy in advance.

Elena looked across the courtroom at Adrian and finally understood the scale of his confidence.

He had not expected to defend himself.

He had expected to define her before she could speak.
