Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

The Howard mansion fell into a suffocating silence when Elena's body struck the lower glass landing.

The chandelier above the foyer trembled in the reflection, scattering fractured light across the marble like broken ice.

For one endless second, nobody moved.

Vanessa stood halfway up the staircase with both hands raised, staring down as if she had just witnessed something impossible.

Then her expression changed.

Terror arrived too perfectly.

She stumbled backward and clutched the silver railing with trembling fingers.

"I didn't push her."

Mrs. Eleanor Howard hurried from the drawing room and caught Vanessa before she could collapse.

"What happened?"

Vanessa pointed toward Elena with a shaking hand.

"She came at me."

"She was furious, and I only tried to protect myself."

Elena lay on her side beneath the staircase, one hand curved over the swell of her stomach.

Pain burned across her back and shoulder with every shallow breath.

She wanted to cry out.

She wanted to curl around the baby and demand an ambulance.

Instead, she forced herself to remain still.

The fall had not been part of the plan.

Vanessa's violence had been expected.

The exact moment of it had not.

Above her, Eleanor spoke in the hard whisper she used whenever scandal threatened the Howard name.

"Do not say another word until Adrian gets here."

Vanessa nodded quickly.

"She hates me because Adrian loves me."

Elena almost opened her eyes at that lie.

Vanessa was not supposed to know Elena had discovered the affair three weeks earlier.

She was not supposed to know Elena had copied Adrian's hotel receipts, photographed the messages, and sent every file to Detective Marcus Reese.

Most importantly, Vanessa was not supposed to know about the cameras.

Elena slowly moved two fingers beneath the loose edge of her gray sweater.

Her black smartphone was still in the hidden inner pocket she had sewn herself.

The screen responded beneath her thumb.

One tap opened the emergency shortcut.

A second tap called Reese.

She waited until Eleanor and Vanessa moved several feet away.

Then Elena lifted the phone beneath her hair and spoke so softly that even she could barely hear herself.

"Detective Reese."

His answer came immediately.

"Elena?"

She swallowed through the pain.

"It happened."

There was no hesitation on the other end.

"Are you safe?"

Elena looked toward Vanessa's blurred silhouette above her.

"Not yet."

"Send your team now."

She ended the call before Reese could ask another question.

Then she slipped the phone beneath her sweater and closed her eyes again.

Footsteps thundered through the corridor.

Adrian Howard entered the foyer and stopped dead when he saw his pregnant wife on the floor.

For a heartbeat, genuine fear crossed his face.

Then Vanessa ran to him.

"Adrian, she attacked me."

His fear vanished behind calculation.

He looked at Elena.

He looked at his mother.

Then he asked the question that told Elena everything she needed to know.

"Did anyone see it?"

Maria dropped to her knees several feet from Elena and began praying under her breath.

Eleanor ordered the servants away, but Maria refused to leave until the paramedics arrived.

Vanessa watched her with irritation hidden beneath tears.

That tiny crack in the performance told Elena something important.

Vanessa wanted witnesses, but only witnesses she could control.

Adrian's question about who had seen the fall confirmed the same fear.
