Chapter 11 - Behind the Glass.

Elena turned toward the window so fast that pain shot through her ribs.

The courtyard below was empty.

Reese ordered officers to search every floor and exterior walkway.

They found no sign of Ethan.

The photograph had been taken less than a minute earlier.

That meant he was close.

Or someone wanted her to believe he was.

Thomas was moved to a secure ward under an assumed name.

Eleanor remained beside Elena until dawn.

Neither woman slept.

At sunrise, Eleanor finally spoke.

"Ethan always believed Adrian stole his place in the family."

Elena looked at her.

"Did he?"

Eleanor took a long breath.

"Their father favored Adrian."

"Ethan was impulsive and angry."

"But he was not stupid."

She stared at the city beyond the hospital glass.

"Eight years ago, Ethan accused Adrian of moving company money into private accounts."

"My husband refused to believe him."

"Then Ethan vanished."

Elena felt the implication settle heavily.

"You thought Adrian killed him?"

Eleanor's answer came slowly.

"For one night, yes."

"Then Adrian showed us letters proving Ethan planned to disappear."

Reese arrived with a forensic report that destroyed that explanation.

The letters were printed from a computer in Adrian's office two days after Ethan vanished.

Metadata had survived in an archived backup.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"My son lied to me for eight years."

Reese placed another file on the table.

"Ethan may have helped him."

Elena frowned.

"Why fake your death, then work with the brother you hate?"

"Money."

"Revenge."

"Control."

Reese opened a diagram of the shell companies.

Adrian transferred foundation funds.

Ethan moved the money internationally.

Vanessa received payments through a consulting company.

Thomas had processed the transfers until he realized the scale of the theft.

"So Vanessa wasn't just Adrian's mistress."

"No."

"She was part of the operation before she ever entered your marriage."

Elena remembered Vanessa's rehearsed lines.

Every insult suddenly sounded scripted by a larger plan.

"Why me?"

Reese pointed to a document.

It was Elena's prenuptial agreement.

A clause she had barely noticed years earlier granted her temporary voting authority over Adrian's shares if he became subject to a criminal investigation involving financial misconduct.

Elena stared at the page.

"They couldn't risk me controlling the shares."

"Exactly."

"If you divorced Adrian quietly, the clause disappeared."

"If you were discredited as unstable, the board could challenge your authority."

"And if I died?"

Nobody answered.

The baby moved beneath Elena's hand.

She felt sudden, furious clarity.

This was no longer about surviving a marriage.

It was about stopping a machine that had already swallowed millions and nearly swallowed her child.

Reese's phone buzzed.

He read the alert.

"Adrian just filed an emergency petition."

"For what?"

Reese looked at her with disbelief.

"He wants a judge to declare you mentally incompetent."

The hearing was scheduled for that afternoon.

Grace joined them by video and warned Elena that the incompetency petition was not merely personal humiliation.

If Adrian won temporary control, he could instruct doctors, access financial records, and challenge Elena's decisions concerning the baby.

Elena's face went cold.

Adrian had failed to silence her physically, so he was trying to silence her legally.

Reese told her criminal evidence could help, but a family judge would still demand independent proof.

Elena answered that she would give the judge more proof than Adrian expected.
