Chapter 10 - The Dead Brother.

Ethan Howard's death had been one of the family's most carefully guarded tragedies.
He disappeared during a sailing trip off the coast of Maine.
His boat was found drifting two days later.
His body was never recovered.
Eleanor had buried an empty coffin.
Adrian inherited Ethan's voting shares in the family companies six months afterward.
Now Thomas's note suggested Ethan had never truly left.
Reese opened every flash drive from the theater safe under forensic supervision.
Most contained accounting files.
One contained photographs.
The first showed a bearded man entering a private clinic in Montreal eighteen months earlier.
The second showed the same man beside Vanessa outside a restaurant.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"That's Ethan."
Elena felt the story rearranging itself again.
"Vanessa knew him?"
Reese enlarged the photograph.
Vanessa was smiling.
Not romantically.
Comfortably.
Like someone greeting an old partner.
A timestamp placed the meeting six months before Vanessa claimed to have met Adrian.
Another image showed Ethan inside a bank lobby with Thomas.
The final image was taken only four weeks earlier.
Ethan stood outside the Howard mansion after midnight.
"How did nobody see him?"
Eleanor whispered.
Elena remembered the service gate used by caterers and groundskeepers.
Adrian had recently ordered its camera removed because it was "malfunctioning."
Reese's phone rang.
He listened without speaking.
Then his face hardened.
"We found Thomas."
Elena stood too quickly and winced.
"Alive?"
Reese nodded.
"Barely."
Thomas had been discovered inside a storage unit near the river.
He was dehydrated, bruised, and sedated.
His wrists carried deep restraint marks.
At the hospital, officers guarded his room.
When Thomas regained consciousness, Reese was allowed five minutes.
Elena waited outside with Eleanor.
Through the narrow window, she saw Thomas shake his head repeatedly.
Then he reached weakly for a pen.
Reese emerged holding a folded sheet of paper.
"He can't speak clearly yet."
"What did he write?"
Reese showed them.
Three words filled the page.
ETHAN IS HOME.
Eleanor began crying silently.
Elena stared through the glass at Thomas.
His eyes suddenly widened.
He looked beyond them toward the end of the hallway.
A man in hospital scrubs pushed a supply cart through a door.
Thomas started tearing at his IV.
Reese turned.
The man abandoned the cart and ran.
Two officers chased him down the stairwell.
They lost him in the parking garage.
But the abandoned cart contained a syringe.
The lab later identified a powerful sedative.
Someone had come to finish what they started.
And before the hospital could lock down every entrance, Elena received a text from an unknown number.
WELCOME TO THE FAMILY SECRET.
A photograph followed.
It showed Ethan Howard standing outside her hospital window.
The clinic in Montreal confirmed Ethan had used a false identity and paid cash for reconstructive surgery after his disappearance.
That explained why recent facial-recognition searches had failed.
Thomas had identified him through an old scar near his left ear and the way he signed documents.
Eleanor remembered the scar immediately.
Ethan received it falling from a horse at age fourteen.

For the first time, she stopped hoping the photographs were a mistake.
Her missing son had returned, and he had returned as part of the conspiracy.
