Chapter 13 - The Doctor's Price.

Dr. Samuel Kline had treated Elena for seven years.

He knew her medical history, her pregnancy, and the exact fears she had expressed after receiving anonymous threats.

Now he sat in an interview room insisting the false report was a clerical mistake.

Reese did not believe him.

Neither did Elena.

Bank records showed a two-hundred-thousand-dollar payment to Kline's private consulting company three weeks earlier.

The transfer originated from a shell company connected to Ethan Howard.

Kline finally asked for an attorney.

Before questioning stopped, he said one sentence.

"You have no idea what they threatened to take from me."

The line spread through Elena's mind all afternoon.

Money had bought some people.

Fear had bought others.

Adrian and Ethan understood both currencies.

Grace filed an emergency motion to exclude Kline's report.

The judge agreed to hear evidence the next morning.

That night, Elena was discharged from the hospital under strict instructions to rest.

She refused to return to the mansion.

Reese placed her in a secure apartment owned by the district attorney's office.

Eleanor came with her.

The two women sat across from each other at a small kitchen table, surrounded by plain walls and borrowed furniture.

For the first time, the Howard name offered them nothing.

Eleanor spoke quietly.

"I owe you an apology."

Elena looked at her.

"You owe me the truth."

Eleanor nodded.

"There is one more family trust."

She explained that her late husband created a private inheritance fund for future grandchildren.

If Elena's child was born while she remained legally married to Adrian, the baby would receive a controlling interest worth hundreds of millions.

Elena felt sick.

"And if I divorced before the birth?"

"The trust could be challenged."

"If I was declared incompetent?"

"Adrian could control the child's interest."

The entire plan snapped into focus.

Vanessa's fake pregnancy had been more than emotional cruelty.

It gave Adrian a public replacement heir while he tried to seize control of Elena's real child's inheritance.

Eleanor covered her face.

"I told Adrian about the trust when you became pregnant."

"I thought he would be happy."

Elena's anger sharpened.

"He was."

"Just not for the reason you thought."

A loud knock interrupted them.

Reese entered with two officers and a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a silver keycard.

"We found this in Dr. Kline's office."

Eleanor recognized the logo.

Howard Private Aviation.

Reese continued.

"A company jet is scheduled to leave at 5:30 tomorrow morning."

"Passenger manifest?"

"Empty."

"Destination?"

"The Cayman Islands."

Elena looked at the clock.

It was already after midnight.

"Adrian's leaving."

Reese shook his head.

"Maybe."

"But someone just entered the airport hangar using this keycard's duplicate."

Security footage appeared on his tablet.

The person walking toward the jet was Vanessa.

And beside her was a man with a beard.

Ethan Howard.

Eleanor admitted the trust documents had been kept from Elena because the family lawyers considered the clause too complicated to discuss during pregnancy.

Elena gave a humorless laugh.

Men had hidden a fortune behind the excuse of protecting her from stress.

Then those same men called her unstable when she discovered what they were doing.

Grace later confirmed the trust was valid and far harder to break than Adrian believed.

That meant the attacks were not only cruel.

They had been based on a legal misunderstanding that turned desperation into recklessness.
