Chapter 19 - Brothers.

Adrian had disappeared from protective custody twenty minutes before the theater blackout.
A fake medical emergency drew the officer guarding him away from the room.
Security footage showed Adrian leaving through a service exit in stolen scrubs.
Nobody knew whether Ethan had rescued him or Adrian had escaped to join him.
The answer arrived at dawn.
A video call appeared on Elena's phone from Adrian's number.
Reese traced it while Elena answered.
Adrian's face filled the screen.
Wind whipped across his hair.
Dark water moved behind him.
"Elena."
His voice sounded exhausted.
"Where are you?"
He laughed bitterly.
"Does it matter?"
"To the police, yes."
"I didn't call the police."
"You called me."
His expression changed.
"Ethan took everything."
Elena felt no sympathy.
"You helped him steal it."
"You don't understand."
"I understand you discussed whether my baby surviving a fall would be convenient."
Adrian's face went still.
He had not known she possessed that recording.
"Thomas gave you the video."
"Yes."
"Then listen to me."
Adrian lowered his voice.
"Ethan plans to disappear before sunrise."
"He has the offshore access device with him."
"If he reaches international waters, you'll never recover the money."
Elena almost laughed.
"You still think I care about recovering your stolen money more than stopping you."
A shadow moved behind Adrian.
Ethan appeared.
He placed one hand on his brother's shoulder.
"She always was smarter than you."
Adrian looked terrified.
Ethan smiled toward the camera.
"Hello again, Elena."
"You lost the theater."
"No."
"I learned something."
"Vanessa chose you."
Elena glanced across the room.
Vanessa sat beside an officer, wrapped in a blanket.
She could hear every word.
Ethan continued.
"That makes her dangerous."
Vanessa stood.
"I'm already dangerous to you."
Ethan's smile faded when he heard her voice.
"You should have kept running."
"I did that for years."
"I'm done."
Vanessa looked at Elena.
Then she spoke directly into the phone.
"The access device isn't on the boat."
Ethan's face changed.
Adrian turned sharply toward him.
Vanessa held up a small silver token recovered from the lining of her dress.
"You gave it to me at the motel because you didn't trust Adrian."
Ethan stared at the screen.
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
Reese silently signaled that the call trace was complete.
A Coast Guard team was moving toward the boat.
Elena kept Ethan talking.
"You built your entire plan around everyone betraying everyone else."
"Eventually, you were right."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"You think this is over?"
Elena heard engines through the phone.
Blue lights appeared behind him on the water.
Ethan looked back.
Adrian lunged for the controls.
The phone fell sideways.
The screen filled with sky, shouting, and the sound of a struggle.
Then the call disconnected.
Thirty seconds later, Reese received confirmation.
The boat had stopped.
Both Howard brothers were alive.
Both were in custody.
Elena should have felt relief.
Instead, Vanessa whispered something that turned the room cold again.
"There's still one camera they don't know about."
Coast Guard officers later described the struggle on the boat.
Adrian tried to steer toward shore when he realized Ethan intended to leave him behind as the sole architect of the fraud.
Ethan struck him and reached for a flare gun.
Officers boarded before either brother could regain control.
Their partnership ended exactly as Elena expected.
Not with loyalty.
May you like
Not with sacrifice.
With each brother desperately trying to make the other responsible for the ruin they had created together.
