Chapter 14 - Flight Before Dawn.

Police surrounded the private hangar at 4:50 in the morning.
The jet remained dark.
Vanessa's car was parked outside.
Ethan's face had appeared clearly on security footage entering the building.
Yet when officers moved in, both were gone.
A maintenance door at the rear had been forced open from the inside.
Fresh tire tracks led toward an industrial access road.
Reese swore under his breath when he saw them.
"They knew we were coming."
Elena watched the live update from the secure apartment.
"The leak again."
"Yes."
"How many people knew about the raid?"
"Four."
"You, the prosecutor, and two officers?"
Reese nodded.
Elena thought of Thomas's warning.
The person protecting them had access to the police schedule.
"Maybe the leak isn't a person."
Reese frowned.
"Explain."
"What if they are inside the system?"
"Calendar access."
"Dispatch records."
"Warrant notifications."
Reese went silent.
Within an hour, cyber investigators found unauthorized forwarding rules on a police administrative account.
Every email containing the words Howard, Vanessa, Ethan, or Reese had been copied to an encrypted address.
The account belonged to a clerk who had no idea it was compromised.
The leak was technical, not personal.
For the first time, Reese could move without assuming a colleague was betraying him.
He created a false operation notice claiming police would search a warehouse on the east side at noon.
Then he waited.
At 11:43, a black SUV arrived near the fake target.
The driver stayed inside.
Police boxed it in.
The man behind the wheel was not Ethan.
It was Adrian.
He refused to explain why he was there.
His attorney arrived within twenty minutes.
Vanessa and Ethan remained missing.
During the vehicle search, officers found a laptop in the trunk.
The laptop contained encrypted foundation records.
It also contained a folder labeled ELENA.
Inside were photographs taken over four months.
Elena leaving prenatal appointments.
Elena meeting Grace.
Elena entering Reese's precinct.
Elena speaking with the camera technician.
Someone had tracked every step she took.
Adrian had known about the cameras before the night of the fall.
He simply had not known where the backups were stored.
Then investigators found a final file.
It was a floor plan of the Howard mansion.
Red circles marked every hidden camera location.
One circle had been drawn around camera three.
Beside it were two handwritten words.
BLIND SPOT.
Elena stared at the image.
"There wasn't a blind spot."
Reese looked at her.
"Exactly."
The staircase camera had captured the fall.
But someone thought it had not.
That meant Adrian had planned the confrontation using outdated information.
Elena's last-minute repositioning of camera three had changed everything.
Reese allowed himself the smallest smile.
"Your trap worked better than they knew."
Then his phone rang.
The smile disappeared.
Thomas had regained enough strength to speak.
His first clear statement was only six words.
"Vanessa was never supposed to survive either."
Adrian's arrest near the fake warehouse finally cracked his public image.
News helicopters followed the police convoy downtown.
For years, he had controlled every photograph associated with the Howard name.
Now cameras captured him in handcuffs beside a trunk full of evidence.
Vanessa watched the coverage from somewhere unknown and sent Elena one short message.
HE WILL BLAME ME FOR EVERYTHING.
May you like
Elena did not reply.
She forwarded the message to Reese and waited for Vanessa to decide whether fear was stronger than loyalty.
