Chapter 8 - The Man She Thought She Married.

Anastasia did not cry when she read Melissa's email.
She became very still.
That frightened Callan more.
"You knew?" she asked.
Callan stared at the conference table.
"At first."
The two words landed harder than the slap.
Maya remained beside Anastasia but said nothing.
This answer belonged to them.
Callan spoke slowly.
"My mother asked me to meet you."
"Meet me?"
"She said your family would never sell to Harrington Development because your father hated the way our acquisitions team handled the first offer."
"So you walked into our store."
"Yes."
"You pretended to need a drill bit."
Callan flinched.
"I did need the drill bit."
Anastasia laughed once.
It sounded empty.
"That's your defense?"
"No."
"Did you come back because she told you to?"
"The second time, yes."
"And the third?"
Callan looked at her.
"The third time was me."
Anastasia hated that answer because some part of her believed it.
Love could grow from a lie.
That did not make the lie disappear.
"When did you stop reporting to her?"
Callan hesitated.
Anastasia understood before he answered.
"You never did."
"I told her less."
"That is not what I asked."
"No."
His voice dropped.
"I never completely stopped."
Maya finally spoke.
"Why are you telling her this now?"
Callan reached into his folder.
"Because my mother is trying to make me sign a statement saying Anastasia attacked me without provocation."
"Did she?"
"No."
The room changed.
Maya leaned forward.
"Say that clearly."
Callan swallowed.
"I slapped my wife first."
Anastasia's nails dug into her palm.
"And after you slapped me?"
"I stepped toward you."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"Yes, you do."
Callan looked miserable.
"I was still angry."
"Were you going to hit me again?"
"I don't know."
Anastasia stood.
"Then you still don't understand why I was afraid."
Callan stood too, but Maya immediately raised one hand.
"Sit down."
He did.
Anastasia remained standing.
"What did your mother tell you before lunch?"
Callan looked at his attorney.
The attorney nodded.
"She said Anastasia needed to understand that marriage meant joining the family, not challenging it."
"What did she want me to sign?"
"The property agreement."
"And if I refused?"
Callan's silence answered.
Anastasia leaned toward him.
"If I refused?"
"I was supposed to tell you to leave for the night."
"So the clause in the prenup could be used later."
"I didn't know about that clause."
Maya's eyes narrowed.
"You signed the prenup too."
"I didn't read every schedule."
"That may be the most Harrington sentence I have ever heard," Maya said.
Callan lowered his head.
Then he pushed another document across the table.
It was a text-message export.
A conversation between Callan and Melissa from the morning of the lunch.
Melissa: Do not back down in front of Brooklyn.
Callan: I won't.
Melissa: She responds to firmness.
Callan: She responds to respect.
Melissa: Then teach her the difference.
Anastasia read the final line several times.
"Did you know Brooklyn was going to bump me?"
"No."
"Did you know your mother had spoken to her?"
"No."
"Do you expect me to believe you?"
"No."
The answer surprised her.
Callan's voice broke for the first time.
"I expect you to believe the evidence."
He looked at Maya.
"I'll give a statement."
Maya studied him.
"You realize that statement damages your family and your own position."
"I know."
Anastasia stared at the man she had married.
Part of her wanted his confession to repair something.
It did not.
Truth arriving late was still truth, but it was not innocence.
Callan reached for his cane and stood carefully.
Before leaving, he looked at Anastasia.
"There is one more thing."
She said nothing.
"My mother's house does not have one camera system."
Maya's attention sharpened.
"What do you mean?"
"The visible cameras run through the main security server."
Callan paused.
"My father installed a second system years ago because he didn't trust her."
"Where is it?"
Callan looked toward the closed conference-room door.
"No one knows."
"Your father is dead," Anastasia said.
"Yes."
"Then who has access?"
May you like
Callan's face tightened.
"My sister."
