The Lens Behind the Wall / Chapter 11 / 20

Chapter 11 - Forty-Eight Seconds.

For three days, the missing forty-eight seconds became an obsession.

Maya built a timeline from every surviving angle.

At 12:06:11, Melissa and Brooklyn were alone in the dining room.

At 12:06:18, Callan entered.

At 12:06:24, the backup clip ended normally.

The next surviving clip began at 12:07:12.

By then, Brooklyn was smiling.

Melissa was holding a folder.

Callan was staring at the floor.

Forty-eight seconds.

That was all.

But people could decide a life in less time.

Ruiz asked Callan what happened during the gap.

He claimed he could not remember the exact conversation.

Maya did not accept that.

She requested another meeting.

This time Anastasia refused to attend.

"I don't want to hear him explain himself again."

Maya went alone.

Callan arrived with his attorney.

He looked better physically and worse everywhere else.

Maya placed three still images on the table.

"Your mother has the property agreement."

"Yes."

"Your sister is smiling."

"Yes."

"You look like someone just gave you bad news."

Callan said nothing.

"What did Melissa say?"

"I don't remember the exact words."

"Then give me the meaning."

Callan rubbed his forehead.

"She told me Anastasia had been talking to a lawyer about challenging the prenup."

"Was that true?"

"I don't know."

"Did you ask Anastasia?"

"No."

"What else?"

"She said David Cole had approached another developer about the Mesa parcel."

"That was true."

"Why did that matter to you?"

"It mattered to the company."

"Not to your marriage?"

Callan's eyes dropped.

"At that point, I didn't know where one ended and the other started."

Maya stared at him.

"That may be the first useful thing you've said."

He continued.

"My mother told me if Anastasia walked out with the property still under her sole control, the family would lose a project worth hundreds of millions."

Maya's pen stopped.

"What project?"

"A hotel and retail complex tied to the proposed highway expansion."

"Did Anastasia know?"

"No."

"How much was her parcel worth to the project?"

"Without it, the access road becomes difficult."

"How difficult?"

Callan met her eyes.

"Possibly impossible."

There it was.

The marriage had not begun with love.

It had begun with an access road.

Maya kept her voice steady.

"What did Melissa tell you to do?"

"Get Anastasia to sign."

"And if she refused?"

"Make her leave."

"So the family could later argue she abandoned the marital home?"

"Yes."

"Did you agree?"

Callan did not answer.

Maya leaned closer.

"Did you agree?"

"Yes."

The word barely came out.

Maya closed her notebook.

"Thank you."

Callan looked startled.

"That's it?"

"No."

Maya slid one final photograph across the table.

It showed the frame at 12:07:12.

Brooklyn was holding something behind her back.

"What is that?"

Callan looked.

His face went white.

"I don't know."

"Try."

He stared longer.

"It looks like my father's voice recorder."

Maya's pulse quickened.

"Your father had a recorder?"

"He dictated notes into it."

"Where is it now?"

"I haven't seen it since he died."

Maya enlarged the image.

Brooklyn's fingers were wrapped around a small rectangular object.

Not a phone.

Not a remote.

A recorder.

Callan leaned back.

"If she had that on during the missing forty-eight seconds..."

"There may be audio."

His attorney finally spoke.

"Do not speculate."

But Callan was already somewhere else.

"My father never trusted cloud storage."

Maya watched him.

"What did he use?"

"Memory cards."

That evening, police searched the velvet pouch that had contained the brass key again.

The stitching along one side felt unusually thick.

A technician cut a single loose thread.

Hidden inside the lining was a microSD card.

Ruiz called Maya before anyone played it.

Then Maya called Anastasia.

"We found something."

Anastasia's heart began pounding.

"What?"

May you like

"Forty-eight seconds."

This time, the truth had a voice.
