Chapter 15 - Charles Harrington's Warning.
Charles Harrington appeared on the screen thinner than Anastasia remembered.
She had met him only twice before his death.
He had been formal, observant, and unexpectedly kind to her parents.
In the video, he sat behind the desk that now gathered dust in his study.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you are watching this, then I either lost my nerve or ran out of time."
Maya and Ruiz exchanged a glance.
The recording continued.
Charles described years of conflict with Melissa over the family companies.
He did not accuse her of a single spectacular crime.
He described something more ordinary and more believable.
Pressure.
Favor trading.
Retaliation.
Employees pushed out for refusing questionable instructions.
Vendors rewarded for loyalty.
Relatives pressured to sign agreements without independent counsel.
Security recordings selectively erased whenever they captured behavior Melissa considered damaging.
"I built the secondary camera system because facts kept changing after they entered my wife's hands," Charles said.
Anastasia felt a chill.
Charles then spoke about the Mesa project.
He opposed using personal relationships to acquire the final parcel.
He specifically named David Cole.
"The Cole family rejected our offer."
He paused.
"That answer should have ended the matter."
It had not.
Charles said Melissa believed the parcel was essential to a development project she considered her legacy.
He had learned that she encouraged Callan to meet Anastasia.
He confronted them both.
Callan promised his relationship with Anastasia had become genuine.
Charles believed him.
But he did not believe Melissa would ever stop seeing the marriage as leverage.
"If Callan marries Anastasia," Charles said, "she must be treated as family, not inventory."
Anastasia looked away from the screen.
The words hurt because Callan had once had someone telling him exactly what was right.
He simply had not listened when it mattered.
Charles explained the trust amendment.
After one year of marriage, Anastasia would have limited rights to review distributions tied to Callan's shares.
It was not meant to enrich her.
It was meant to create another set of eyes.
"My family has spent too long confusing privacy with secrecy," Charles said.
Then he leaned closer to the camera.
"If Melissa tries to force Anastasia out before that year is complete, ask why."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Ruiz finally exhaled.
"That is not evidence of the lunch by itself."
Maya nodded.
"But it explains motive."
The archive provided more.
There were emails showing Melissa pressuring company attorneys to draft the post-wedding property agreement.
There were calendar entries for meetings about the Cole parcel.
There was a note from Charles telling Callan, in capital letters, DO NOT MIX YOUR MARRIAGE WITH THE MESA DEAL.
And there were security clips showing Melissa entering Charles's office repeatedly after his death.
One clip was dated the night before the welcome lunch.
She spent twenty-two minutes at his computer.
The next morning, she told Brooklyn exactly how to provoke Anastasia.
The case was no longer a family argument.
It was a documented campaign.
News of the trust leaked before Maya could stop it.
Reporters gathered outside Cole Hardware.
David refused every interview.
Melissa did not.
She appeared outside a charity event wearing cream silk and diamonds.
"My late husband was ill," she told cameras.
"People are twisting private family material to excuse an inexcusable act."
A reporter asked whether she had deleted security footage after police arrived.
Melissa stopped walking.
For the first time publicly, she had no prepared answer.
Then another reporter asked whether she had instructed Brooklyn to provoke Anastasia.
Melissa turned toward her driver.
The questions followed.
That evening, Harrington Group announced Melissa would temporarily step away from all board responsibilities.
Brooklyn issued a statement confirming she had cooperated with investigators.
Callan stayed silent.
Anastasia thought the family had finally begun to collapse under its own lies.
Then Maya received notice of an emergency motion.
Melissa's lawyers wanted the hidden recordings excluded from Anastasia's criminal case.
If they succeeded, the jury might never hear Charles's warning, Brooklyn's confession, or the forty-eight seconds that proved the lunch was planned.
