Chapter 4 - The Bride They Needed to Break.

Anastasia returned to her parents' house in Mesa under a court order forbidding contact with Callan.
Her wedding dress still hung inside a garment bag in the guest room.
Renee had not moved it.
Neither had Anastasia.
The white fabric felt like evidence from another person's life.
Four days earlier, she had worn it while promising Callan that she would choose him in every season.
Now his attorney was describing her as a threat.
Maya arrived that evening with two boxes of documents.
"We need motive," she said.
"For Brooklyn?"
"For all of them."
Anastasia sat at the kitchen table where she had done homework as a teenager.
"My mother-in-law hated me because I wasn't rich."
"People are cruel for class reasons every day."
Maya opened the first box.
"But staging an incident is different."
David brought coffee.
"What are you looking for?"
"Anything that explains why they needed Anastasia humiliated, removed, or discredited."
The answer arrived from an unexpected place.
Anastasia's phone had been held as evidence for two days.
When it was returned, she noticed six missed calls from a number she did not recognize.
The seventh call came while Maya was still at the house.
Anastasia answered on speaker.
"Hello?"
A woman whispered.
"My name is June Mercer."
Maya immediately reached for a pen.
"Who are you?"
"I worked for Melissa Harrington for eleven years."
Anastasia remembered a quiet woman in a gray uniform carrying trays at the wedding.
"What do you want?"
"To tell you I'm sorry."
Silence filled the kitchen.
June's breathing trembled through the speaker.
"I saw Brooklyn take your bracelet."
Anastasia sat straighter.
"You saw her?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because Mrs. Harrington told me not to."
Maya leaned toward the phone.
"June, this is Maya Torres, Anastasia's attorney."
The woman went silent.
Maya continued carefully.
"Did Melissa know Brooklyn took the bracelet?"
"Yes."
"Did she tell Brooklyn to take it?"
Another pause.
"I don't know."
Anastasia's hand tightened around the phone.
"What else did you see?"
June inhaled.
"The morning of the lunch, I heard Mrs. Harrington arguing with Mr. Callan in the study."
"About me?"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
June lowered her voice.
"She said, 'If you cannot control your wife now, you never will.'"
Anastasia closed her eyes.
Callan had chosen his family before.
But hearing the words made the betrayal feel newly deliberate.
June continued.
"Then she told him today had to settle it."
Maya's pen stopped.
"Settle what?"
"I don't know."
"Did you hear anything else?"
"One sentence."
June sounded terrified now.
"She said, 'By tonight, she either understands her place or she is gone.'"
Maya asked June to meet in person.
June refused.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because people who cross Melissa Harrington lose things."
"What things?"
"Jobs."
June swallowed audibly.
"Homes."
"Friends."
The line went quiet.
Then June said something that made Anastasia's skin prickle.
"She knows I called you."
"How?"
"I just saw a black SUV outside my apartment."
Maya stood.
"Do not go outside."
June's voice broke.
"I have to go."
The call ended.
Maya immediately contacted Ruiz.
Anastasia stared at the dead screen.
Her mother touched her shoulder.
"Who are these people?"
Anastasia looked toward the garment bag hanging in the hallway.
For the first time, she understood that Melissa's cruelty had never been random.
May you like
It had been a system.
And Anastasia had married into it.
