Chapter 7 - Sign Here, Mrs. Harrington.

The document on June's flash drive was fourteen pages long.
Its title looked harmless.
MARITAL PROPERTY CLARIFICATION AGREEMENT.
Maya read it once in silence.
Then she read it again with a yellow marker.
By the time she finished, almost every page was marked.
Anastasia sat across from her.
"What does it do?"
"In plain English?"
"Yes."
"It gives Callan control over any decision involving your grandmother's land."
Anastasia felt heat rise into her face.
"He told me that agreement was about protecting both of us from business liability."
"This version is not."
Maya turned to page nine.
"It also says that if you voluntarily leave the marital residence within the first year, certain financial promises in your prenup disappear."
"I didn't sign this."
"No."
"Could they force me?"
"No."
"Then why stage a lunch?"
Maya looked at the signature page.
"Pressure."
The plan began to look brutally simple.
Melissa wanted Anastasia embarrassed in front of the family.
Brooklyn would provoke her.
Callan would demand obedience.
If Anastasia submitted, Melissa could present the agreement as the price of restoring peace.
If Anastasia refused, Callan could order her out.
Either way, the family would create a crisis around the one thing they wanted her to sign.
Anastasia felt sick.
"So I was never supposed to be part of the family."
Maya did not answer.
She did not need to.
The worst discovery was a handwritten note scanned with the agreement.
It appeared to be from Melissa.
C - after lunch, do not let her call her father first.
Make her choose while she is emotional.
Anastasia read the line again.
Her father had always been the person she called when something felt wrong.
Melissa knew that.
Callan knew it too.
He had once called that closeness "sweet."
Now it looked like a weakness they had studied.
Detective Ruiz took the flash drive into evidence.
The Harrington legal team immediately attacked June's credibility.
They claimed she had stolen confidential documents after being fired for misconduct.
June responded through Maya with a signed statement.
She had not been fired for misconduct.
She had refused to plant pills in a bride's suitcase.
That allegation detonated privately before it became public.
Callan called Anastasia from the hospital using a blocked number.
The court order prohibited contact.
She answered before realizing who it was.
"Ana."
Her entire body tightened.
"Don't call me."
"Please listen."
"You're violating the order."
"My mother is making this worse."
Anastasia almost laughed.
"You slapped me."
"I know."
"No, Callan."
Her voice sharpened.
"You know you hit me."
"That is not the same as understanding it."
He went quiet.
"I was angry."
"You were performing for them."
His breathing changed.
For a moment, she could see the man she had married standing alone somewhere behind the excuses.
Then he said the wrong thing.
"If you had just apologized, none of this would have happened."
Anastasia closed her eyes.
There he was.
The real Callan.
Still searching for a version where her refusal caused his hand to move.
"Do not call me again."
"Ana, wait."
She ended the call.
Maya reported it.
Ruiz obtained the call record.
Then something unexpected happened.
Callan's personal attorney, separate from the Harrington family firm, contacted Maya.
He wanted a private meeting.
"No Melissa," the message said.
"No Brooklyn."
"No family representatives."
Maya showed Anastasia the email.
"What does he want?"
"I don't know."
"Should I go?"
"You won't."
Anastasia looked confused.
"I will."
The meeting took place the next afternoon.
Callan arrived with bandages along one side of his face and neck.
He looked exhausted.
He did not look at Anastasia.
He placed a sealed envelope on the conference table.
"My mother lied to me," he said.
Maya did not reach for the envelope.
"About what?"
Callan finally raised his eyes.
"About why I met my wife."
Anastasia's stomach dropped.
Callan pushed the envelope toward her.
Inside was an email dated eleven months before their first date.
It was from Melissa to Callan.
The subject line was simple.
COLE GIRL.

And the first sentence destroyed the last innocent piece of their love story.
You need to get close to her before someone else buys that land.
