Chapter 14 - A Daughter Turns.

Melissa Harrington responded to Brooklyn's statement exactly as Anastasia expected.

She attacked her daughter.

Through counsel, Melissa suggested Brooklyn had suffered emotional instability since their father's death.

She said grief had distorted Brooklyn's memory.

She said investigators were exploiting a vulnerable young woman.

Brooklyn read the statement from a hotel room and threw her phone across the bed.

Then she called Anastasia.

Maya advised against answering.

Anastasia answered anyway, with Maya beside her.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Brooklyn broke first.

"She's doing it to me now."

Anastasia's expression did not change.

"What did you think she was doing to me?"

Brooklyn started crying.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

"I know I was horrible."

"You stole my grandmother's bracelet."

"My mother told me if I could make you react over something small, Callan would see how possessive you were."

"It wasn't small to me."

"I know that now."

Anastasia almost ended the call.

Then Brooklyn said, "There's more."

Maya immediately began taking notes.

Brooklyn explained that Melissa had planned the welcome lunch for the morning after the honeymoon because she wanted Anastasia exhausted and emotionally off balance.

She instructed Brooklyn to complain about the food.

She instructed two cousins to make jokes about the hardware store.

She told Callan the family was watching whether he could "handle his wife."

It had been humiliation by design.

"Why?" Anastasia asked.

"The land."

"Only the land?"

Brooklyn hesitated.

"No."

Anastasia felt her stomach tighten.

"What else?"

"My father changed the family trust before he died."

Maya looked up.

Brooklyn continued.

"He left Callan voting control over a block of company shares, but there was a condition."

"What condition?"

"If Callan married, his spouse would receive limited beneficiary rights after one year."

Anastasia frowned.

"I never knew that."

"Neither did Callan until after he proposed."

"What rights?"

"Access to certain financial disclosures."

Maya's eyes sharpened.

"That is unusual."

"My father didn't trust Mom."

Brooklyn's voice shook.

"He wanted someone outside the family to be able to see where money was going."

Anastasia understood slowly.

Melissa did not merely dislike her.

If the marriage lasted a year, Anastasia would eventually gain visibility into parts of the Harrington finances.

And Anastasia was the daughter of a man who counted every nail in his store inventory.

She was exactly the kind of outsider Melissa could not control.

"The land was the reason she wanted me close," Anastasia said.

"And the trust was the reason she wanted me gone."

"Yes."

Brooklyn started crying harder.

"I thought Mom just wanted you to sign papers and leave for a few days."

"You helped her stage it."

"Yes."

"You lied when Callan slapped me."

"Yes."

"You smiled."

Brooklyn went silent.

Anastasia's voice dropped.

"I saw you."

"I know."

"Why did you smile?"

The answer took a long time.

"Because for one second I thought she was right."

"About what?"

"That you would finally stop fighting us."

Anastasia closed her eyes.

There was the cruelty she needed Brooklyn to own.

Not Melissa's influence.

Not grief.

Not money.

Choice.

Brooklyn had enjoyed watching her lose.

"I'm going to tell the prosecutor everything," Brooklyn said.

"Good."

"Can you forgive me?"

"No."

The answer was immediate.

Brooklyn inhaled sharply.

Anastasia continued.

"You can tell the truth because it is the right thing to do."

"You do not get forgiveness as payment."

Brooklyn began to speak, then stopped.

Anastasia ended the call.

Maya looked at her.

"You okay?"

"No."

"That was still the right answer."

The next morning, Brooklyn surrendered the password to her father's encrypted archive.

Forensics opened a directory marked PRIVATE - C.H.

Inside were years of documents, recordings, and security clips.

One folder carried Melissa's initials.

Another carried Callan's.

The third was labeled simply:

May you like

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME.

And inside it was a video Charles Harrington had recorded three weeks before his death.
