Chapter 16 - The Hearing.

The courtroom was smaller than Anastasia expected.

There were no dramatic marble stairs inside.

No orchestra of reporters.

Just fluorescent light, wooden benches, attorneys with files, and a judge who looked impatient with everyone.

Melissa sat in the second row behind her lawyers.

She wore navy blue instead of emerald.

Her face was composed.

Brooklyn sat on the opposite side of the room.

Mother and daughter never looked at each other.

Callan did not attend.

The hearing concerned what evidence could be used in Anastasia's case.

Melissa's attorneys argued that Charles's hidden system violated privacy expectations inside the home.

They argued that recordings recovered from the backup device should be excluded or sharply limited.

Maya stood.

"The defense is not asking this court to admit gossip from a private family archive."

She spoke calmly.

"We are asking to use recordings of the incident itself, recordings showing the alleged victim striking Ms. Cole, and recordings establishing that witnesses coordinated conduct immediately before the confrontation."

The prosecutor surprised Anastasia by agreeing that the lunch footage was relevant.

The state was no longer treating the Harrington account as reliable.

Melissa's attorney objected again.

The judge looked over his glasses.

"Your client is not the defendant."

Melissa's jaw tightened.

The lunch footage played first.

The courtroom watched Brooklyn step into Anastasia.

They watched soup spill.

They watched Brooklyn accuse her.

They watched Melissa reinforce the accusation.

They watched Callan approach.

There was no dramatic music.

No commentary.

Only reality.

Then came the slap.

Anastasia heard someone in the gallery gasp.

On screen, she staggered sideways.

Callan stepped toward her again.

Anastasia reached for the pan.

The next seconds were difficult to watch.

She looked away.

Maya did not.

The judge paused the video immediately afterward.

"This court is not deciding guilt today," he said.

"But the recording is plainly relevant."

Melissa stared straight ahead.

Then Maya requested permission to introduce the forty-eight-second audio for the limited purpose of establishing context and witness bias.

Melissa's attorney fought harder.

The judge listened to arguments for nearly an hour.

Finally, he allowed a portion.

Brooklyn's recorded voice filled the room.

"Make it look accidental."

Then Melissa.

"Brooklyn spills the soup, Anastasia reacts, and you take your sister's side."

Melissa's composure cracked.

She whispered something to her lawyer.

The judge looked toward her.

"Ms. Harrington, if you cannot remain quiet, you may leave."

Anastasia watched Melissa lower her eyes.

It was the first time she had ever seen someone give the older woman an order she had to obey.

After the hearing, reporters filled the courthouse steps.

Maya guided Anastasia through a side exit.

They almost reached the car when a voice called her name.

"Anastasia."

She turned.

Callan stood twenty feet away.

His healing injuries were visible but less severe now.

He held no cane.

He had no attorney beside him.

Maya stepped forward.

"You cannot approach her."

"I know."

Callan stopped.

"I just wanted her to hear this from me."

Anastasia said nothing.

He looked at her.

"I told the prosecutor I will testify."

Maya's expression sharpened.

"To what?"

"Everything."

Anastasia's stomach twisted.

"Why now?"

Callan's eyes looked exhausted.

"Because I spent my whole life believing silence was how our family survived."

He glanced toward the courthouse.

"It turns out silence is how my mother controlled us."

Anastasia felt no urge to comfort him.

"That realization came after you hit me."

"I know."

"And after you hid evidence."

"Yes."

Callan nodded.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

"Good."

He accepted the word.

Then he said one thing neither woman expected.

"My mother offered me twenty million dollars yesterday."

Maya frowned.

"For what?"

"To say the audio was fake."

Anastasia stared at him.

Callan gave a bitter smile.

"She still thinks everyone has a price."

He reached into his jacket.

Maya immediately raised a hand.

Callan stopped and gave the envelope to his own attorney, who had just approached from behind.

The attorney passed it to Maya.

Inside was a copy of Melissa's written settlement offer.

At the bottom was a confidentiality clause.

And one line requiring Callan to describe Anastasia publicly as "emotionally unstable and solely responsible."

May you like

Melissa had not learned anything.

She had simply raised the offer.
