Chapter 12 - The Voice in the Dark.

The audio began with the scrape of a chair.
Then Melissa Harrington spoke.
Her voice was unmistakable.
"You have one job today, Brooklyn."
Brooklyn laughed.
"I know."
"Make it look accidental."
Anastasia closed her eyes.
She was sitting beside Maya in a private office at the police station.
Ruiz stood near the monitor.
No one interrupted the recording.
Brooklyn spoke again.
"And if she doesn't take the bait?"
Melissa answered immediately.
"She will."
A man's voice entered.
Callan.
"What exactly are you doing?"
Melissa sounded annoyed.
"What you refused to do yourself."
"I said I'd talk to her."
"You've been talking for months."
Paper rustled.
Melissa continued.
"She signs this today."
Callan's voice lowered.
"She won't."
"Then you make her understand the alternative."
"I'm not threatening my wife."
"No one said threaten."
Melissa paused.
"You embarrass her."
Anastasia's fingers turned cold.
Brooklyn laughed again.
"That won't be hard."
Callan said, "Leave her alone."
Then Melissa delivered the sentence that changed everything.
"Brooklyn spills the soup, Anastasia reacts, and you take your sister's side."
Callan went silent.
Melissa continued.
"She will either apologize and sign while she is desperate to fix the marriage, or she will refuse and you send her out."
Callan's chair scraped.
"This is insane."
"No."
Melissa's voice sharpened.
"This is business."
Callan said something too quiet to hear.
Then Melissa answered.
"You approached her for the land."
Anastasia stopped breathing.
"You married her knowing what we needed."
Callan's voice rose.
"I married her because I love her."
"Then prove you can manage one difficult afternoon."
The recording ended.
No one in the room moved.
Anastasia stared at the blank screen.
There was no satisfaction.
Only grief.
Callan had objected.
That mattered.
Callan had also stayed.
That mattered more.
He knew Brooklyn was going to provoke her.
He knew Melissa wanted the property agreement signed.
He knew the lunch was a trap.
And when the moment came, he still slapped Anastasia for refusing to obey.
Ruiz broke the silence.
"This recording changes the investigation."
Maya looked at Anastasia.
"It changes everything."
The next morning, prosecutors reduced the conditions on Anastasia's release.
The most serious version of the state's case began to weaken.
They still viewed throwing the hot oil as dangerous.
Maya never pretended otherwise.
"What you did has consequences," she told Anastasia.
"But context matters, fear matters, and evidence matters."
Callan's attorney requested another meeting.
Anastasia refused.
Then Callan sent a written statement through counsel.
I knew Brooklyn was supposed to provoke Anastasia.
I did not know exactly how.
I should have stopped the lunch.
I did not.
I struck my wife.
After I struck her, I moved toward her while still angry.
I understand why she believed I might strike her again.
I am responsible for creating that fear.
Anastasia read it twice.
Then she folded it.
Her mother asked, "Does it help?"
"In court?"
"In here."
Renee touched her daughter's chest.
Anastasia shook her head.
"No."
That afternoon, the Harrington family's corporate board announced an internal review of the Mesa development project.
Investors began asking why the chief executive's mother had apparently used her son's marriage to influence a land acquisition.
Melissa responded with fury.
She claimed the audio was manipulated.
She accused June of theft.
She accused Maya of building a media circus.
Then she made one mistake.
During a private call with Callan, she said the words that Detective Ruiz had hoped she would never say.
"You should have destroyed the card when Brooklyn gave it to you."
Callan's attorney had advised him to record every contact from his mother.
He had followed that advice.
Maya listened to the new recording that evening.
Melissa's voice was clear.
So was the implication.
Brooklyn had not hidden the memory card from everyone.
May you like
She had given it to Callan first.
And Callan had hidden that fact from Anastasia.
