Chapter 5 - The Bracelet in the Safe.

June Mercer did not disappear.
She simply stopped answering her phone.
For thirty-six hours, Anastasia imagined every possibility.
Maya urged patience.
Detective Ruiz checked June's apartment and confirmed she was alive, but June refused to open the door or make a formal statement.
"She's terrified," Ruiz said.
"Of Melissa?"
"Of losing whatever she has left."
Anastasia understood that kind of fear better now.
The next break came from a property inventory police had taken during the security-system search.
Among the photographed items was a small wall safe inside Melissa's study.
The safe had not been opened because the warrant covered digital equipment, not personal property.
One photograph showed its door slightly ajar.
Inside, barely visible behind a stack of envelopes, was something silver.
Anastasia enlarged the image on Maya's laptop.
Her pulse jumped.
"That's my grandmother's bracelet."
Maya leaned closer.
"You're sure?"
"There's a tiny blue stone near the clasp."
The photograph was grainy, but the blue fleck was there.
Brooklyn had not simply taken the bracelet and forgotten to return it.
It had ended up inside Melissa's safe.
Maya requested that investigators preserve the item.
The Harrington attorneys objected immediately.
They claimed Anastasia had gifted the bracelet to Brooklyn after the wedding.
Anastasia laughed when Maya read the response.
It was the first time she had laughed in days.
"They really think they can say anything."
"They are used to statements becoming reality because no one can afford to challenge them," Maya said.
The bracelet was eventually recovered.
Its sentimental value mattered more than its price.
But what investigators found beneath it mattered far more.
A cream envelope had been placed in the same safe.
On the front, someone had written one word.
ANASTASIA.
Inside were printed screenshots of private text messages between Anastasia and Callan from before the wedding.
There were conversations about money.
Conversations about children.
Conversations about Anastasia refusing an offer from Melissa to sign a post-wedding financial agreement.
Anastasia's face went pale.
"How did she get these?"
Maya flipped through the pages.
"Callan."
"No."
"He was the only other person in these conversations."
Anastasia stared at a message she remembered sending at two in the morning three months earlier.
I love you, but your mother does not get to decide what happens to my family's property.
Her grandmother had left her a narrow parcel of commercial land on the eastern edge of Mesa.
For years, the land had been worth little.
Then a proposed highway expansion changed everything.
The Harrington construction group had quietly bought surrounding parcels.
They had offered to purchase Anastasia's land twice.
She had refused both times because her father planned to build a larger hardware warehouse there.
Maya looked up sharply.
"Callan's family wanted your property?"
"Before we were even dating."
"Did you know that?"
"Yes, but I thought it was unrelated."
Maya gave her a long look.
"When did you meet Callan?"
"Eight months after the second offer."
The kitchen seemed to shrink.
Anastasia remembered their first date.
Callan had walked into Cole Hardware looking for a specialty drill bit.
He had joked that a man raised around construction should know what he needed.
She had teased him for wearing expensive loafers into a dusty store.
He had returned the next day.
Then the next week.
The romance had felt accidental.
Now accident was the one word Anastasia no longer trusted.
Maya spread the screenshots across the table.
"There's more here than family snobbery."
Anastasia looked at the recovered bracelet resting inside an evidence pouch.
Brooklyn had taken something precious from her bedroom.
Melissa had hidden it beside stolen private messages.
And Callan had given his mother access to conversations Anastasia believed belonged only to her marriage.
"What did they want from me?" Anastasia asked.
Maya tapped the message about the land.
"I think we're finally getting close to the answer."
That night, Anastasia searched her old emails.
At 2:11 a.m., she found one she had ignored months earlier.
It was from Harrington Development.
The subject line contained six words.
FINAL ACQUISITION OFFER - COLE PARCEL 14.
Attached was a number.
May you like
It was three times higher than the previous offer.
And the date on the email was the morning after Callan proposed.
