Chapter 17 - Five Million for the Hardware Store.

Melissa changed tactics when money failed with Callan.

She went after David Cole.

A representative from a Phoenix investment firm entered Cole Hardware on a Tuesday morning and asked to speak privately.

David refused.

The man placed a business card on the counter.

"We are prepared to offer five million dollars for your Mesa parcel."

David stared at him.

"The land isn't for sale."

"This offer expires Friday."

"So does milk."

The man blinked.

David pushed the card back.

"You can take that with you."

Anastasia heard the story that evening.

She should have laughed.

Instead, she asked one question.

"Was it Harrington money?"

Maya traced the investment firm through public corporate filings.

Three layers down, the answer appeared.

Yes.

Melissa was still trying to acquire the land.

Even while facing an evidence-tampering investigation.

Even while her own children were turning against her.

Even while the company board had removed her temporarily.

"She doesn't know how to stop," Anastasia said.

"People like Melissa often mistake persistence for invincibility," Maya replied.

Then June called.

She had received an offer too.

Not for property.

For silence.

A man representing an "employment resolution service" offered her two hundred thousand dollars in exchange for signing a confidentiality agreement and withdrawing her statement.

June recorded the meeting on her phone.

The representative never said Melissa's name.

He did not have to.

He referenced June's years in the Harrington home.

He referenced the pills Melissa asked her to plant.

He referenced the lunch.

Then he made the mistake of saying, "Mrs. H wants everyone to move forward."

Ruiz took the recording.

The pressure campaign became fresh evidence.

Melissa's attorneys claimed the representative acted without authorization.

The representative stopped answering calls.

Then his company disappeared from its downtown office.

The Harrington board called an emergency meeting.

Callan attended.

So did Brooklyn.

Melissa was invited to respond to questions.

She refused.

By evening, the board stripped her of access to company systems pending investigation.

Anastasia thought that might finally slow her down.

It did not.

At 11:17 p.m., a fire alarm sounded at Cole Hardware.

David and Renee were home.

The store was closed.

Firefighters arrived within minutes.

There was smoke but little flame.

Someone had forced open a rear electrical panel and damaged wiring.

Police found no proof connecting the incident to Melissa.

Maya warned Anastasia not to make accusations.

Anastasia knew.

Still, she stood outside the store at midnight watching firefighters carry fans through the doorway.

Her father's business smelled like burned insulation.

David put an arm around her.

"They want the land badly."

Anastasia looked at him.

"Are you scared?"

"Yes."

She had never heard her father say that word so plainly.

He continued.

"I'm scared of what people do when they believe money has always protected them."

Anastasia looked through the glass doors.

Cole Hardware had survived recessions, chain stores, supply shortages, and David's first terrible attempt at bookkeeping.

It would survive this too.

The next morning, a package arrived for Anastasia.

No return address.

Inside was a printed photograph of the hardware store taken the previous night.

Across the bottom, someone had written:

SELL BEFORE SOMETHING WORSE HAPPENS.

Maya called Ruiz.

Ruiz called the postal inspector.

David called his insurance company.

Anastasia did something else.

She called a local land trust.

"Is this about selling property?" the representative asked.

"No."

Anastasia looked at the photograph.

"It's about making sure one family can never use it."

By the end of the day, she had begun exploring a conservation and community-use restriction that could permanently block the Harrington development plan.

For the first time, Melissa's threat had produced the exact opposite result she wanted.

But that night, Maya called with news that made Anastasia forget the land.

May you like

The prosecutor had made a decision about her criminal charge.

And Anastasia would hear it in court the next morning.
