Chapter 8: The Doctor’s Confession

Chapter 8: The Doctor’s Confession
The room went completely silent.
The only sound was the faint hum of the old mansion’s electrical system.
Olivia stared at Dr. Michael Harper.
The man she thought had disappeared.
The man she thought needed saving.
The man who had helped expose Daniel’s plan.
Now he stood in the vault doorway.
Holding a gun.

“Doctor...” Olivia whispered.
Dr. Harper looked at her sadly.
“I’m sorry it had to happen this way.”
Victor immediately stepped in front of Olivia.
“You’re making a mistake, Michael.”
Dr. Harper’s expression changed.
A cold smile appeared.
“Am I?”
His eyes moved around the vault.
“At least now, the truth can finally come out.”
Sophie grabbed Olivia’s arm.
“Don’t move.”
Emma stood frozen.
She looked completely terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
Olivia noticed.
“Emma.”
Her friend looked at her.
“You knew.”
Emma shook her head quickly.
“No.”
But her voice was weak.
Olivia’s heart sank.
“You knew he was involved.”
Emma looked down.
“I suspected.”
The confession hurt more than Olivia expected.
Another betrayal.
Another secret.
How many more people had been hiding things from her?
Dr. Harper stepped into the vault.
“Your father was a brilliant man.”
Olivia stared at him.
“Then why did you kill him?”
The question hung in the air.
Dr. Harper didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked around the vault.
“This room contains everything Richard discovered.”
Victor’s voice became angry.
“You helped him build this place.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know exactly what he left behind.”
Dr. Harper smiled.
“That’s why I’m here.”
Olivia tightened her fists.
“You were my father’s friend.”
Dr. Harper looked at her.
“I was.”
The answer was colder than she expected.
“You sound like you regret it.”
“I do.”
A pause.
“But regret doesn’t change what happened.”
Olivia felt a chill.
“Tell me the truth.”
Dr. Harper lowered the gun slightly.
“Your father discovered that someone inside his company had been stealing millions.”
Olivia looked at Daniel.
But Daniel wasn’t there.
He had stayed behind with the officers after the ballroom incident.
For the first time, she wished he was there.
Dr. Harper continued.
“Richard believed Daniel was responsible.”
Victor nodded.
“He was right.”
“No,” Dr. Harper said.
Everyone froze.
“He was wrong.”
The words shocked them.
Olivia stared.
“What?”
Dr. Harper looked directly at her.
“Daniel was not the one who stole from your father.”
Silence.
“Then who was?”
The doctor looked at Victor.
Everyone turned.
Victor’s face hardened.
Olivia’s stomach dropped.
“No.”
Dr. Harper continued.
“Victor Hale had been moving company funds through hidden accounts for years.”
Victor laughed.
“You’re still blaming me?”
“You were caught.”
“You were there too.”
The accusation stopped everyone.
Olivia looked between them.
“What does that mean?”
Dr. Harper sighed.
“The truth is, Richard discovered both of us.”
Olivia’s eyes widened.
“Both?”
The doctor nodded.
“Victor was stealing money.”
A pause.
“And I helped cover it up.”
The words echoed.
Olivia felt sick.
“You?”
Dr. Harper looked ashamed.
“I was afraid.”
“Afraid?”
“My medical research depended on Richard’s funding. When Victor threatened to expose my mistakes, I made a choice.”
Olivia’s voice shook.
“You helped them.”
“Yes.”
The confession was devastating.
Her father’s closest friend.
The person she trusted.
The person who had saved her tonight.
Had once helped destroy her family.
“But I didn’t kill him,” Dr. Harper said.
Nobody spoke.
“I swear to you, Olivia. I made terrible choices, but I did not murder Richard.”
Victor stepped forward.
“You expect her to believe that?”
Dr. Harper looked at him.
“You know who did.”
The room froze.
Olivia looked at Victor.
Then back at Dr. Harper.
“Who?”
Neither man answered.
Then suddenly, the vault lights flickered.
Everyone looked upward.
A small camera in the corner turned on.
A red light blinked.
Someone was watching.
A voice came through the speaker.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
“Finally.”
Everyone froze.
Olivia felt her blood run cold.
Because she recognized the voice.
It was impossible.
But she knew it.
“Mom?”
The room went silent.
Olivia’s mother had died when she was sixteen.
She had spent half her life believing she would never hear that voice again.
But now...
it was coming from the hidden speaker.
“Hello, Olivia.”
Her mother’s voice continued.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.”
Olivia covered her mouth.
“No...”
Victor stepped back.
Dr. Harper looked horrified.
“How?”
The voice continued.
“Because your father made one mistake.”
A pause.
“He trusted the wrong people.”
The camera moved slightly.
Then the woman spoke again.
“But he also made one smart decision.”
Olivia stared at the speaker.
“What decision?”
The answer came softly.
“He hid the truth where nobody would look.”
A pause.
“Inside his own family.”
Everyone looked confused.
Then the vault door suddenly locked.
CLANK.
Olivia turned.
They were trapped.
Her mother’s voice continued:
“The person who destroyed our family is standing inside that room.”
Silence.
Then came the final words.
“And Olivia...”
A pause.
“Don’t trust anyone.”
The camera shut off.
The vault lights went dark.
May you like
And in the darkness...
someone moved.
