Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Message

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Message
The ballroom had never felt so cold.
Only minutes earlier, it had been filled with celebration.
A beautiful bride.
A smiling groom.
Hundreds of guests watching what was supposed to be the beginning of a perfect marriage.
Now, the same room felt like the scene of a crime.
Olivia couldn’t take her eyes off Emma’s phone.

The message remained on the screen.
"You failed. Finish what you started, or everyone learns the truth."
Those words felt heavier than the accusation itself.
Because they proved one thing.
Emma wasn’t acting alone.
Someone had been giving orders.
Someone had been waiting.
“Who sent that?” Dr. Harper asked.
His voice was calm, but his eyes were serious.
Emma quickly locked the phone.
“Nobody.”
The answer came too fast.
Olivia noticed.
Everyone noticed.
“Nobody?” Olivia repeated.
Her voice cracked.
“Emma, I just watched my fiancé almost poison my wedding cake, and now a stranger is threatening you. Don’t stand there and tell me nobody.”
Emma looked away.
For the first time in twelve years, Olivia didn’t recognize her.
The woman standing in front of her looked like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hide.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Olivia, listen to me.”
She turned sharply.
“Don’t.”
The single word stopped him.
The man who had always controlled every conversation suddenly had nothing to say.
“You lied to me,” Olivia whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
“No. You don’t understand.”
“Then help me understand.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Why was there a sedative in my cake?”
Silence.
Daniel looked around the room.
Hundreds of people were watching.
The perfect image he had built for years was collapsing in front of everyone.
“I didn’t put anything dangerous in that cake,” he finally said.
Dr. Harper frowned.
“But someone did.”
Daniel looked at him.
And for a moment, Olivia saw something strange.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Who are you afraid of?” Olivia asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was when everyone realized something.
Daniel Cross wasn’t the person in control.
He was scared of someone too.
Suddenly, one of the officers noticed movement near the side entrance.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
A man in a black suit was leaving the ballroom.
“Sir, stop!”
The man ignored him.
The officer moved quickly and grabbed his arm.
The stranger pulled away.
“I’m just leaving.”
“After a possible poisoning attempt at a wedding?”
The man froze.
Olivia stared at him.
She had never seen him before.
But Daniel had.
The moment their eyes met, Daniel’s face changed.
“You.”
The stranger smiled slightly.
“Hello, Daniel.”
The entire room went silent.
Olivia looked between them.
“You know him?”
Daniel didn’t respond.
The stranger adjusted his jacket.
“My name is Victor Hale.”
Dr. Harper’s expression changed.
“Victor Hale?”
The name clearly meant something.
“You’re supposed to be overseas.”
Victor smiled.
“Plans change.”
Olivia felt a chill.
“Who is he?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Dr. Harper spoke.
“He’s a private investor.”
The old doctor paused.
“And someone who has worked with Daniel before.”
Olivia looked at Daniel.
“Worked with him doing what?”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“This has nothing to do with you.”
The words struck harder than any confession.
Nothing to do with her?
Her wedding.
Her cake.
Her best friend.
Her future.
Everything had to do with her.
Sophie stepped closer.
“Actually, I think it has everything to do with her.”
She reached into her pocket.
“I found something else.”
Everyone looked at her.
Another photograph.
Olivia’s heart sank.
“How many pictures did you take?”
Sophie hesitated.
“Enough.”
She handed the photo to Dr. Harper.
The image showed Daniel and Emma inside the storage room.
But this time...
there was something else.
A folder.
Sitting on the table between them.
With Olivia’s name written across the front.
Olivia felt her stomach drop.
“What is that?”
Daniel’s face went completely pale.
Victor Hale smiled.
And that frightened Olivia more than anything.
Because he looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment.
“That,” Victor said quietly,
“is the reason your wedding was never supposed to happen.”
The ballroom erupted.
Olivia stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Victor looked directly at her.
“Your fiancé wasn’t planning to marry you because he loved you.”
A pause.
“He was planning to marry you because of what your father left behind.”
Olivia froze.
Her father had been dead for five years.
There was nothing left.
At least...
that was what she believed.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor slowly walked closer.
“Your father didn’t lose everything before he died.”
Olivia stopped breathing.
“He hid something.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
He knew exactly what Victor was about to reveal.
“Your father left behind an inheritance worth nearly eighty million dollars.”
Gasps filled the ballroom.
Olivia felt dizzy.
“That’s impossible.”
Victor smiled.
“No, Olivia.”
He looked at Daniel.
“That’s why he needed you.”
Daniel looked away.
And in that moment...
Olivia finally understood.
The wedding.
The romance.
The perfect relationship.
Maybe none of it had been real.
Maybe she had never been the woman Daniel loved.
She had only been the key to something he wanted.
Then Victor leaned closer and whispered:
“But the worst part?”
Olivia looked at him.
“What?”
Victor’s expression turned serious.
“Your father didn’t hide the money from the world.”
A pause.
“He hid it from Daniel Cross.”
The room went silent.
And Olivia realized the truth was much bigger than a poisoned wedding cake.
Someone had tried to destroy her marriage.
May you like
But someone else had been trying to protect her.
And now she needed to know why.
