Chapter 11: The Person Behind the Mask

Chapter 11: The Person Behind the Mask

Olivia stopped running.

The voice echoed through the darkness.

A voice she recognized.

A voice she had trusted.

A voice that had stood beside her during the worst night of her life.

Her mother grabbed her arm.

“Olivia, keep moving.”

But Olivia couldn’t.

She turned slowly toward the greenhouse.

The figure stepped out from the shadows.

The moonlight revealed his face.

And Olivia felt the air leave her lungs.

“Dr. Harper...”

The old doctor stood there.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

Her mother immediately moved in front of Olivia.

“You.”

Dr. Harper looked at Catherine Bennett.

“After fifteen years, you still know how to disappear.”

Olivia stared between them.

“You know each other?”

Neither answered.

That silence was enough.

“You knew my mother was alive.”

Dr. Harper looked at Olivia.

“Yes.”

The betrayal felt worse because of how easily he admitted it.

“How long?”

A pause.

“Since the beginning.”

Olivia felt tears burn her eyes.

“Since the beginning?”

She stepped closer.

“You let me believe she was dead.”

Dr. Harper lowered his gaze.

“I thought it was safer.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Her voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.”

She shook her head.

“But nobody ever protected me from the truth.”

Catherine touched her daughter’s shoulder.

“She’s right.”

Everyone froze.

Even Dr. Harper looked surprised.

Catherine continued:

“She deserved to know.”

The doctor looked away.

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you tell her?”

Dr. Harper didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Fear.

Olivia looked at him.

“You knew who was responsible.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

The doctor remained silent.

Catherine stepped forward.

“Michael.”

Her voice was cold.

“You’ve hidden enough.”

Dr. Harper closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“It was Margaret.”

Olivia froze.

“Who?”

Her mother looked at her.

“Your father’s sister.”

Olivia felt confused.

“My aunt?”

Dr. Harper nodded.

“Margaret Bennett.”

The name brought back memories.

A woman who visited often when Olivia was young.

A woman who always smiled.

A woman who had cried the loudest at her father’s funeral.

“No.”

Catherine looked heartbroken.

“Yes.”

Olivia shook her head.

“She loved my father.”

Catherine’s expression was painful.

“She loved what your father had.”

The truth hit hard.

Dr. Harper continued.

“Margaret believed Richard owed her everything. When he built the company, she expected control.”

“But he refused.”

Olivia listened carefully.

“He believed she was too reckless. Too focused on power.”

Catherine nodded.

“After that, she started working against him.”

Olivia’s mind raced.

“The stolen money.”

Dr. Harper nodded.

“Margaret created hidden accounts. She moved company funds slowly so nobody would notice.”

“And my father found out.”

“Yes.”

Olivia looked toward the greenhouse.

“So she killed him.”

Silence.

Then Dr. Harper spoke.

“She planned it.”

A pause.

“But she wasn’t alone.”

Olivia’s stomach tightened.

“Who helped her?”

Nobody wanted to answer.

Then Catherine said:

“Daniel.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

Of course.

The man she almost married.

The man who had entered her life when she was vulnerable.

The man who knew everything about her family.

“He worked with my aunt?”

Dr. Harper nodded.

“Daniel was connected to Margaret long before he met you.”

Olivia felt sick.

“The relationship was planned?”

Catherine looked at her sadly.

“Yes.”

Every memory replayed.

Their first meeting.

His kindness.

His patience.

The way he always seemed to appear when she needed help.

All of it.

A carefully designed performance.

Then Catherine reached into her coat.

“I have something for you.”

She handed Olivia a small key.

“This belonged to your father.”

Olivia looked at it.

“What does it open?”

Catherine looked toward the mansion.

“The final room.”

Victor’s voice suddenly came from behind them.

Everyone turned.

He was standing near the trees.

Along with Sophie and Emma.

“You came.”

Olivia looked surprised.

“How did you find me?”

Sophie raised her phone.

“Your location was still connected.”

Olivia sighed.

“You followed me.”

“Yes.”

Sophie looked around.

“And apparently we were right.”

Victor looked at Catherine.

“We need to move.”

Everyone became alert.

“Why?”

Victor pointed toward the road.

A black vehicle was approaching.

Fast.

Dr. Harper’s face changed.

“They found us.”

The vehicle stopped.

The doors opened.

Several armed men stepped out.

But they weren’t looking at Olivia.

They were looking at Catherine.

One man shouted:

“Catherine Bennett!”

Everyone froze.

The man continued:

“Your fifteen-year hiding game is over.”

Olivia grabbed her mother’s hand.

“Who are they?”

Catherine looked terrified.

“They work for Margaret.”

The men began moving closer.

Then suddenly...

another car crashed through the gate.

Everyone turned.

A familiar figure stepped out.

Daniel Cross.

But he wasn’t smiling.

He wasn’t arrogant.

He looked desperate.

“Get away from them!”

Everyone froze.

Olivia stared.

“Daniel?”

He looked at her.

And for the first time...

she saw something she never expected.

Fear.

“I know where Margaret is.”

A pause.

“And I know what she plans to do next.”

The night became silent.

May you like

Because the man Olivia thought was her enemy...

might be the only person who could stop the real one.
