Chapter 14: The Truth About Catherine Bennett

Chapter 14: The Truth About Catherine Bennett
The room fell silent.
Olivia stared at her mother.
Catherine stood at the bottom of the stairs, holding the second journal against her chest.
For the first time since their reunion, she looked afraid.
Not afraid of Margaret.
Not afraid of the people surrounding her.
Afraid of Olivia.
“Mom...”
The word came out broken.

Catherine’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to tell you.”
Olivia looked at the journal in her hands.
“Then why didn’t you?”
No answer.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
Margaret smiled from across the room.
“This is the moment I’ve been waiting for.”
Olivia turned toward her.
“What do you mean?”
Margaret walked slowly around the table.
“Your mother has spent fifteen years pretending to be a victim.”
Catherine’s expression hardened.
“Don’t listen to her.”
Margaret laughed.
“You always were good at acting.”
Olivia looked between them.
“Someone needs to explain.”
Catherine stepped forward.
“Olivia, please.”
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“But this time, you’re going to tell me everything.”
The room became still.
Catherine looked down.
Then she nodded.
“You deserve the truth.”
She opened the journal.
“This belonged to your father.”
Olivia stared.
“Why do you have it?”
Catherine took a deep breath.
“Because Richard gave it to me before he died.”
The words shocked everyone.
Victor stepped forward.
“He gave it to you?”
“Yes.”
Dr. Harper looked confused.
“Why would he do that?”
Catherine looked at him.
“Because he knew you had already made a mistake.”
The doctor lowered his head.
A painful silence followed.
Catherine continued.
“Richard knew there was betrayal inside the company.”
She looked at Victor.
“He knew about the stolen money.”
Then Dr. Harper.
“He knew about the cover-up.”
Then finally...
Margaret.
“And he knew Margaret was trying to take control.”
Margaret smiled.
“But he trusted you.”
Catherine looked at her.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And that was his mistake.”
Everyone froze.
Olivia felt her heart sink.
“What does that mean?”
Catherine closed her eyes.
“Because I knew.”
Olivia stared.
“Knew what?”
Catherine’s voice became quiet.
“I knew Margaret was planning something.”
The room went silent.
“I knew Daniel was involved.”
Olivia felt like she couldn’t breathe.
“And you did nothing?”
Catherine looked devastated.
“I tried.”
“But you disappeared.”
“I had no choice.”
Olivia shook her head.
“There is always a choice.”
Catherine nodded.
“You’re right.”
A tear fell down her face.
“I made the wrong one.”
Margaret watched silently.
Almost enjoying the moment.
Catherine continued.
“Your father discovered that Margaret planned to destroy everything. But he also discovered something worse.”
“What?”
Catherine looked at Olivia.
“She wasn’t working alone.”
Everyone froze.
Olivia whispered:
“Who else?”
Catherine looked toward Margaret.
“She had someone inside the family.”
Margaret’s smile disappeared.
Catherine continued:
“Someone who could access Richard’s private accounts.”
The room became tense.
“Who?”
Catherine looked down.
Then said:
“Me.”
The confession hit like an explosion.
Olivia stepped back.
“No.”
Catherine immediately shook her head.
“Not the way you think.”
“You helped her?”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I helped Richard.”
Olivia looked confused.
“What?”
Catherine explained.
“Richard knew Margaret was dangerous. He needed someone close to her to find proof.”
She looked at the journal.
“I was supposed to gather evidence.”
Victor frowned.
“Then why did you disappear?”
Catherine looked at him.
“Because Margaret found out.”
A cold silence followed.
“She tried to kill me.”
Olivia’s eyes widened.
“The accident?”
Catherine nodded.
“The car crash everyone believed killed me.”
Olivia covered her mouth.
“It wasn’t an accident.”
“No.”
Catherine looked at Margaret.
“She arranged it.”
Margaret finally spoke.
“You survived.”
A chilling smile.
“That was unfortunate.”
Olivia felt anger rise.
“You tried to kill my mother.”
Margaret shrugged.
“She knew too much.”
Catherine continued.
“Richard helped me escape. He wanted me to take the evidence and disappear.”
“But why leave me?”
The question Olivia had carried for fifteen years.
The question that hurt the most.
Catherine’s face broke.
“Because Margaret threatened you.”
Silence.
“She told me if I came back, she would hurt you.”
Olivia’s anger softened.
Just slightly.
Catherine looked at her daughter.
“I watched you from far away.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Every birthday.”
“Every achievement.”
“Every moment I wanted to hold you.”
She covered her mouth.
“But I stayed away because I loved you.”
Olivia didn’t know what to feel.
Pain.
Anger.
Relief.
All at once.
Then Margaret laughed.
“Beautiful story.”
Everyone turned.
“But it doesn’t change one thing.”
She pointed at Catherine.
“She still hid the truth.”
Olivia looked at Margaret.
“And you killed my father.”
Margaret smiled.
“Yes.”
The confession was terrifying.
No hesitation.
No regret.
“Yes.”
Everyone froze.
“I killed Richard because he refused to give me what I deserved.”
Margaret picked up the journal.
“But he made one final mistake.”
She opened it.
“He recorded everything.”
Olivia looked at the journal.
“The evidence.”
Margaret nodded.
“Exactly.”
Then suddenly, the lights flickered.
A loud alarm began ringing.
Everyone turned.
The mansion security system had activated.
Margaret looked surprised.
“What?”
Daniel’s voice came from the doorway.
“You’re not the only one who planned ahead.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel stood there holding a phone.
On the screen was a recording.
A live upload.
Margaret’s confession.
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“I sent everything.”
Margaret’s face changed.
For the first time...
she looked afraid.
Because the truth was no longer hidden.
It was already spreading.
But then Margaret smiled.
And whispered:
“You still don’t understand.”
Olivia frowned.
“What?”
Margaret looked directly at her.
“The evidence proves I killed your father.”
A pause.
“But it also proves something else.”
The room went silent.
“What?”
Margaret smiled.
“Your father was preparing to expose you.”
Olivia froze.
“Me?”
Margaret nodded.
“He discovered the truth about who you really are.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Margaret said:
“Open the final journal.”
Olivia looked down.
Her hands trembled.
May you like
Because the last secret...
was about her.
