Chapter 5: The Man Everyone Trusted

Chapter 5: The Man Everyone Trusted
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The accusation hung in the ballroom like a storm cloud.
Dr. Michael Harper.
The respected toxicologist.
Olivia’s uncle’s closest friend.
The man who had tested the cake.
The man who had exposed the poison.
The man everyone believed had saved her life.
Now Daniel was saying he had murdered her father.

“No,” Olivia whispered.
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, that’s impossible.”
Dr. Harper looked devastated.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just hurt.
“Olivia...”
She stepped back.
“Don’t.”
The doctor stopped.
Because he understood.
The woman he had just protected was suddenly questioning whether he had been protecting her or hiding something.
Daniel watched the confusion spread across the room.
And Olivia noticed something.
He looked calmer now.
Almost relieved.
As if revealing this secret had been his plan all along.
“You see?” Daniel said.
“Everyone believes they know the truth.”
He pointed toward Dr. Harper.
“But nobody ever questioned the man who was closest to your father.”
“Stop talking,” Olivia said.
Daniel ignored her.
“Your father trusted him.”
A pause.
“And that was his mistake.”
Dr. Harper’s expression hardened.
“You’re desperate, Daniel.”
“Am I?”
Daniel looked around.
“Ask him where he was the night Richard Bennett died.”
The name hit Olivia instantly.
Her father’s name.
Richard Bennett.
The ballroom became quiet.
Olivia turned toward Dr. Harper.
“Where were you?”
The doctor looked at her.
His silence lasted only a few seconds.
But it was enough.
Olivia’s heart sank.
“You were there?”
Dr. Harper sighed.
“Yes.”
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
Olivia stared at him.
“You were at my father’s house?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Dr. Harper looked down.
“Because your father asked me not to.”
Olivia felt confused.
“Why?”
The doctor looked toward Daniel.
“Because he knew someone was trying to take everything from you.”
Daniel laughed.
“Convenient answer.”
Dr. Harper ignored him.
“Richard called me three days before he died. He told me he had discovered someone inside his company was stealing from him.”
Olivia’s breathing slowed.
“Who?”
Dr. Harper looked at Daniel.
The room reacted immediately.
Daniel shook his head.
“Don’t listen to him.”
But Olivia was no longer looking at Daniel.
She was looking at the doctor.
“Tell me.”
Dr. Harper took a deep breath.
“Richard believed Daniel was involved.”
The words hit harder than she expected.
Olivia looked at Daniel.
He didn’t deny it.
Not immediately.
That frightened her.
Then Daniel smiled.
“Of course.”
He looked at everyone.
“This is exactly what Victor wanted.”
Victor frowned.
“What?”
Daniel pointed toward him.
“They’re both lying.”
Olivia felt overwhelmed.
Every person had a different version of the truth.
Every person claimed to be protecting her.
Every person had secrets.
Then Sophie spoke.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
The young waitress looked nervous.
“But there’s something I don’t understand.”
She looked at Dr. Harper.
“If you knew someone was trying to hurt Olivia... why didn’t you warn her?”
The question was simple.
But nobody had an answer.
Dr. Harper closed his eyes.
“Because I failed.”
Olivia stared.
“What does that mean?”
The doctor looked older suddenly.
Tired.
Broken.
“Your father didn’t trust anyone anymore.”
A pause.
“He believed someone close to him had already betrayed him.”
Olivia looked at the letter.
The warning.
Do not trust anyone who tries to rush you into marriage.
Her father knew.
He knew Daniel was dangerous.
But why didn’t he tell her?
Why leave clues instead of answers?
Then Dr. Harper reached into his pocket.
“I kept something from Richard’s final days.”
Olivia froze.
“What?”
He removed a small envelope.
“I was supposed to give this to you if something happened to him.”
Her hands shook.
“Why didn’t you?”
The doctor looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.”
The room became silent.
“Afraid of what?”
Dr. Harper looked directly at Daniel.
“Of what he would do if he found out I had it.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But Olivia noticed.
“What is it?”
Dr. Harper handed her the envelope.
Olivia opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Only a few lines.
But the first sentence made her blood run cold.
Olivia, if Daniel is still in your life when you read this, then he has already succeeded in convincing you he loves you.
Her hands began trembling.
She continued.
The person you should fear is not the person who threatens you openly.
It is the person who makes you feel safe while taking everything from you.
Olivia slowly lowered the letter.
She looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
For the first time...
she knew.
Her father had been trying to warn her.
And she had walked straight into the trap.
Then another sound interrupted the silence.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked around.
It wasn’t Emma’s phone.
It wasn’t Daniel’s.
It was Dr. Harper’s.
The doctor checked the screen.
His face changed instantly.
“What is it?” Olivia asked.
He didn’t answer.
Because the message on the screen was visible to everyone nearby.
One sentence.
"You should have stayed silent five years ago."
Dr. Harper’s hands started shaking.
Olivia felt a chill.
Because whoever was behind everything...
May you like
was not finished.
And now they were threatening the one person who might know the truth.
