Chapter 4: The Folder That Changed Everything

Chapter 4: The Folder That Changed Everything

The black folder sat on the table like a warning.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The entire ballroom seemed trapped in that single moment.

Olivia stared at it.

She wanted to believe Daniel was lying.

She wanted to believe this was just another manipulation tactic.

But a small part of her feared something worse.

What if there was a truth she wasn’t ready to face?

“What’s inside?” Dr. Harper asked.

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“You’ll find out.”

The officer standing beside him stepped closer.

“Don’t move.”

Daniel ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Olivia.

“You think I’m the villain because I kept secrets?”

He laughed quietly.

“You have no idea what your father was capable of.”

Olivia’s hands tightened around the letter.

“Don’t talk about my father.”

“Why?”

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“Because you only know the version he wanted you to know.”

The words cut deep.

Her father had always been her hero.

A brilliant businessman.
A loving father.
The man who taught her to stand up for herself.

But now everyone seemed to have a different story.

Victor crossed his arms.

“Daniel is trying to confuse you.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Of course you’d say that.”

Olivia looked between them.

“Enough.”

Her voice surprised everyone.

It was calm.

Controlled.

“I’m tired of everyone speaking around me.”

She walked toward the table.

“I want the folder.”

Dr. Harper immediately stepped forward.

“Olivia, be careful.”

She nodded.

“I will.”

But she reached for it anyway.

The moment her fingers touched the folder, she felt something strange.

It was heavy.

Not because of the papers inside.

Because of what it represented.

Years of secrets.

Years of lies.

She opened it.

The first document was a legal contract.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she froze.

“What is this?”

Nobody answered.

She lifted the paper.

“This is my father’s company transfer agreement.”

Victor’s expression changed.

Daniel smiled slightly.

Olivia continued.

The document showed that shortly before his death, her father had transferred controlling ownership of his company into a private trust.

A trust she had never heard of.

A trust managed by...

Her eyes stopped.

“Daniel?”

The room went silent.

The document clearly listed him as one of the trustees.

Olivia looked up slowly.

“You were managing my father’s company?”

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

Her heart sank.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you weren’t ready.”

She stared at him.

“You don’t get to decide what I’m ready for.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I was trying to protect your father’s legacy.”

Victor stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Daniel turned.

“You’re the one who betrayed him.”

The accusation shocked everyone.

Olivia looked at Victor.

“What does that mean?”

Victor remained silent.

That silence worried her.

“Victor?”

Finally, he spoke.

“Your father and I had a business disagreement.”

“A disagreement?”

Daniel laughed.

“That’s what you call stealing?”

Victor’s face darkened.

“I never stole anything.”

“Then why did you disappear after his death?”

The room went quiet again.

Olivia looked at Victor.

“You disappeared?”

Victor looked away.

“I had my reasons.”

Before Olivia could ask more, Emma spoke.

“There’s something else.”

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

“I saw those documents before.”

Olivia stared at her.

“What?”

Emma wiped her tears.

“Daniel showed them to me.”

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Emma’s voice became stronger.

“He told me Olivia would never understand. He said she was too emotional to handle the truth.”

Olivia felt a wave of anger.

Too emotional.

That was how Daniel had always described her.

Whenever she questioned something.

Whenever she wanted answers.

He made her feel unreasonable.

He made her doubt herself.

And suddenly she realized...

that was part of the plan.

“Daniel,” Olivia said quietly.

He looked at her.

“How long were you planning this?”

His expression changed.

For the first time, he stopped pretending.

“Planning what?”

“This.”

She pointed around the room.

“The wedding. The inheritance. The company.”

Daniel looked at the floor.

And then he said something that broke her heart.

“Longer than you think.”

A painful silence followed.

The officers moved closer.

But before they could grab him, Daniel spoke again.

“There’s one thing you still don’t know.”

Olivia looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel smiled.

“Your father didn’t die naturally.”

Everyone froze.

Dr. Harper’s face changed.

“What did you say?”

Daniel looked directly at Olivia.

“He was murdered.”

The room erupted.

Olivia felt the world stop.

“No.”

Daniel continued.

“And the person responsible...”

He looked slowly across the ballroom.

Stopped.

And pointed.

“Is standing right here.”

Every guest turned.

Olivia followed his eyes.

And her heart nearly stopped.

Because Daniel wasn’t pointing at Victor.

He wasn’t pointing at Emma.

He was pointing at...

Dr. Michael Harper.

Her father’s oldest friend.

The man who had just saved her life.

The man who had discovered the poison.

The man everyone trusted.

Olivia stepped backward.

“No...”

Dr. Harper’s face went pale.

“Daniel, don’t do this.”

But Daniel smiled.

“Tell her the truth, Doctor.”

The ballroom fell silent.

And Olivia realized something terrifying.

The wedding had never been about cake.

It had never been about money.

May you like

It had been about a secret buried five years ago.

A secret someone had killed to protect.
