Chapter 7: The Vault Beneath the House

Chapter 7: The Vault Beneath the House

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Guests shouted.

Chairs scraped across the marble floor.

The officers immediately moved through the crowd, searching every corner.

But Dr. Michael Harper was gone.

No one understood how.

The doors had been guarded.

The windows were locked.

The entire ballroom had been watched.

Yet somehow, the man who held the biggest secret about Olivia’s father had disappeared.

Olivia stood frozen, staring at the piece of paper in her hand.

Find the vault.

Three simple words.

But they carried a message.

Someone wanted her to find something.

Someone wanted her to uncover the truth.

“Where did he go?” one officer demanded.

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked around the room.

And for the first time all night, he didn’t look confident.

He looked worried.

Olivia noticed.

“You know something.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

“Don’t lie.”

“I’m not.”

She stepped closer.

“Every time something happens, you already know more than everyone else.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Because I’ve been trying to stop this for years.”

Olivia almost laughed.

“Stop this?”

She held up the paper.

“Someone just kidnapped the man who saved my life.”

Daniel looked at the note.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

Olivia noticed.

“You recognize it.”

Daniel stayed silent.

That was his answer.

“What is the vault?” she asked.

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor stepped forward.

“Your father built one.”

Olivia looked at him.

“A vault?”

Victor nodded.

“Not for money.”

A pause.

“For information.”

The room became quiet.

“What kind of information?”

Victor looked toward the guests.

“This isn’t the place.”

Olivia’s eyes narrowed.

“No more secrets.”

She looked around.

“Not tonight.”

Her voice carried across the ballroom.

“I have spent five years believing people who lied to me.”

She looked at Daniel.

“I believed a man who planned to steal my life.”

Then Emma.

“I believed a friend who betrayed me.”

Then Victor.

“And I believed people who thought they had the right to decide what I could handle.”

Everyone became silent.

“I’m done.”

Olivia held the note tightly.

“Tell me about the vault.”

Victor finally nodded.

“Your father built a private underground room beneath your childhood home.”

Olivia froze.

“My childhood home?”

“Yes.”

“The Bennett estate?”

Victor nodded.

“But after your father died, Daniel convinced you to sell it.”

Olivia felt sick.

She remembered.

Six months after her father’s death, Daniel had told her the mansion was filled with painful memories.

He said selling it would help her move forward.

She had believed him.

“You knew,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

“You knew about the vault.”

His silence confirmed it.

Olivia felt something inside her break.

“You let me sell my own home.”

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Daniel looked away.

That was the first honest thing he had done all night.

Emma suddenly spoke.

“He wasn’t the only one.”

Everyone turned.

“What do you mean?” Olivia asked.

Emma looked ashamed.

“I helped convince you.”

Olivia stared at her.

“You were there?”

Emma nodded.

“Daniel told me the vault contained something dangerous.”

“What?”

Emma shook her head.

“He never told me everything.”

Olivia looked at Daniel.

“Then what was in it?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Victor did.

“The proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Victor’s expression became serious.

“Proof of who killed your father.”

The words hit the room like an explosion.

Olivia stopped breathing.

Her father’s death had always been explained as a sudden heart attack.

A tragedy.

A horrible accident.

But now...

everything she believed was collapsing.

“My father was murdered?”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Before Victor could answer, Daniel spoke.

“You don’t want to know.”

Olivia turned toward him.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because when you find out, you’ll realize everyone you trusted failed you.”

A cold silence followed.

Then Sophie stepped forward.

“I know where the house keys are.”

Everyone looked at her.

Olivia frowned.

“How?”

Sophie hesitated.

“Because I found them in Daniel’s office yesterday.”

Daniel immediately reacted.

“What?”

Sophie pulled out a small key.

“I was cleaning the office area before the wedding.”

She looked at Olivia.

“I found a hidden drawer.”

The key rested in her palm.

“And inside was this.”

Olivia took it.

There was a small metal tag attached.

Engraved with two words:

BENNETT VAULT

Olivia stared at it.

The truth had been hidden beneath her own home.

A place she had abandoned because someone convinced her to.

Then suddenly, Daniel spoke.

“Olivia, don’t go there.”

Everyone looked at him.

His voice wasn’t angry.

It wasn’t manipulative.

It sounded like a warning.

A real warning.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because the vault is exactly what they want you to open.”

Olivia narrowed her eyes.

“Who is they?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The people who killed your father.”

A cold feeling moved through the room.

And for the first time...

Olivia wondered if Daniel had been telling the truth about one thing.

Maybe he wasn’t the only danger.

Maybe he was just one piece of something much bigger.

Later that night, Olivia, Sophie, Emma, and Victor arrived at the abandoned Bennett estate.

The mansion stood in darkness.

Exactly as Olivia remembered.

The place where she grew up.

The place where her father had hidden his final secret.

They entered the basement.

Behind an old wine rack, they found a hidden door.

The key fit perfectly.

The lock clicked.

The vault opened slowly.

Inside was not money.

Not jewelry.

Not documents.

Only one object sat in the center of the room.

A sealed box.

With Olivia’s name written across it.

She reached for it.

But before she opened it...

a voice came from behind them.

“You really should have listened to Daniel.”

Everyone turned.

Standing in the doorway...

was Dr. Michael Harper.

Alive.

May you like

Holding a gun.

And smiling.
