Chapter 3: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About

Chapter 3: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About
The words stayed in Olivia’s mind.
Eighty million dollars.
The number didn’t feel real.
It sounded like something from a movie.
Not her life.
Not the life of a woman standing in the middle of her ruined wedding, surrounded by police officers, shocked guests, and the people who had betrayed her.
“My father didn’t leave me anything,” Olivia said quietly.

Her voice was almost a whisper.
“I went through everything after he died.”
Victor Hale studied her carefully.
“You went through what Daniel allowed you to see.”
Olivia turned toward Daniel.
The man she was supposed to marry looked different now.
The confident businessman.
The charming fiancé.
The man who always seemed to have every answer.
Gone.
Now he looked like someone whose biggest secret had just been exposed.
“Daniel?” Olivia asked.
He didn’t answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Because silence was becoming his confession.
“Say something.”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Olivia...”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Her eyes filled with disappointment.
“Not my name. Not that way. Not like you still care.”
The room became painfully quiet.
Daniel swallowed.
“There are things you don’t understand.”
Olivia almost laughed.
“How many times are you going to say that?”
She pointed toward the cake.
“First, I don’t understand why someone put drugs in my wedding cake.”
Then she pointed toward Emma.
“I don’t understand why my best friend was helping you.”
Then she looked at Victor.
“And now I don’t understand why everyone knows more about my father’s money than I do.”
Her voice grew stronger.
“I’m done not understanding.”
Dr. Harper nodded slowly.
“She deserves the truth.”
Victor looked at Daniel.
“You should have known this day would come.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You think you’re saving her?”
Victor smiled.
“No.”
A pause.
“I think I’m giving her a chance.”
Olivia looked between them.
“What chance?”
Victor reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.
He handed it to Olivia.
“This was supposed to be delivered to you on your thirty-first birthday.”
Olivia stared at the envelope.
Her hands trembled.
“My birthday was three months ago.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t I get it?”
Victor didn’t answer.
Olivia already knew.
She slowly looked at Daniel.
The realization hit her.
“You stopped it.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I was trying to protect you.”
The entire room reacted.
A few guests laughed bitterly.
Even Olivia couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“Protect me?”
She stepped closer.
“From my own inheritance?”
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
Olivia opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
Her father’s handwriting.
Her heart immediately broke.
She hadn’t seen it in five years.
She unfolded the paper.
My dear Olivia,
If you are reading this, it means someone finally allowed you to know the truth.
Her hands started shaking.
I spent my life building something bigger than money. I built something that could protect our family for generations.
She continued reading.
But before I died, I discovered someone close to me was trying to take control of everything.
Olivia stopped.
Her eyes moved quickly across the page.
Do not trust anyone who tries to rush you into marriage. Do not sign anything without a lawyer you personally choose.
Her breathing became uneven.
Because Daniel had done exactly that.
Two months after her father’s death, Daniel had convinced her to move her accounts under his financial management.
He had said it was easier.
Safer.
She had trusted him.
The letter continued.
The person who betrayed me may still be near you.
Olivia lowered the paper.
Her face went pale.
“Who?”
Victor looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Victor.
Neither spoke.
Then Emma suddenly broke down.
“I didn’t want this.”
Everyone turned.
Emma covered her face.
“I never wanted Olivia to get hurt.”
Olivia stared at her.
“Then why did you help him?”
Emma cried.
“Because he threatened me.”
Daniel immediately shouted.
“That’s a lie.”
But Emma looked at him with pure anger.
“No, Daniel.”
Her voice shook.
“You threatened my family.”
The room froze.
Olivia looked at Emma.
“What did he threaten you with?”
Emma wiped her tears.
“My brother.”
A pause.
“Daniel found out my brother had made a mistake years ago. A mistake that could have ruined his life.”
Olivia’s expression changed.
“So he used you.”
Emma nodded.
“I was supposed to distract you. Make sure you trusted him. Make sure you signed the documents.”
Olivia felt sick.
“How long?”
Emma closed her eyes.
“Almost two years.”
Two years.
That was how long she had been living inside a lie.
The romance.
The engagement.
The wedding.
Everything.
Then Dr. Harper picked up the letter.
“There’s one more thing.”
He pointed to the bottom.
A final sentence Olivia hadn’t noticed.
Her father had written:
If Daniel Cross is standing beside you when you read this, run.
The ballroom went silent.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
And for the first time...
Olivia saw the truth.
The man she almost married wasn’t just hiding a secret.
He had been waiting for the perfect moment to take everything from her.
Then Daniel slowly stepped backward.
And reached into his jacket.
The officers immediately reacted.
“Hands where we can see them!”
Daniel froze.
But what he pulled out wasn’t a weapon.
It was a small black folder.
He threw it onto the table.
“You want the truth?”
His voice was cold.
“Fine.”
He looked directly at Olivia.
“But when you see what’s inside that folder...”
A dark smile appeared.
“You’ll realize your father wasn’t the hero you thought he was.”
Olivia stared at the folder.
And suddenly wondered...
May you like
what if the truth destroyed everyone?
Including her.
