Chapter 7: The Secret I Never Told My Father

Chapter 7: The Secret I Never Told My Father

The apartment became completely silent.

Ryan’s words hung in the air.

“Ask Emily why she never told you about the night she left home before she married me.”

My heart dropped.

My father looked at me.

Not with anger.

Not with suspicion.

With confusion.

“Emily?”

I couldn’t speak.

Because Ryan had found the one thing I had spent years trying to forget.

The one memory I never wanted my father to know.

Ryan noticed my silence.

And for the first time all night, he looked confident again.

“You see?”

He slowly shook his head.

“She’s not telling you everything.”

My father turned toward him.

“Careful.”

Ryan ignored the warning.

“You think you know your daughter, Colonel. You think she’s just some innocent victim who made one mistake.”

“Ryan.”

My father’s voice was low.

“Choose your next words carefully.”

But Ryan continued.

“She has been hiding things from you for years.”

My hands tightened around the blanket.

“Stop.”

Everyone looked at me.

It was the first time I had spoken with that much strength.

Ryan smiled.

“There it is.”

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Making sure the truth comes out.”

“No.”

My voice trembled.

“You’re trying to distract everyone.”

For a moment, Ryan said nothing.

Because he knew I was right.

He knew the investigation was closing in.

He knew the evidence was against him.

So he reached for the only weapon he had left.

My past.

My father sat beside me.

“Emily.”

I looked at him.

“I need to know what he’s talking about.”

The pain in his voice hurt more than anything.

Because I could hear it.

He wasn’t asking because he doubted me.

He was asking because he wanted to understand.

I took a deep breath.

“There was a night…”

My voice cracked.

“Before I married Ryan.”

Dad waited patiently.

I looked down at my hands.

“When I left home.”

My father’s expression changed.

Because he remembered.

Three years earlier, I had disappeared for two days.

I told him I needed space.

I told him everything was fine.

I told him not to worry.

But I never told him the real reason.

“I was nineteen,” I whispered.

“I thought I knew everything.”

My father stayed quiet.

“I met someone before Ryan.”

Ryan’s smile faded slightly.

Because he didn’t expect me to continue.

“He wasn’t a good person.”

I swallowed.

“He controlled me.”

My father’s eyes softened.

“He made me believe that nobody would understand me.”

I looked at Ryan.

“Just like you did.”

The room became quiet.

“I finally escaped.”

I looked back at my father.

“But I was embarrassed.”

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“I thought you would see me differently.”

My father looked heartbroken.

“Emily…”

“I thought you would think I was weak.”

His expression changed immediately.

“Never.”

That one word broke me.

Because all these years, I had carried a fear that was never real.

My father reached for my hand.

“You were my daughter before any mistake.”

I cried quietly.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you?”

I looked away.

“Because I thought strong people handled their own problems.”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“Strong people know when they need help.”

Ryan suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

“You’re seriously comparing me to some guy from years ago?”

I turned toward him.

“No.”

My voice became stronger.

“I’m showing everyone your pattern.”

Ryan’s expression changed.

“You found someone vulnerable.”

“You isolated me.”

“You convinced me nobody would believe me.”

“You made me afraid.”

Officer Miller watched him carefully.

Then she asked,

“Mr. Carter, how did you know about Emily’s past?”

Ryan froze.

That was the question he didn’t expect.

Because he had just revealed something important.

Something he shouldn’t have known.

My father noticed too.

“How did you know that story?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

Officer Miller stepped closer.

“Mr. Carter?”

The silence grew.

Then Linda suddenly whispered,

“Ryan…”

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked terrified.

Because she realized something.

Something even she didn’t know.

Ryan hadn’t just been controlling me.

He had been digging into my past.

Collecting information.

Finding weaknesses.

My father slowly stood.

And his voice was colder than ever.

“You didn’t marry my daughter because you loved her.”

Ryan looked at him.

“You chose her because you thought she was someone you could control.”

For the first time...

Ryan didn’t deny it.

And that was the moment everyone in the room understood.

The bruises were only the beginning.

Because the truth about Ryan Carter was much darker than anyone imagined.
