Chapter 14: The Hidden Room

Chapter 14: The Hidden Room
The moment Ryan looked toward the bedroom, everyone noticed.
It was only a second.
A small movement.
A quick glance.
But after everything we had learned about him, even the smallest reaction mattered.
Officer Miller turned her head slowly.
“Why did you look there?”

Ryan immediately looked away.
“I didn’t.”
My father gave a quiet, humorless laugh.
“You’re not very good at lying when you’re under pressure.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“There’s nothing in there.”
Officer Miller didn’t respond.
She simply wrote something down.
And somehow, that was worse.
Because Ryan knew.
She had noticed.
The apartment that once felt like a prison suddenly felt different.
Every corner held a secret.
Every drawer.
Every locked cabinet.
Every place I had never been allowed to look.
I remembered all the times Ryan told me:
“Don’t worry about that.”
“It’s just work stuff.”
“You wouldn’t understand.”
I used to believe him.
Now I wondered what else he had hidden.
A few minutes later, two investigators arrived with authorization to search the apartment.
Ryan became increasingly nervous.
“Do you really think this is necessary?”
Officer Miller looked at him.
“Yes.”
The investigators began documenting everything.
Phones.
Computers.
Documents.
Financial records.
Ryan stood near the wall, watching his carefully controlled world fall apart.
Linda sat quietly on the couch.
She looked older.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had finally realized the person she spent years protecting had become someone she couldn’t defend.
My father stayed beside me.
He never left.
Not once.
An investigator walked into the bedroom.
Ryan immediately stepped forward.
“Careful.”
Everyone looked at him.
The investigator paused.
“Careful of what?”
Ryan quickly corrected himself.
“I mean… there are personal items.”
The investigator nodded.
“Understood.”
But my father noticed.
He always noticed.
“Why are you worried about that room?”
Ryan said nothing.
My father looked at me.
“Emily, were you ever allowed in there?”
I hesitated.
The answer embarrassed me.
“No.”
My father’s expression changed.
“Never?”
I shook my head.
“He said it was his private workspace.”
Officer Miller looked toward the bedroom.
“Did you ever question it?”
I lowered my eyes.
“I tried once.”
“What happened?”
I swallowed.
“He got angry.”
Nobody spoke.
Because now everyone understood.
Ryan didn’t just control what I did.
He controlled what I was allowed to know.
The investigator returned from the bedroom.
“I found something.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“What?”
The investigator held up a small locked box.
“This was hidden behind a panel in the closet.”
My heart dropped.
Ryan moved forward.
“That’s mine.”
Officer Miller stepped between them.
“Stay back.”
Ryan stopped.
The investigator examined the box.
“There’s also a hidden compartment.”
My father looked at Ryan.
“You built a hiding place?”
Ryan didn’t answer.
That was all the answer we needed.
The box was opened carefully.
Inside were several items.
A stack of printed documents.
A small hard drive.
Multiple folders.
The investigator began reviewing them.
Then his expression changed.
“Officer.”
“What?”
He looked at the papers.
“These are copies of personal information.”
Officer Miller stepped closer.
“What kind of information?”
The investigator looked uncomfortable.
“Private medical records.”
My stomach turned.
Ryan looked nervous.
“I can explain.”
Nobody listened.
The investigator continued.
“There are also personal files on multiple individuals.”
Sarah stood up immediately.
“Multiple?”
The investigator nodded.
“Yes.”
He opened another folder.
Names.
Dates.
Notes.
My blood ran cold.
Because these weren’t random documents.
They were profiles.
People.
Their fears.
Their weaknesses.
Their private lives.
Ryan had created a collection.
A database of people he could manipulate.
My father stared at the papers.
“You kept files on people?”
Ryan finally exploded.
“Everyone does it!”
The room froze.
Everyone does it.
Those words revealed more than he intended.
Officer Miller looked at him.
“No.”
Her voice was cold.
“Not everyone collects personal information to control people.”
Ryan breathed heavily.
“You don’t understand.”
My father looked at him.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“We understand perfectly.”
The investigator continued searching.
Then he found another folder.
This one was different.
He looked at Ryan.
“Who is Emily Bennett?”
I froze.
My own name.
Ryan’s face turned pale.
My father immediately stepped closer.
“What is in that folder?”
The investigator opened it.
And the first page made everyone silent.
Because it wasn’t just information about me.
It was a detailed plan.
A plan written months before my pregnancy.
A plan that explained exactly how Ryan intended to control my life.
And at the bottom of the page...

There was one sentence that made my father’s expression change forever.
“Goal: Make Emily completely dependent before the baby arrives.”
