Chapter 12: The Voice Behind the Lies

Chapter 12: The Voice Behind the Lies

Sarah placed the small recording device on the table.

Nobody moved.

The entire apartment felt like it was waiting for something terrible to be revealed.

Ryan stared at it.

And for the first time, he looked powerless.

“What is that?” he asked.

Sarah looked at him.

“You know exactly what it is.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

“You’re trying to ruin my life.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No, Ryan.”

Her voice was calm.

“I’m trying to stop you from ruining someone else’s.”

Officer Miller picked up the device carefully.

“Where did you get this recording?”

Sarah took a deep breath.

“I recorded it five years ago.”

“Why?”

Sarah looked at Ryan.

“Because I realized nobody believed women who spoke against him.”

The words hit me.

Because that was exactly what Ryan had tried to do to me.

Make me feel invisible.

Make me feel crazy.

Make me feel like nobody would believe me.

Sarah continued.

“After the first woman reported him, Ryan started protecting himself.”

“How?”

“He would have private conversations with people. He would explain how he could make someone look unreliable.”

My father’s face became colder.

“He studied people.”

Sarah nodded.

“He studied weaknesses.”

She looked at me.

“Just like he did with you.”

I lowered my eyes.

Because hearing someone else say it made the pain feel real.

Officer Miller turned on the device.

A few seconds of static filled the room.

Then Ryan’s voice came through.

My entire body froze.

It was him.

Younger.

But the same voice.

The same confidence.

The same coldness.

The recording began.

A man’s voice asked:

“What if she tells someone?”

Ryan answered.

“She won’t.”

“Why?”

“Because people like her always doubt themselves.”

The room went silent.

My father’s hand tightened into a fist.

The recording continued.

“She thinks nobody will believe her.”

A pause.

“She’ll blame herself before she blames me.”

I felt sick.

Because those words were exactly what I had lived through.

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Ryan immediately stepped forward.

“This proves nothing.”

Officer Miller looked at him.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

He pointed toward Sarah.

“She recorded a private conversation years ago.”

Sarah looked at him.

“A conversation where you admitted how you control people.”

Ryan laughed.

“You’re twisting my words.”

My father looked at him.

“Are you?”

Ryan looked away.

And that was the answer.

Officer Miller continued playing the recording.

Another voice appeared.

This time, it was Ryan speaking to someone else.

A woman.

“She’s emotional right now,” Ryan said.

“She’ll calm down eventually.”

The woman asked:

“What if she leaves?”

Ryan responded.

“She won’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I know exactly what scares her.”

My heart stopped.

The room became painfully quiet.

My father looked at me.

I couldn’t look back.

Because those words explained everything.

Every time I tried to leave.

Every time I wanted to call someone.

Every time I thought about telling the truth.

Ryan knew how to pull me back.

He knew my fears.

He knew my guilt.

He knew the wounds I had never healed.

The recording ended.

Sarah looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I wiped my tears.

“For what?”

“For not warning you.”

I shook my head.

“You didn’t know me.”

“But I knew him.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because Sarah had spent years carrying the same fear.

The same silence.

The same feeling of being trapped.

Officer Miller looked at Ryan.

“Mr. Carter, you need to understand something.”

Ryan stared at her.

“This evidence changes the situation.”

Ryan smiled slightly.

“Does it?”

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped back.

“You think these recordings prove I’m guilty?”

He shook his head.

“They prove I know how people think.”

My father stared at him.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“They prove you know how to hurt people.”

Ryan looked at me.

And then he said something I would never forget.

“You want the truth, Emily?”

My heart tightened.

“Fine.”

He smiled.

“I didn’t choose you because you were weak.”

Everyone froze.

“I chose you because you were strong.”

I felt confused.

Ryan continued.

“Strong people are the most satisfying to break.”

The room went completely silent.

Even Linda looked horrified.

Because those words revealed what Ryan had always been hiding.

Not love.

Not anger.

Not mistakes.

A desire for control.

Officer Miller immediately turned toward Ryan.

“Mr. Carter, you need to step away.”

But before anyone could move...

Ryan’s phone suddenly rang again.

He looked at the screen.

And this time...

His face didn’t show fear.

It showed shock.

May you like

Because the caller was someone whose name none of us expected.

My father’s commanding officer.
