Chapter 10: The Evidence Hidden in Plain Sight

Chapter 10: The Evidence Hidden in Plain Sight

Ryan’s face changed the moment Officer Miller mentioned the financial records.

For the first time, he didn’t look angry.

He didn’t look confident.

He looked caught.

“What payments?” Ryan asked.

His voice was too quick.

Too defensive.

Officer Miller noticed immediately.

“You tell me.”

Ryan looked around the room.

At Linda.

At me.

At my father.

Then back at the officer.

“There has to be some mistake.”

My father crossed his arms.

“Funny.”

Ryan looked at him.

“You’ve said that every time the truth gets closer.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“No,” my father replied.

“But the evidence does.”

Officer Miller checked her notes.

“We found multiple payments over the last six months to an individual named Daniel Foster.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But Ryan reacted instantly.

A small reaction.

Almost invisible.

Except everyone saw it.

My father stepped closer.

“Who is Daniel Foster?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I don’t know anyone by that name.”

Officer Miller looked at him.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

She glanced at her notes.

“Because the payments came from your personal account.”

Silence.

Ryan looked away.

That was the first crack.

The first moment his carefully built story began falling apart.

I looked at him.

“Who is he?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

“Ryan.”

My voice was quiet.

But I needed to know.

“Who helped you?”

He finally looked at me.

And for a brief second, I saw something different.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Guilt.

Then it disappeared.

“He was just someone I knew.”

Officer Miller continued.

“What did you hire him for?”

Ryan stayed silent.

My father’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to hide behind silence anymore.”

Ryan laughed softly.

“You think you’ve won?”

Nobody responded.

Because we all knew that wasn’t an answer.

Officer Miller continued.

“Daniel Foster has a history of altering records.”

My stomach dropped.

“What kind of records?”

She looked at me.

“Medical records.”

The room went quiet.

I felt my hands go cold.

Because suddenly, everything connected.

The strange comments from my doctor.

The way Ryan always knew what the doctor would say.

The way everyone repeated the same explanation.

Pregnancy symptoms.

Hormones.

Emotional stress.

It wasn’t random.

It was planned.

My father looked at Ryan.

“You manipulated medical reports.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

But his voice lacked confidence.

Officer Miller continued.

“Mr. Carter, we also found messages between you and Daniel Foster.”

Ryan’s eyes widened.

“What messages?”

She looked at him.

“Messages discussing how to make Emily appear unstable.”

My heart stopped.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Because hearing it said out loud made it real.

They weren’t just hiding what happened.

They were building a story against me.

A story where I was the problem.

Where nobody would believe me.

My father reached for my hand.

I held onto him.

Officer Miller continued.

“One message from you said, and I quote, ‘If she leaves, everyone will think she’s mentally unstable because of the pregnancy.’”

Ryan became silent.

I closed my eyes.

Those words hurt.

Not because they were surprising.

Because they confirmed what I had feared.

He didn’t just hurt me physically.

He tried to destroy my reputation.

My relationships.

My ability to ask for help.

My father looked at Ryan with disbelief.

“You planned this.”

Ryan finally exploded.

“You don’t understand!”

Everyone froze.

His calm mask disappeared.

“I was trying to keep my family together!”

My father stared at him.

“By hurting my daughter?”

Ryan pointed toward me.

“She was changing!”

My heart tightened.

“She wasn’t the same person anymore.”

Officer Miller stepped forward.

“Be careful with your words.”

But Ryan continued.

“She was emotional. Difficult. Unstable.”

I looked at him.

And something inside me finally broke.

Not from pain.

From clarity.

“You never loved me.”

The room became silent.

Ryan stopped.

I continued.

“You loved having someone you could control.”

His face changed.

Because he knew.

Deep down, he knew I was right.

My father looked at me.

And I saw pride in his eyes.

Not because I was fighting Ryan.

Because I was finally fighting for myself.

Then Officer Miller’s phone rang again.

She answered.

A few seconds later, her expression changed.

She looked at Ryan.

“Mr. Carter.”

Ryan stared at her.

“What now?”

She took a breath.

“We just received another report.”

My father looked confused.

“Another report?”

Officer Miller nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“From someone who worked with Ryan before.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

She looked back at Ryan.

“A former employee.”

Ryan’s face turned pale.

Because whoever this person was...

They knew something about him that even I didn’t know.

Officer Miller continued.

“They claim Ryan has done this before.”

The apartment went silent.

My father slowly looked at Ryan.

“Before?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

And that silence told us everything.

Because this was no longer just about my marriage.

It was about a pattern.

A pattern that had started long before I ever met him.

And now...

Someone from Ryan’s past was ready to expose it all.
